Scant few show up for Tan Nguyen at Balboa Bay Club event
A GOP insider called me last night to report that former Democrat and current GOP candidate for the 47th Congressional District Tan Nguyen (of the “Think Tan” signs) held a fundraiser last night at the Balboa Bay Club. It was hosted by former OC GOP Chair Tom Fuentes, and attended by perhapd thirty of Tom’s buddies, including Scott Carlson, Jeff “MoHarkey” Corless, and Buck Johns.
The Nguyen campaign is tough for me to understand. The guy has no name I.D., he was a Democrat a year ago, and suddenly Fuentes and his machine amigos think he is a better GOP candidate than longtime GOP stalwart Rosie Avila? This does not compute…
Art,
Actually it does. I believe you are letting your principles dictate your prospective of the races. Although in your eyes, Rosie is the best Republican of the two, she is not electable. We are living in times, where Republicans have to demonstrate they are moderately conservative, while democrats must show they are moderately liberal, putting them both with very similar views.
I believe Tom Fuentes and co. are looking for the candidate which has a higher likleyhood of winning, not necessarily who is the better candidate. Although I do have to admit, I too would choose Tan, over Rosie, even if I was a Republican. She is different.
You can’t always judge a campaign event by the on site attendance. Many givers of big checks have no desire to partake of the rubber chicken. I’ve also been to well attended fundraisers where lots of people are comped and and the others give $25 per. Rosie has had lots of those type over the years. Coffee klotch’s with church people from Calvery Chapel who eat lots of free chips and punch but don’t give real $$$.
Luis,
I know you dislike Rosie – but take the blinders off for a minute. She has been elected by huge margins for many years to a school district in the 47th Congressional District. She has a Hispanic surname in an ostensibly Latino-leaning district.
Nguyen, on the other hand, was a Democrat candidate for the Congress a year or so ago. He has NO name ID and he has already burned through his money. The guy is simply not a legitimate GOP candidate.
What this boils down to, in my opinion, is the New Majority not wanting Rosie to advance. They don’t want anyone to detract from their favorite candidate, Lynn Daucher. Fuentes, for whatever reason, is doing their bidding…
Latino residents and Latino VOTERS are two different things. Whats the number of high propensity Spanish surname reg. voters WHO VOTE in the district vs Vietnamise high prop. reg. voters who vote?? Don’t discount the Vietnamise voters and thier desire to support Vietnamise candidates. Art, will you work hard for Nguyen if he wins the primary??
9:27,
There is no way that Nguyen will win, so I don’t have to worry about supporting him…
“Nguyen, on the other hand, was a Democrat candidate for the Congress a year or so ago. He has NO name ID “
Say what? Try looking up the name Nguyen in the phone book….even if the only people who vote for him are people actually NAMED Nguyen …I think he takes it! Come on Art, he’s a conservative…can’t you at least say, yes, if he “nguyens” the primary I’ll support him but I don’t think he’ll win? Can’t you do that?
Bottom line is Tan has no name ID or focus. His only goal is to be a member of Congress. Not to assist the constituents of the 47 District. And Rosie is just mortifying to watch. Others have tried and failed to take on the Sanchez machine. These two will be no exception.
Tan’s problem:
1. No campaign consultant
2. Campaign signs don’t display
his name.
3. His mail doesn’t have a message. In fact, one piece has a pic. of Fuentes and the back of Tan’s head.
4. He is already mailing to Dems.
They can’t vote for him yet.
5. Lastly, the “Vote for Pedro” campaign had more focus.
Many years ago they said some of the same things about a young woman who got 8th place in her only previous run for office, Anaheim City Council. She too was mocked. She won. Her name is Lorretta.
Do you believe in magic? Tan does.
If Tan believes in magic perhaps he ought to get a job at Disneland.
Let me start by saying I’ve always been a fan of Rosie. She does well in pushing an agenda that in the long term best interests of the people of Santa Ana. I’m on her side as she sits on the Santa Ana board.
Similarly, I
Art,
Wake up & smell the coffee. Have you ever looked out the demographics of the 47th district? Maybe you should. The numbers don

Be prepared to eat those words..Art
JM,
I believe you are correct.
The Vietnamese community and the Latino community are the voting bloc most should go after. Latinos tend to me liberal in nature, especially now with immigration, but vietnamese tend to be Republican due to Vietnamese Communism, but that is also changing. Tan has the best shot at getting the vietnamese vote. Loretta has the Latino vote locked.
So whats Rosie base? Right Wing Christians and the minutemen?
It is plain as daylight.
Art- There are no blinders, it is just the facts. You have to look at it from a logical point of view not with your heart.
