Update on Lupe Moreno’s State Senate Campaign
Lupe Moreno’s campaign for the 34th State Senate campaign is on – she has collected and turned in her signatures and will be launching her website soon. I had an opportunity to interview her tonight, and she had a lot to say about her campaign and the California Republican Party Convention that just drew to a close up in San Jose.
The highlight of the weekend for Moreno was a conversation with State Senator Tom McClintock. She went to see him so that he could sign a commemorative t-shirt, and when he asked her what she has been up to she told him about her campaign. Apparently he winced and turned red and apologized to her because he had just endorsed Van Tran. “Lupe,” he said, “had I know I would have endorsed you.” He then promised to help her in whatever way he could. Moreno told me that she has known Tom for years, and has testified in Sacramento at hearings he was involved in, regarding illegal immigration.
On that note, Moreno was amazed at how prevalent the illegal immigration issue was at the convention. It seems that virtually every GOP candidate is now talking about illegals. She laughed about that and credited Jim Gilchrist with this sea change in the California Republican Party.
Moreno also said that she and many of Gilchrist’s followers will be travelling to President Bush’s ranch in Crawford, Texas, on March 6, to protest his immigration policies. That just might get her on the air, particularly at KFI-AM 640. There is a website with details about the protest, at www.areckoning.com.
Moreno also mentioned that Orange County Republican Party Chairman Scott Baugh called her last week. He asked her about her positions on taxe, abortion and the environment. Afterwards he commented that she is “very conservative.” He also told her that if she wins the primary, he will see to it that she gets help in the general.
Moreno has been advised by a popular GOP women’s group, and an O.C. GOP consultant to abandon her current campaign and run isntead for the 47th Congressional District. However, Moreno has been friends with Rosie Avila, who is already running for the 47th, for years, and she won’t run against her.
Finally, Moreno advised that those who want to know more about her can go to http://www.latinoamericans.org/. Her campaign site will be up soon, with more specific information about her and her stand on the issues.
LIAR is an appropriate name for Moreno’s website of two.
WOW! Does Lupe also believe the word gillible is not found in the dictionary. Hate to break it to the lady, but she was being BS’d by Tom McClintock. Everyone already knew of her intentions. It is just funny that she actually falls for this kind of BS. It goes to show why she is not a viable candidate.
Van Tran is the one viable candidate we have to win the 34th back. People like Moreno and the Minutemen are only going to screw it all up. Do us a favor Moreno, get out now.
GOP Insider,
Yes, you are right. “Gillible” is not a word.
Moreno does throw a monkey wrench into this election, but that is her right.
I still think there is time for Van Tran to call her and work something out. So far he has not done so. That I don’t understand…
Whoops, I meant gullible.
My impression with Van Tran is that he underestimates Lupe Moreno. My concern is people who want a secure border will be split by someone who wears the mantra on her sleeve and someone who doesn’t but will have a good record in the Legislature. Maybe we should advise that Tran do a sit down with her. Ignoring the problem will not help it go away.
GOP Insider,
I have made arrangements today for Tran’s people to contact Moreno. Let’s hope he picks up the phone…this is a call that needs to be made ASAP.
gop insider–
We’ll see how much integrity Van tran has after the dust from Lyn’s hit pieces settles. Not to mention what Umberg or Correa might unveil.
Love the name calling..you were probably out with the YAF’ers in the San Jose hallways this weekend.
GOP Insider –
Fair question.
You disagree with TW’s in your face tactics and I abhor his attempt to censure anyone’s right to express an opinion on the OJ blog becasue he believes Tin Star bloggers have infiltrated OJ. Furthermore, resorting to name calling certain OJ bloggers as Carona whores is reprehensible. He goes so far as to ask how much is Carona’s cut for his stable of whores.
He’s a poor ambassador for the GOP.
TW’s big on restoring intergrity to the Sheriff’s office, but low on the I-factor himself.
No decent Republican favors censorship of free speech.
Steven Greenhut has just posted on Orange Punch that Van is standing down.
Gillible? Oh, you mean Gillaird, the slimey consultant that has OC Blogger Jubal, Matt Cunningham and Jon Flieschman on his payroll. Their job is to smear good conservatives. Jim Silva, a conservative. Let’s all barf together.
Anonymous,
Your theory makes sense. Why else would Jubal be such a pimp for Silva? It is odious. Talk about getting your 30 pieces of silver…
cheap shot at Jubal Art…weren’t you on the payroll of an anti-union contractors group? Could we say that is why you oppose any Republican who not only voted for a PLA but who does anything that you might construe as being pro-union?
Logan,
You don’t know me all that well Logan. It is presumptious of you to try to ascertain why it is that I so strongly believe in the right to work – which means the right to decide for yourself if you want to work for a union.
I have taught for a non-union apprenticeship program at Cerritos College for three years. My students are barred from working on jobs that involve PLAs.
I work for a non-union contractor and have worked for non-union contractors for the last six years or so.
Yes, I did some part-time work for an association that fights PLAs – but when I opposed the OC PLA I did so on my own, as a GOP activist. When I helped Norby defeat pro-PLA Cynthia Coad, I again acted on my own.
Oh, and I do belong to a teacher’s union. And my wife belongs to the service employees union. How do you like that? I have no problem with unions – I just don’t like it when union bosses try to shut non-union contractors out of bidding on public projects. That is not fair…
Art, You know that PLA’s don’t prevent non-union contractors from bidding on projects..in fact many non-union contractors sucessfully bid on projects with PLA’s. You know that so why would you misrepresent this?
Just curious, do you have a problem with teacher union bosses?
Actually, I have a good deal of respect for you from afar. You truly believe what you say and while you are pretty conservative you have a basic sense of fairness that comes out in some of your posts.
I really don’t mean to get personal, you don’t really need to justify your opinions, but I just didn’t like your taking off on Jubal that way.
Logan,
You probably don’t want to debate PLAs with me – I have been studying them for years and have debated their merits at city council meetings, on TV and on radio.
Yes, a non-union contractor can bid on a PLA, but understand that if he wins the bid he has to use workers from the union hall, or send his workers to the hall. That is the point of contention. Workers have the right to decide if they want to work for a union. PLAs undermine that right.
With regard to teacher union bosses, as you put it, I have a problem when they consistently spend dues on supporting far-left candidates, despite the fact that at least 40% of their members are generally Repbulicans and many of them are conservatives.
There have been some nasty comments pointed at Jubal on this blog, but I did not write them. I don’t moderate the comments on this blog anymore, due to time constraints. This is a free forum, and sometimes folks make bad decisions when others are not there to edit their comments.
I do think that there are many Republicans, and some Democrats, who are wondering why the O.C. GOP machine is so supportive of politicians who have either supported PLAs, or are given to doing so.
For me this is a basic issue – if a Republican backs a PLA he is telling his constituents that the right to work does not matter. 85% of the workers in this country are NON-UNION, so why would a Republican sell out to union bosses? You’ll have to ask Jim Silva about that…
