5/02/2008 10:30:00 AM|||Vern Nelson|||So, Orange County's anti-immigrant forces managed to get together a crowd of twenty true believers for their May Day protest in front of the Mexican Consulate this morning, and ten percent of them were famous - Barbara Coe and Lupe Moreno! The protesters were nearly outnumbered by journalists and photographers - I've got to figure out who does their press releases, maybe I can get them to help us with our anti-war events.
Well, I like to talk to the regular folks, not the celebrities, and I was able to speak with a few of them before my co-blogger Claudio arrived and stirred up a ruckus. One white-haired gentleman (actually they all had white hair except for Lupe) has turned against the War on Iraq and agrees with me that our government lied to us about the real reasons for the invasion and occupation, that it's all about oil and imperialism, and that it's a senseless waste of military lives and treasure. But he had an interesting way of tying it into his pet peeve of illegal immigration: If we just deported the "30 Million" (their absurdly inflated figure just keeps inflating) "illegals" that are here, we would need a lot less oil here, and we could leave Iraq with honor. He was nonplussed by my observation that you don't see the immigrants driving SUV's and hummers so much as you see them walking, biking, and taking the bus.
He was proud that the movement he was part of had forced the issue of immigration into the political discourse and claimed that no politicians had been talking about it till the Minutemen came on the scene - I didn't bother telling him how Dana Rohrabacher and Tom Tancredo had been using immigration as a wedge issue to win elections for decades. He was of course very unexcited about John McCain and sour on the war, so I'm hoping that these folks include a lot of lapsed Republicans who will sit this Presidential Election out.
Then there was the Vegetable Lady, pictured here wrapped in flags. She asked me not to take her picture and

at first I agreed while she was being nice (even though I can't understand people, including some of our war protesters, who feel strongly enough about an issue to stand out on a busy street with a sign, but consider their privacy violated when someone takes their picture.) So anyway, when I first got there, I was arguing with some of them about whether or not Mexicans are taking away jobs that Americans want to do (of course they're not), and this lady started boasting to me of how she will never buy vegetables from Mexico or Honduras, and instead grows all her own vegetables in her yard, and has her freezer STUFFED with vegetables she grew herself! I was confused about why she refused to buy vegetables from other countries - I mean, maybe there's good health reasons, but if her biggest concern is not wanting to have immigrants come up here looking for work, shouldn't she be happy to help their economies down there? Once again I was able to make no headway with this person's logic.
Anyway she did eventually turn into a shrieking hag, accusing me of being a traitor to my nation and my race. Maybe she started to get a bad vibe from my guayavera shirt, or noticed that I was a friend of Claudio Gallegos, who is like an Antichrist to these folks. Or maybe she noticed that while her colleagues were trying to impede the entrance to the Mexican Consulate and insult and sneer at all the Mexicans who walked in and out, I was meanwhile holding the door open and saying "Pase, hermano!" So I reneged on my promise not to photograph her, and there's my picture of the Vegetable Lady! May she enter the Minutemen Hall of Fame with her full freezer of greens.
Then there was the guy who drove around in the amazing white pickup pictur

ed here - round and round the block he went, honking while his comrades cheered; you can see a picture of the driver in the crowd yelling at Claudio
here, he's the guy who looks like Lloyd Bridges in
Airplane saying "Guess I picked the wrong day to stop sniffing glue." I also saw the celebrated
Lupe Moreno, even
más fea in the flesh, hollering at Claudio about how Jesus had saved her from her immigrant-shtupping ways. But I was most eager to get a chance to speak to Minuteman leader and my fellow Huntington Beach resident Barbara Coe (pictured below between two real tough customers) - I wanted to know how the Minuteman community feels about my state senator Tom Harman.
You see, I've been writing a series for
The Orange Coast Voice entitled "The Descent of Tom Harman" on how he has suddenly changed, on moving from the assembly to the state senate, from a moderate Republican defender of the environment and the little guy, to a strident rightwing anti-environmental immigrant-basher. (The first segment, on his changing environmental record, should be hitting newsstands today.) I'd been wanting to know if these folks, to whom ending illegal immigration is the most important issue, feel they can trust someone who is such a sudden and recent convert to the cause.
Well, Mrs. Coe was effusive in her praise for Senator Harman, "He doesn't just say the right thing, he actually gets out there and does it!" When I countered, "Don't you see a little bit of political expediency there, his suddenly getting religion on this when he's being threatened with a primary from the right?" she responded proudly, "I really think it's due to a meeting we had with him, where we truly impressed upon him what a huge problem illegal immigration is." Ah, the naïveté of the true believer. (I wish we had had such luck with him when six of us tried to convince him to do something about our healthcare crisis ... but then we couldn't credibly threaten his political future.)
Well, I still suspect that behind these people's standard official concerns about "rule of law" and "stolen jobs" is really mos

