Rosie Avila woos contributors at the Paradise Pier Hotel
I don’t normally like to attend political fundraising dinners, but I had the opportunity to sit in on Rosie Avila’s event tonight, at the Disney Paradise Pier Hotel, in Anaheim. There were well over 100 well-heeled Avila fans in attendance, including numerous elected officials and candidates. Orange County Supervisors Chris Norby, Jim Silva and Bill Campbell were in attendance, as well as Claude Parrish from the Board of Equalization, and Nancy Padberg, a candidate for the Orange County Superior Court. I found out that Parrish is also running for California State Treasurer.
Other Republican activists in attendance included YAF’er turned political consultant Brian Park; Reva Renee Renz, the always charming former gubernatorial candidate who is now running for the OC GOP Central Committee in the 69th Assembly District; Ryan Gene Williams, the GOP candidate for the 69th Assembly District; Steven Sarkis, a CRA member who is unbelievably backing RINO Lynn Daucher (?!?) for the 34th State Senate District; influential Vietnamese Republican Assembly leader Cuong Sing Cao; and the very hard-working GOP campaign volunteer Jon Aiken. Kay Weymouth, the executive director of the OC GOP, was also there, along with several of her staffers. Tim Whitacre, the longtime GOP activist and Central Committee member, served as the MC for the evening, in his capacity as Chair of the Avila campaign.
Avila was dressed in a red outfit that imparted a glamorous look – ironic since her eventual Democrat opponent, Loretta Sanchez, is known for wearing red dresses. Avila had a big smile on her face throughout the evening, as she was surrounded by well-wishers, including a retired U.S. Army Brigadier General. The contributors paid $250 per seat, and many gave much more before leaving.
The strangest part of the evening was the fact that former OC GOP Chairman Tom Fuentes was not there. This was exactly the kind of function that he loved to MC in years past. However, he is now on the payroll of Tan Nguyen, the former Democrat who is opposing Avila for the GOP nomination in the 47th Congressional District. Too bad. Fuentes missed out on a fun evening – and Avila looks like she is ready to take on Loretta…
Spend that money Rosie….you’ll be Loretta’s next road kill and those are dollars NOT going to Daucher—the only race truly competitive.
What amkes people think that Daucher has a legit shot at winning the 34th.
Keep in mind, the heart of the 34th is Santa Ana. I’d pay big bucks to see Daucher try and court voters in Downtown Santa Ana.
Perhaps, that’s the GOP way of saying… you’re our candidate!
brock –
peddle Moreno on a thread that pertains to her not for ready prime time election. this one is about Rosie.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Art’s fashion reporting on Rosie’s attire for the evening. Hmmm,it appears Prada Girl is having an impact on his fashion sensibilities. Next thing we’ll read is Art and Prada Girl were spotted shopping in trendy Newport Coast.
Rosie is another individual who is not capable of holding any elected office.
Her endorsement of Santa Ana’s Chamber of Commerce proposed Valley HS Technology Magnet School is yet another example of her being oblivious to what’s going on. Why is she prepared to turn over the governance of one of our high schools?
Did Rosie broker a deal with the Chamber? Will the Chamber endorse Rosie for the 69th?
Roise has a way of always looking out for Rosie and not her SAUSD constituents.
Santa Ana – just say NO to Avila
and Moreno.
For the record:
According to No Child Left Behind, when a school enters Year 4 of Program Improvement, the school and district are charged to prepare a plan for alternate governance which must be implemented day one of year 5.
The district and school MUST select ONE of the following options:
** Reopen as a charter
** Replace all or most staff including principal
** Contract with outside entity to manage school
** State takeover
** Any other major restructuring.
Valley High School is currently in Year 5 and it appears the course of action the district is taking is:
“Contract with outside entity to manage school”
It was only a first read at last SAUSD School board meeting with the final version not set in stone as yet.
Implementing NCLB is new and almost unchartered waters. The best example of implementing NCLB is in San Diego City Unified School District.