tly a distaste (also known as "racism") for folks with darker skins and a different culture who speak a different language. And of course we've seen throughout history that the poor majority facing economic insecurity and social upheavals will often look for scapegoats of a different race. But at this point the powers-that-be are benefiting too much from the
status quo to want to change anything, and only isolated demagogues like Congressman Rohrabacher and Senator Harman are interested in taking advantage of the nativist obsession. Neither of the major parties has much to offer these Minutemen; I guess I'm saying we can afford to laugh at the poor schmucks.
Two other points: The Mexicans are not taking any jobs that grownup white Americans want to do. Areas that have really cracked down on employers for hiring the undocumented have discovered that they had to make do without waiters, dishwashers and gardeners. You know why? BECAUSE THIS IS WORK THAT TEENAGERS USED TO DO! And our lazy spoiled teenagers, if you noticed, are lying on the couch playing Grand Theft Auto rather than picking lettuce. There's one thing you nativists can do if you want to cleanse your streets of brown people: make your kids get minimum wage jobs!
It would also be neat if we would stop electing fascist leaders who systematically pursue policies that hurt the working classes of all countries. It's not reported at all in the US media, but there is practically a civil war going on in Mexico right now. It's not natural that a country with Mexico's resources should be so poor that their citizens would need to come up here for subminimum wage work. But our elites are constantly interfering in Mexico's political process. Most Mexicans consider their real President to be the populist Mexico City mayor López Obrador, whom the people elected to pursue policies to help the Mexican working classes; but the US company Choicepoint - same folks who helped Bush "win" in Florida in 2000 - managed to pull off just enough hanky-panky to install the US-corporate-friendly Felipe Calderón, who is trying to privatize Mexico's oil, making things even worse for his country. And as I write, the Mexican legislature has been shut down as part of a showdown between these two sides - it is amazing that we hear no news of these earthshaking events in our closest neighboring country. (Get more information here:
http://www.owcinfo.org/ ) In short, the Mexican people are trying to take their country back, our government interferes with them much more than most of you can imagine, and the rich are keeping the poor down here and there.
Don't let them trick us into fighting each other.Labels: barbara coe, Immigration, lupe moreno, mexico, Minutemen, tom harman

Our former blogger Claudio Gallegos and our current blogger Vern Nelson teamed up today at the May Day protests in Santa Ana. As you can see in the O.C. Register picture above, Claudio faced off with the Minutemen when one of them recognized him.
The Register reported that only 200 pro-immigration protesters showed up. And of course there were about two dozen Minutemen, including the infamous Lupe Moreno, who served for several years as Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido's Library Board commissioner. For some reason the Register included about four pictures of her in their slide show of the day's pictures.
Vern will be putting up a post about the demonstrations later today or tomorrow.

Apparently Nativo Lopez is leading some sort of march today in Downtown Santa Ana. You might want to stay out of that area today. Here is the official media plan from the Santa Ana Police Department (see last year's SAPD welcoming committee above, courtesy of Red County):
May 1, 2008 Media Plan
Public Information Office
Plaza of the Flags
Commencing at 1500 hours, Santa Ana Police Department PIO Corporal Gonzalez and assistant PIO Sergeant Carrillo (both Spanish speakers) will be assigned to cover the Immigrant Rights March/Rally, organized by Hermandad Mexicana and the Institute for Mexicans Abroad in Orange County. Participants, estimated by organizers to approach 6,000, will rally in the Plaza of the Flags where a pre-built stage will accommodate speakers. Street closures for this area are expected to commence at approximately 1000 hours.
Participants are expected to begin to assemble at approximately 1500 hours at the Plaza of the Flags, commence their march between 1500 and 1600 hours. The march will then continue along the designated route, (North on Ross Street, West on Civic Center, North on Flower, East on 17th, South on Broadway, West on Civic Center, and South on Ross into the Plaza of the Flags) which was agreed upon by the event organizers.
• The Media Viewing Area for the Immigrants Rights March is designated within the Plaza of the Flags. Sergeant Carrillo and Corporal Gonzalez will be on hand to facilitate media coverage and assist the on-scene Incident Commander.
• Parking for media vehicles during this event has been established in two separate locations. The first location is along the east side of Ross Street just north of Santa Ana Blvd. The media will be allowed to park in the metered stalls just south of the road closure on Ross Street. Those stalls will be posted with no parking signs to ensure members of the public do not park in the media’s area. The second media parking area has been established in the east lot adjacent to the Santa Ana Stadium, on the southwest corner of Flower and Civic Center. The gates to the east lot will be open so that media personnel can drive in to set up for their planned coverage. Both locations offer the media close access to the rally area and portions of the march route. Media that chooses not to utilize the designated media parking locations must obey all local parking ordinances in order to avoid parking citations and/or having their vehicle towed.
Once the participants begin their walk, Sergeant Carrillo and Corporal Gonzalez will facilitate ongoing media requests.
The groups are expected to begin their march at approximately 1600 hours and will conclude at the Plaza of the Flags at an unknown time.
No unusual occurrences are expected however, specific media safety zones have been established to enhance the media’s safety. Should it become necessary to activate these specific sites, the PIO's will coordinate with on-scene media.
In the event that the media safety zone is needed, the field PIO’s will be responsible for directing the media to these designated safety zones. Currently, the safety zone for the Plaza of the Flags area is directly northwest of the Plaza of the Flags near the southern entrance to the Orange County Court House.
In the event that the Incident Commander activates the mobile field force component, officers
along skirmish lines will be instructed to allow credentialed media personnel to cross the skirmish line to join up with the PIO’s, who will trail behind, to allow the media to safely cover the event.
The officers will instruct the media that they will not be allowed to cross back over the skirmish line until it is deemed safe by the Incident Commander. If media personnel choose not to join the PIO’s behind the officers, the media is then expected to obey the officer’s orders to disburse from the area along with the crowd.
Any members of the media with questions or concerns regarding the Santa Ana Police Department’s media plan should contact the PIO, Corporal Jose Gonzalez.Labels: Immigration, may day, santa ana, santa ana police department

Says:
I don't think there are really that many people who blame the economic downturn on Immigration nor Legal Immigrants. Quite frankly, Id like to know who Kennedy is referring to specifically since I cant name one person who has made any such claim. Seems to me like a straw man argument designed solely to get minorities and immigrants to jump on the Democrat bandwagon under the guise of "let us protect you from those nasty racists."
However, when it comes to the state of California you would have to be in a true state of denial to think that Illegal Immigrants aren't having an overall negative impact fiscally and socially. I also happen to know that while California and other border states bear a brunt of the burden that the same issues affecting border states have spread to almost every other state in the US.
Right Wing/Left Wing is a moot point. There are real bonafide problems here that neither party will touch with a ten foot pole.
I am not arguing that illegal immigration doesn't have an impact on the economy. What I'm suggesting is that the fiscal impact of illegal immigration is overstated, and the related anger is misplaced.
Doesn't anyone question their leaders as to how it got this bad in the first place? Where was this issue when we were worried about national security but retained a practically open border with Mexico? It wasn't on the radar because the Republicans already had their distraction in 'national security.'
And while I hate to rag on Bill Clinton, what about NAFTA? Also, as I've asked before, why don't we send Mexico more aid? And what's up with this oil they may have discovered there? Will we feel the same about illegal immigration and free trade when gas prices are $4.00/gallon and we want Mexico's oil for something less than $110 a barrel?
This is a much more complicated issue than people want to admit and it's not just an economic issue, it's a human rights issue - that's why people trespass into our country - survival, not greed.
You say neither party wants to deal with it, so in a way you're validating what I'm saying here. If they don't want to deal with it, why else would they be talking about it unless they were trying to scare us?
Republicans used scare tactics to manipulate the populace after 9/11, and if you can't see that immigration is the new 9/11, then you are very blind indeed. At least Democrats aren't trying to solve a complicated issue by 'simply' deporting people because they understand that there is nothing simple about this sometimes very expensive, drawn-out process, especially when we're talking about hundreds of thousands to potentially millions of people.
In fact, our middle class has eroded almost to the point of disrepair under the neo-cons and yet they continue to distract us by offering us someone to blame; that's what scapegoating is.
Much like Republicans have used the fear of future terrorism to distract the voters from their irresponsibility in the past, this is just the same BS in a different wrapper from the right wing.
Do they really think they can beat the Democrats on domestic issues by blaming illegal immigration while there is so much unrelated government waste, like the hundreds of billions thrown at Iraq? Yeah, good luck with that.

"For the first time in quite some while, we're able to report a dramatic decrease in hates crimes reported in Orange County," Kennedy said. "We're looking at a 20 percent decline in hate crimes in 2007 from 2006 -- really good news.
"The one caveat I have is that hate crimes targeting Latinos have increased 50 percent this year," he said. "That's troubling."
I saw this story on the KNBC website and thought it was encouraging and yet sad at the same time. Hate crimes are down for every minority group in OC, except Latinos. Apparently, discrimination is now seen as a no-no by most, unless it's against the scapegoated minority group du jour. Barack Obama talked about political distractions, and immigration is the mother of all of them! Some people just need someone to blame and have a lot of misplaced anger. Disappointing.

"Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has asked the federal government to review its immigration enforcement priorities, warning that work-site raids on "non-exploitative" businesses could have "severe and lasting effects" on the local economy," according to the L.A. Times.
Hell will freeze over before you EVER see Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido stand up for immigrants in Santa Ana! In fact, I would not be surprised if Pulido actually calls Homeland Security and BEGS for more ICE raids in Santa Ana.
In fact when was the last time you heard ANY of the local Latino politicians in Santa Ana, including the three pictured above, stand up for immigrants? Oh sure, they show up en masse to celebrate Cesar Chavez, who was as anti-immigrant as Pulido. But they never do what Villaraigosa just did.
I am no fan of Villaraigosa, who is even more pervy than the SF Mayor, Gavin Newsom, but there is no question that he is a more effective Mayor than Pulido ever will be. And Villaraigosa opposed Prop. 187, which Pulido openly endorsed. California voters, including Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido, passed Prop. 187, which would have denied benefits to undocumented immigrants. But the law was overturned by a court, and Governor Gray Davis did not defend it. Now we can see what Prop. 187 might have looked like, in Arizona, where Republicans are having a field day as laws like 187 are passing in abundance - and immigrants are fleeing in droves.
"In recent years it has barred illegal immigrants from receiving government services, from winning punitive damages in lawsuits and from posting bail for serious crimes. A new state law shuts down businesses that hire illegal workers. And the sheriff of Maricopa County, which includes Phoenix and three-fifths of the state's population, dispatches his deputies and volunteer "posses" to search for illegal street vendors or immigrants being smuggled through the county," according to the L.A. Times.
The new laws in Arizona have hurt U.S. citizens in the process - but the Republicans passing the laws could care less. Here are just a few examples of how the laws in Arizona are hurting those who are here legally, as cited by the L.A. Times:
- Juan Carlos Ochoa, a naturalized U.S. citizen who lives in an upper-middle-class subdivision near Phoenix named Laguna Hills, can't find a job because a government database classifies him as a possible illegal immigrant.
- Pauline Muñoz, a 39-year-old mother of six who was born in Phoenix, has been afraid to leave her apartment since being held by sheriff's deputies for 15 hours for a driving infraction -- an example of what she believes is racial profiling.
- And businesses that cater to immigrants both legal and illegal report a huge drop in sales, increasing the drag on the state's already troubled economy.
Arizona is succeeding in their pogrom against immigrants in their state. It is hard to say what will happen as a result. Obviously many businesses are already being hurt by these anti-immigrant laws. Currently the recession and the collapse of the housing market is destroying jobs everywhere. Eventually things will turn around. And Arizona will find itself bereft of workers.
Nationally, these sort of laws are shortsighted. Both Medicare and Social Security are headed for bankruptcy. The only way these Ponzi schemes will stay afloat is with a massive influx of new payees at the bottom of the respective pyramids. A new amnesty for immigrants would accomplish that. Cracking down on them instead may doom those who still think Medicare and Social Security will be there for them when they retire.Labels: arizona, Immigration, Mexican immigrants, prop. 187

He's so far off. Here's a guy who fights so hard for the middle class that you have to respect him, but then you peer more closely and realize that his anger is so misplaced! Why does he insist on scapegoating Mexicans? Why did he say on CNN just now that we should address border security before deciding the fate of the 10-12 million people at risk of deportation in this country? Can't we do both simultaneously? Our markets are already open, if we close the borders (for real this time) and invite our already contributing guests to join in on the benefits of our society, then shouldn't that expand our economy?
People always complain about 'losing their job to a Mexican,' but what they don't realize is that in the new global economy, their job could have also either been downsized, outsourced to an Indian firm, or even given to a Mexican in Mexico! I've said it before, and I'll say it again, we need to work with the Mexican government to provide their citizens the opportunities they need to make more-productive lives for themselves in their own country.
The economic reality of the situation here in the States also shows that many Mexicans will underbid their American counterparts for jobs, and they do this because it provides the employer an incentive to take a chance on undocumented labor. Legalize these workers and you'll finally allow them to lift themselves out of their much-cliched poverty. Now we know why the pro-business right doesn't want amnesty. They want to protect the profit margins created by their cheap labor force!
While I still consider border jumping to be tantamount to trespassing, I also think we need to remove the incentive. Seriously, if someone came into my house and stole a loaf of bread because they didn't have anything to feed their family, and then they decided they would pay me back by working it off, I would graciously accept their offer. But I wouldn't invite their whole family to come stay with me either!
By no means am I an immigration activist, It's not an issue that really affected my life in Boston. But now I live in a community surrounded by Mexican immigrants. Some undocumented, some citizens. All very nice, hard-working people, many are just parents trying to give their children the best life possible. Most get a paycheck and pay taxes on that paycheck. In so many ways, these immigrants are just like any other Americans and if they were lined up with 'legal' Mexicans, one would need to be omnipotent to know who is which.
So why is the anti-amnesty agenda gaining steam? It's because of all that hot air coming from a usually cool cucumber. Does that make Lou Dobbs a biofuel?