Miu Miu,
Remember that Rosie backed the onerous One Broadway Project, which means that the developer, Mike Harrah, is now in her debt. He is very influential at the Santa Ana Chamber – so draw your own conclusion from that.
Despite the fact that a partisan Dem (Metzler) runs the Chamber, it is apparent that they are lining up behind Rosie. That only serves to make her a tougher contender against Loretta Sanchez.
Remember too that Rosie at least has raised a large brood – Loretta never had any children and unless she intends to go the Angelina Jolie route and adopt children, I suspect she never will realize the joys of motherhood. So in my opinion, Avila will always have an edge on Sanchez in the realm of education and family issues in general. I suspect many voters will feel the same way.
I will grant that Sanchez has an edge on Rosie with regard to cats, given the prominence of the Sanchez kitty “Gretzky,” who appears annually on her holiday cards. However, cats can’t vote – advantage Rosie.
Personally, I am no fan of Harrah or the Chamber, and as such I would be inclined to deeply scrutinize the magnet school concept. I don’t trust them…
Santa Ana Chamber will NEVER endorse Lupe (or Rosie for that matter). The S.A. Chamber’s board is run by Super Dem Mike Metzler who is a failed candidate for Democrat nomination for Assembly. Most of the board are Dem.’s or anti-Rosie. (Recent past member was pseudo-judge liberal Glen Mondo) Chamber will NEVER, EVER, Support Lupe/Rosie and that’s a good thing because Rosie is pretty kooky and Lupe is too controversial. In thier struggle to find Latinos to run the Rep’s keep going to the crazy farm to recruit. (I’m a Rep by the way and agree with Rosie on lots if not most issues but think she’s strange)
oh how nice it is to have female candidates rated on the color and cut of their attire and how many children they have born – or not – Can we have a rundown please on what the fellas wear too -and how many babies call them “papa” – and then please can we link this status to their ability to represent and lead? Pretty please?
Tom Fuentes was too busy trying to pull the plug on the American Library Association:
http://dissenttheblog.blogspot.com/
Tim Whitacre was wearing a navy blue suit, with a sheen, deep blue shirt. His necktie was a deep red with a complimenting pattern. He sported his trademark American Flag/Marine Corps emblem lapel pin, over his left lapel. His head and face were freshly shaved and his facial hair, neatly trimed.
He smelled nice. The women appeared to nod in approval.
yes, yes, that is all fine and good but how many children has Whiteacre sired? I don’t know if he is worthy of public service if he hasn’t shown himself virile enough to breed a brood.
If you knew the real reason why Tom Fuentes didn’t go…then you guys would be eating all your words.
Art-
I really do think that you’re trying, but you must realize that when you describe female candidates and elected officials in terms of what they are wearing you are being insulting.
Just try to treat them as equal to men, please. I know it’s hard for you.
Next time you’re writing this type of event run-down, think to yourself – if this was a Norby fundraiser would you write about the color of his suit and tie? Probably not!
So don’t do it with a candidate who happens to be a woman, please.

Ahem. Art! You forgot to mention that Avila wore last year’s slingback Pradas which allowed her newly varnished toenails to wink at that beaming Brigadier General. You’re slacking off on your coverage! Take better notes! I do!
Retired, my foot! he looked ready for action that night!
Maybe Tom Fuentes doesn’t like red dresses?
If we are calling Rosie Congresswoman after November, I’ll buy everyone on this list the adult beverage of their choice. Salud!
Better to call Rosie congresswoman and have her eaten alive in Congress.
At least it gets her out of Santa Ana.
Since Art is comfortable displaying his fashionista sensibilities and bragging about his culinary talents, I’d like to know — is he the constant gardner?
I’m waiting for Art to start sharing his favorite recipes and dispensing fashion hints. Accents by Art.
I’m all a quiver.
BTW … how many children has Tim sired within the sanctity of marriage?
Come now.
Art was just celebrating the arrival of female bloggers by trying to imitate what he imagines the female sensibility is through his writing.