I often take digs at San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, because he is a bit pervy, but today's L.A. Times has an interesting story about how Newsom is reaching out to immigrants in his city, in a way that Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido, himself an immigrant, never has.
Here are a few excerpts from the L.A. Times' article:
This week, the city launched a campaign featuring TV and radio ads, billboards and bus signs reminding residents of its status as a sanctuary city for illegal immigrants. The $83,000 blitz will include brochures distributed at police stations and hospitals, promising safe access to city services regardless of residency status.
"We're inviting people to come out of the shadows and take advantage of services," said Mayor Gavin Newsom. San Francisco has tried to make this point clear for years.
Since it became a sanctuary city in 1989, the city has barred employees from assisting federal officials with immigration investigations or arrests. But Newsom said recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids in San Francisco and the Bay Area convinced him the city needed to do more.
City officials wanted to remind illegal workers that the city would not play a part in any possible discrimination they might encounter at the hands of the federal government, the mayor said.
Los Angeles does not consider itself a sanctuary city, but officials say police will not take part in federal immigration raids. "Our officers are not immigration officers," said Matt Szabo, a spokesman for Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.
San Francisco's ads -- written in English, Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese and Russian -- encourage residents to seek services and report crimes without fear of being deported.
Newsom, a Democrat who is considering a run for governor in 2010, said he hopes it will have an effect at shelters and psychiatric intake units.
He acknowledged that much of the reaction to the sanctuary program has been negative, attracting even more criticism than his stand on gay marriage.
"We've heard from 'The O'Reilly Factor' types," he said. "But we're convinced that this is the right thing to do."
Wow! Imagine that. A Mayor trying to do the right thing. That NEVER happens in Santa Ana. Pulido ought to be ashamed of himself. GOP hack Tim Whitacre has often told me that Pulido is "practically a Republican." When you consider that he supported the onerous Prop. 187 and he appointed a Minuteman to the Library Board, and he ha always supported GOP SAUSD School Board Member Rosie Avila, it is hard to argue with Whitacre's assertion.
Kudos to Mayor Newsom for stepping up and doing the right thing. I hope that his fellow Democrat, Pulido, takes note.Labels: gavin newsom, Immigration, mayor miguel pulido, san francisco

There were a couple stories in our local newspapers today highlighting the disaster that was last year's Santiago fire. The L.A. Times reported that a "report shows Orange County firefighters didn't have enough resources to deal with the 28,000-acre Santiago blaze that destroyed 42 structures during the fall Southern California wildfire siege." Blame that on the OC GOP - in particular the Red Faced County contingent led the charge against the OC Measure D, which would have provided our OC firefighters with the resources they needed.
And the OC Register reported that a group of day laborers "climbed steep canyon hills Saturday to help prevent possible erosion from last fall's Santiago Fire, symbolizing their desire to contribute in the very communities where they live and seek work in." Isn't that ironic? These are the same Latino day laborers that south county Reeps have been trying to run out of town. The Lake Forest City Council has in fact made it very hard for day laborers to find work. In fact one of the big stories this week involved the arrest of the Placentia Public Works Director when he tried to hire day laborers in Lake Forest.
It is interesting that both our local papers are showing us how bad the OC GOP looks when it comes to the Santiago fire and to the immigrant workers in our community. The O.C. Register is reporting that "A majority of Californians say immigrants help the state’s economy more than they hurt it, according to the latest statewide poll published by the Public Policy Institute of California." Wow! The poll was conducted this month. It clearly showed that the people of the Golden State are not interested in demonizing immigrants. In fact those polled also indicated that most immigrants who have worked here for more than two years ought to be allowed to apply for legal status.
Contrast these findings with the latest stupid press release from Mexican-hater Assemblyman Van Tran. In this release he bragged about the fact that "This week 30 GOP Assemblymembers joined Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s call for President Bush to continue funding for National Guard troops assisting the Border Patrol in our nation’s frontline defense against terrorism and illegal traffickers. "
Terrorism? Have any Mexicans committed acts of terrorism that I am not aware of? Were the Saudis who partook in the hideous 9/11 attacks Mexicans? I don't think so! In fact several hundred Mexicans died in the attack on the World Trade Center towers!
Tran also bragged that "The letter was initiated by Assemblyman Van Tran after Tran led a 20-member delegation from Orange County on a helicopter tour of the California/Mexico border last month."
I wonder how much this ridiculous stunt cost California taxpayers?
As for the drug trade, there would be NONE if not for the fact that Americans like to do drugs. When our politicians come to terms with that (and of course many of THEM like to do drugs too), perhaps they will find a way to legalize some of them so they can tax the sales and get rid of this underground economy?
At any rate, demonizing Mexicans isn't going to fix our state's budget problems. I have a love/hate relationship with Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. I was not happy when he recently fired two state commissioners because they oppose the extension of the 241 tollway. I was happy however when I found out today that Schwarzenegger had a nice thing to say about immigrants. Unlike his CA GOP counterparts, Schwarzenegger is refusing to blame them for the state's budget mess.
Here is an excerpt from the Sacramento Bee:
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, responding to the mother of a Republican state legislator, said Wednesday it would be a "big mistake" to blame illegal immigrants for the state's looming $8 billion budget problem.
The Republican governor was in San Luis Obispo to pitch his budget proposal to local officials and business leaders when he was asked by Diane Blakeslee, mother of Assemblyman Sam Blakeslee, R-San Luis Obispo, how the state should handle fiscal burdens created by illegal immigrants.
"There is, you know, always a time like this where you start pointing the finger at various different elements of what creates the budget mess, and, you know, some may point the finger at illegal immigrants," Schwarzenegger said. "I can guarantee you, I have been now four years in office in Sacramento, I don't think that illegal immigration has created the mess that we are in."
Amen Arnold! Well said. The budget mess in California belongs to our State Legislature and the lame Democrats who run it. If only the Republican legislators would spend more time on fiscal issues and less time angering the voters regarding gay marriage, abortion and immigrants...
The Republican legislators are on the state endangered list precisely because, unlike Schwarzenegger, they rather waste time on social issues instead of focusing on the REAL problems we are facing.Labels: arnold schwarzenegger, Immigration

City Public Works directors make a lot of money. This guy, Gerry Hubble, probably makes well over $150,000 a year. So he can afford to hire legitimate contractors, but now he is being punished for trying to help the poor. Unbelievable.
Why are home owners treated as employers when they hire help to work in their garden or do other small jobs around the house? Couldn't you say that the workers are independent contractors? Why are the cops in Lake Forest harassing people who just need a little help around the house?
Of course the Minutemen are thrilled at Hubble's arrest. Now they are threatening to go protest at the Placentia City Hall. I hope they get out of hand so the Placentia cops can arrest them too. I just received the latest newsletter from supposedly moderate State Senator Tom Harman (R-Huntington Beach), who is pictured above with Rosario Marin, the California Secretary of Consumer Affairs. Harman addresses in it an update on a number of immigration bills, which appear to be written by Assemblyman Bob Huff. Here is Harman's post in its entirety:
Illegal Immigration Update
My good friend and Republican colleague, Assemblyman Bob Huff, penned the following situation report of bills recently introduced in the Assembly regarding illegal immigration that I though readers of the Harman Report would enjoy.
California has become “home” to an estimated three million illegal immigrants who have crossed the state’s porous borders seeking work and a better life. Many who reside here illegally, including those who break laws not related to immigration, have created a drain on tax-funded benefits reserved for American citizens and legal immigrants. Assemblyman Bob Huff has introduced a package of five common sense bills to help address this growing problem.
AJR 44 – A bill circulating in Congress would repeal the section of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution allowing for birthright citizenship. This federal policy has resulted in citizenship for babies born in the United States to foreign visitors, and illegal immigrants. This lax policy has served to attract illegal immigrants looking for an easy way to claim state and federal benefits without going through the legal citizenship process. AJR 44 will urge Congress to pass that bill, and stop ignoring the crime of illegal immigration.
AB 2418 – This bill will deny bail to any illegal immigrant that has been charged with a gang-related crime or a violent felony. AB 2418 will ensure that illegal immigrant criminals receive the punishment they deserve for crimes committed and stop them from jumping bail to flee to their home country to avoid prosecution.
AB 2420 – San Francisco and Los Angeles have declared themselves “sanctuary cities,” prohibiting their local authorities from cooperating with federal immigration officials. AB 2420 will stop local entities and authorities from establishing themselves as “sanctuary cities,” eliminating conflicting governmental policies. AB 2421 – Due to the federal government’s inability and ineffectiveness to enforce immigration laws at the state level, AB 2421 outlines a business license revocation process for employers who hire illegal immigrants within California. AB 2422 – This bill will require that local authorities report juveniles who have been charged with a violent felony to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, to ensure the dangerous juvenile is deported back to their home country. While it is difficult to find and deport illegal immigrants, those who commit violent felonies should be swiftly deported.
“While a comprehensive solution to illegal immigration must come from the federal government, it is time to stop wringing our hands, and adopt these common sense illegal immigration reform bills which will reduce the negative impacts of illegal immigrants on our society and state budget,” stated Assemblyman Huff.
I could not agree more with Assemblyman Huff. I am hopeful that my colleagues across the aisle will see the light before it is too late for our state to financially rebound from the costs associated with providing social and welfare programs to any and all regardless of citizenship.
It appears to me that Huff, and Harman, are piling on immigrants. I am disappointed. I would expect better from two moderate Republicans. A major study recently revealed that immigrants are committing less crimes than people born here. Immigrants are the reason our Social Security system has not collapsed as they are paying into it with no hope, in most cases, of getting anything from it. The biggest reason to do another amnesty would be to add millions of new payees into the Social Security system, to keep that Ponzi scheme going.
If you want to let Harman know how you feel about these bills, please email him at this link. I wonder if he knows that the first State Constitution in California was written in Spanish, and that we had Mexican Governors and Legislators long before California was overrun by the Americans? Or that the Spanish Governor of California during this country's Revolutionary War gave money and much-needed supplies to General George Washington. Somehow I doubt it.Labels: bob huff, Immigration, Mexican immigrants, tom harman