For all of you who have commented about Rosie’s outfit – the only reason I mentioned it is because I think she wore red on purpose. Everyone knows that Loretta likes to wear red dresses and while it might be naught but conjecture, I think Rosie was sending a subtle message to Loretta. Red is considered a “power” color. I think Rosie was showing Loretta that she considers herself to be her equal as a candidate.
Or maybe she just likes red outfits…
By the way, you guys seem to feel that I talk down to women, or consider them to be somehow inferior to men. Not quite. I think women today are quite capable of holding their own in the workforce and in politics. But I do think I am a better cook them most women…
Is that like what happens when people start speaking with an British accent when faced with British people?
lavender asked:
“BTW … how many children has Tim sired within the sanctity of marriage?
answer:
Three less than Antonio Villaragos-Alcalde L.A.
and I think Antonio’s were with 3 different ladies…but let’s get back on topic
Okay – what are YOU wearing when you type your blog entries Art?
Okay – so red is a power color and is favored by sanchez – (yikes!)and Art likes to cook and respects women to boot – but waht about this one Art: “Remember too that Rosie at least has raised a large brood – Loretta never had any children and unless she intends to go the Angelina Jolie route and adopt children, I suspect she never will realize the joys of motherhood. So in my opinion, Avila will always have an edge on Sanchez in the realm of education and family issues in general.”
A bit of biology is destiny, no? Or do you ever comment on a male candidate’s family and how it affect his ability to lead?
Can’t you see the problem here?
It’s Padberg, bot Padburg.
9:24,
The point I am making is that Sanchez always sells herself as a politician with an interest in education – but she is not a teacher, she has no children, etc. So the obvious question is “what makes her such an expert on education?”
Say what you will about Rosie – but she has served on two school boards and she has raised several children. Therefore she knows more about Loretta about education and family issues in general.
I would apply the same yardstick to a male candidate who was portending to be an expert on education.
Fine – but you didn’t include that in your original assessment of her – you simply stated what the other person quoted above – the implication being that one female candidate had had children – and a number of them – and that that gave her an “edge” over the childless female candidate.
Surely you see the absurdity of that? The simple act of procreation does not an exerpt on family or education make. There are plenty of irresponsible, ignorant parents out there. and there are plenty of people who are not parents who have the education and background to lead of issues regarding education and family matters. Everyone comes from a faamily after all – and yes, single people or married people without children have families too.
And I simply haven’t ever seen you guys talk about how fatherhood gives male candidates an “edge” – I may be wrong there. Please correct me if I am. I am sure you will.
You do use different yardsticks for the guys and you measure different things.
The gals? Red dresses, smiling faces and babies.
9:52,
I never said fatherhood gives men an “edge.” Heck, even Umberg is a father.
You make a good point that having children does not automatically mean you are a worthwhile person. However, if a candidate is going to prattle on about education, and that person is not a teacher, and he or she has no children, then I think it is fair to ask what makes that person such an expert on education.
As for how I measure male candidates versus female candidates, the fact is I look at what they stand for. I oppose Daucher, for example, because she has a record of voting against tax decreases; voting poorly on issues pertaining to immigration; being pro-abortion; and being pro-eminent domain abuse. I support Lupe Moreno, on the other hand, because she is very solidly conservative on all those issues. What they wear has nothing to do with my analysis of them.
art- “The point I am making is that Sanchez always sells herself as a politician with an interest in education – but she is not a teacher, she has no children, etc. So the obvious question is “what makes her such an expert on education?”
—–
her mother is a teacher if that counts for anything? and 10 years experience representing santa ana might come in handy.
what has rosie done while she on the school board? write that fabulous editorial?
A third choice?

1:47,
Is there some kind of “teacher gene” that was passed down from Loretta’s mother to her? I did not know that was possible. Then again George H.W. Bush seems to have passed the “president gene” down to George W. Bush…
I suppose Loretta might have learned a thing or two from her mother, but that seems to be a bit of a stretch…
Has Pham declared for the 47th? Very interesting…That should finish off “Think Tan” Nguyen.
10:18,
As far as I know Tom was not there because he is working for “Think Tan” Nguyen.