Will the conservative Neanderthals at the California GOP never learn? The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that, "The Canadian political operative hired by the California Republican Party on a coveted H-1B visa to do campaign consulting has been fired after it was revealed he was apparently working in violation of immigration law."
Busted! So the party that hates immigrants hired an illegal immigrant? Priceless. The CA GOP is floundering in a toilet of its own making.
Here are a few more excerpts from the Chronicle's article:
The dismissal, announced this week, came after The Chronicle reported last month that Christopher Matthews apparently violated federal immigration law when he also earned money from a second employer.
Matthews, a Canadian citizen, was hired last year as deputy political director for the California Republican Party, with responsibility for handling campaign operations and information technology for the country's largest state GOP operation, U.S. Department of Labor records showed.
Matthews "no longer works for the California Republican Party," state party spokesman Hector Barajas confirmed Thursday.
But Federal Election Commission records show that Matthews also had earned nearly $6,000 this year working for a different employer - the San Diego Republican Party.
Ron Nehring, the state GOP chairman, is a San Diego resident who was the former head of the San Diego Republican Party.
Jonathan Buettner, spokesman for the San Diego GOP, said Matthews was a legal employee under a TN visa - a renewable one-year special visa for Canadian and Mexican professional workers created under the North American Free Trade Agreement.
Officials from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services division of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, however, said immigration law prohibits such dual visa arrangements.
"Would they have done that if his name was Mario Lopez?" asked one GOP official who was in on the discussions, speaking on condition of anonymity.
At the state GOP convention in San Francisco last month, the party's platform committee rejected a plank that would have supported an increase in H1-B visas.
Matthews was hired for his job by Michael Kamburowski, an Australian citizen who in 2007 was named the state GOP's chief operations officer. Kamburowski resigned the $130,000-a-year post after The Chronicle reported last year that he had sued federal officials who jailed him in 2004 for alleged visa violations and attempted to deport him.
The Chronicle reported this week that federal court records also show that Kamburowski had no valid visa or work permit - and no legal right to stay in the United States - during the five years he worked as a high-profile lobbyist for prominent conservative Grover Norquist, a longtime adviser to President Bush and other GOP leaders.
Pretty funny that the CA GOP uses a Latino spokes-hole. Particularly when you consider that Jon Fleischman, the CA GOP Vice Chair South, blasted immigrants at the recent CA GOP convention in San Francisco.Labels: CA GOP, Immigration, ron nehring

A new study "released Monday shows that immigrants in California are, in fact, far less likely than U.S.-born Californians are to commit crime. While people born abroad make up about 35% of California's adult population, they account for only about 17% of the adult prison population, the report by the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) showed. Indeed, among men ages 18 to 40 — the demographic most likely to be imprisoned — those born in the U.S. were 10 times more likely than foreign-born men to be incarcerated." (Time Magazine)
The Minutemen love to say that immigrants are a bunch of lawbreakers, but check out this excerpt from Time Magazine:
The new report even bolsters claims by some academics that increased immigration makes the United States safer. A second study, released earlier this month by Washington-based nonprofit Immigration Policy Center, found that on the national level, U.S.-born men ages 18-39 are five times more likely to be incarcerated than are their foreign-born peers. And, while the number of illegal immigrants in the country doubled between 1994 and 2005, violent crime declined by nearly 35% and property crimes by 26% over the same period. The PPIC even determined that on average, between 2000 and 2005, cities such as Los Angeles that took in a higher share of recent immigrants saw their crime rates fall further than cities with a lower influx of illegals.
Even O.C. Register editorial columnist Steven Greenhut, who by his own admission has never written about immigration, wrote about this study in a column published today. I loved his last sentence, "An obvious conclusion is that crime would fall dramatically if America rid itself of all U.S.-born male residents and replaced them with immigrants, legal or otherwise."
There is however a downside to the story, illustrated again by an excerpt from Time Magazine:
Steven Camarota, research director for the Center for Immigration Studies, which favors tighter immigration controls, warns that even if immigrants are less likely to commit crimes, their children and grandchildren may be more likely to end up on the wrong side of the law. He points out that U.S. Department of Justice statistics show that Hispanics make up 20% of state and Federal prison populations in 2005, a rise of 43% since 1990. At that rate, one in every six Hispanic males born in the U.S. today can expect to be imprisoned during his lifetime — more than double the rate for non-Hispanic whites, but lower than that of African-Americans of the same age. "That means the children and grandchildren of immigrants are committing a lot of crime, making this a long-term problem," Camarota says, before adding, "That's much worse news."
An article in the California Progress Report further illustrates the issue of who is incarcerated, and makes the case that there are too many Americans in jail. Here are a few excerpts:
Nationwide, the prison population grew by 25,000 last year, bringing it to almost 1.6 million. Another 723,000 people are in local jails. The number of American adults is about 230 million, meaning that one in every 99.1 adults is behind bars.
Incarceration rates are even higher for some groups. One in 36 Hispanic adults is behind bars, based on Justice Department figures for 2006. One in 15 black adults is, too, as is one in nine black men between the ages of 20 and 34.
Most people are familiar with the "three-strikes" sentencing law passed by the voters in 1994, but that was just the most extreme example of a thirty-year trend toward increasing sentencing laws; in fact, in those thirty years the state legislature passed over 1,000 laws increasing sentencing for all manner of crimes, and not ONE reducing sentencing. As a result, state prisons are woefully overcrowded, the nonviolent offenders who enter them don't get treatment or job placement or rehabilitation but essentially a college-level program in how to commit violent crime, and this facilitates the nation's worst recidivism rate. So incarcerating more and more citizens does not make the state safer; in fact, it has the opposite effect.
So yes, we do have issues with regard to incarceration. But immigrants don't appear to be part of the problem.Labels: crime, Immigration, Mexican immigrants, three strikes