Art,
I know you never said that fatherhood gave men an edge – that was my point.
You said it about women though.
Can’t you see your sexit double standard here?
Sheesh.
You mean sexist double standard, right, anon?
Right.
Passion always weakens my typing skills.
Can someone help Art to understand what I mean?
(For the record, if anyone is keeping track of such things – and if it matters– I ain’t voting for either gal. It’s just the principle of the matter.)
First off, I haven’t seen/read/heard anywhere that Loretta considers herself “an expert” on education. It’s an issue that she cares passionately about.
As a person raised by an educator, I have no doubt that Loretta and her brothers and sisters were regaled with tales of the current state of education by their mother (now retired) at every family dinner.
Let’s not forget her own education, at Katella HS, Chapman College, and earning an MBA at American.
Do you really think that Mike Harrah and the SA Chamber would support Rosie over a longtime, strongly-favored incumbent, or is that just wishful thinking?
FYI – Loretta wears “jewel tones” in many colors, not just red. They “pop” in crowds and on camera.
art… no one said there is a education gene. but you are the one that is attacking loretta on education with little to no substance. your simply trying to peddle your wacky candidate and her credentials on us. pointing out that her mother is a teacher, and her sister is a big advocate for education, are simply facts. im not trying to sell her on education, there is no need to because apparantly the voters have agreed with her…FIVE TIMES.
what are rosie credentials on federal issues anyways? so sitting on a school board makes you an expert on national issues? your making a very weak argument.
iraq? the deficit? tell us about those topics, and not what power colors she was wearing.
republians cannot win on national issues. they lose in all of the departments, and you know it. the right has succesfully made immigration the new gay marriage, and thats all you guys will touch on.
and about pham.. can he run even though he didnt file? or can independents just run when they feel like it? i havent seen him file with the f.e.c. either
if anything he would would just take votes off from whoever the republican candidate is
seems like a guy just trying to sell some books.
Yeah, Art does use a different yardstick for men and women. He also stakes claim on the “Real Republican.”
Rosie may have imparted a glamourous look decked out in her red outfit, but the moment she opens her mouth you are sorely disappointed. The lights are on, but no one is home.
Rumor has it that once Rosie Avila gets elected to Congress, she’ll introduce legislation banning black helicopters from flying around her house.
“prattle on”?
Hmmm.
cluck-cluck – back to my brood.
Watch out ladies.
Soon Art is going to accuse you of being too sensitive (we know what that means) and suggest that if you can’t stand the heat, you stay out of the kitchen.
Maybe Art stepped out of the kitchen….
[and about pham.. can he run even though he didnt file? or can independents just run when they feel like it? i havent seen him file with the f.e.c. either–if anything he would would just take votes off from whoever the republican candidate is

Primary: June 6, 2006 (for Democrat, Republican and third party candidates) to determine who will be on the general election ballot against the incumbent. There is no primary for independent candidates.
Filing deadline for independent candidates: August 11, 2006. Between June 12 and August 11, obtain, circulate and deliver nominating documents to county election officials to include 5,636 voter signatures (3% of the 47th CD’s 2004 registered voters).
General Election: November 7, 2006
Re: FEC
An individual who merely tests the waters (but does not campaign for office) does not have to register or report as a candidate even if the individual raises or spends more than $5,000
thanks for info on the indp. candidate stuff. i had a feeling it wasn’t necessary to go along with the two parties. getting that many legitamate signature will be tuff though.
(“A Sense of Duty” was published on April 12, 2005 and not during this election year.)
sure it was but, by the looks of it, according the book tour schedual, seems like it is still being pushed.
and you didn’t address the final point, of how if anything pham will only take votes away from whoever the republican candidate is, especially if it is tan
can someone point out where rosie campaign is. the only person campaigning in this election so far been tan. the only one with a website, mailers, fundraisers, a yard signs. however bad they are, i dont see anything from rosie
Well, Art, Rosie may “look like she is ready to take on Loretta” but I think deep inside we can all see that she’s not .