Yikes! The Minutemen are going to have a field day with this story. Apparently the State of Arizona recently passed a law "punishing employers who hire illegal immigrants," according to the AP.
Here are some excerpts from the AP:
Parents are pulling students out of school. Construction workers are abandoning their jobs. Families are hastily moving out of apartments. Two months after Arizona enacted a law punishing employers who hire illegal immigrants, the law is already achieving one of its goals: Scores of immigrants are fleeing to other states or back to their Latin American homelands.
Gaby Espinoza, who has been unemployed since November, is among those affected. She gave up looking for a job because of the law and may have to return to Mexico.
Espinoza's husband works here legally, but the law means that employers must ask her for papers, and she faces the daily fear of being deported.
"There's no work over there in Mexico," said Espinoza, who has three U.S.-born children. "People there live so poorly. Here, my kids have health insurance and Medicare. Over there, there's nothing."
Jose Perez Leon, a laborer in Phoenix who wants to return to his home in Mexico City, said jobs were plentiful when he came to Arizona about 18 months ago but began to dry up in the last three months.
"I don't like it here anymore because of everything that's happening," he said. "There's no work."
The Republican-controlled Legislature and Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano approved the law last summer out of frustration with federal efforts to curb illegal immigration. It took effect Jan. 1.
The law suspends or revokes the business licenses of violators and was intended to reduce the economic incentive for immigrants to sneak across the border. Illegal immigrants account for an estimated one in 10 workers in Arizona, which is the nation's busiest gateway for illegal immigration.
Oh boy. I wonder how soon other states will start enacting similar laws. Here in California we are staring at a $16 billion budget deficit (Mercury News). How soon before the remaining Republican legislators start screaming about bringing back Prop. 187?
I am surprised that the Arizona Governor, Janet Napolitano, signed the law in question. She is a Democrat. I can only surmise that she was under a lot of pressure. And now that the law appears to be doing what it was designed to do, she certainly cannot undo it.
I wonder if this will become a campaign issue in the presidential race, after all one of the participants, Senator John McCain, is from Arizona. I don't know if he supports this law since he is known for supporting a new amnesty. That would fly in the face of this law.
This situation certainly is one we will keep an eye on.Labels: arizona, Immigration

Times is reporting that "Illegal immigrants from Mexico and other Latin American countries are 50% less likely than U.S.-born Latinos to use hospital emergency rooms in California, according to a study published Monday in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine."
Wow! This study sinks one of the Minutemen's biggest lies...that immigrants are ruining our healthcare system by overusing hospital ER services.
Here are a few more excerpts from the L.A. Times article:
"The current policy discourse that undocumented immigrants are a burden on the public because they overuse public resources is not borne out with data, for either primary care or emergency department care," said Alexander N. Ortega, an associate professor at UCLA's School of Public Health and the study's lead author. "In fact, they seem to be underutilizing the system, given their health needs."
Ortega's study is not the first to find that illegal immigrants use fewer healthcare services than people born in the U.S. But his study used the largest sample, analyzing data from 42,044 participants of the 2003 California Health Interview Survey, a randomized telephone survey conducted by the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research and the California Department of Public Health.
And while other studies have attributed lower usage to immigrants simply being younger and healthier than the overall population, the study published Monday took into account age, health status, insurance status and poverty level. All such factors being equal, it found, immigrants still made fewer visits to physicians and were 30% less likely than U.S.-born Latinos to have a regular source of healthcare.
Dr. Felix Nuñez, a Los Angeles-based family physician and former medical director of the South Central Family Health Center, said the findings confirm what he sees in clinics.
Illegal immigrants are infrequent patients for primary care visits, he said, because being asked for ID cards, Social Security numbers and employment histories makes them nervous. They fear being reported to authorities, even though the information is used only to determine Medi-Cal eligibility or to set a sliding-scale fee.
What did surprise Nuñez was the relatively low use of emergency rooms by illegal immigrants.
"My gut would have told me that they'd be higher users of emergency services because they're not coming in for routine, preventive care," he said. "This kind of study is really important because it forces you to look at the data and rethink your assumptions."Labels: healthcare, Immigration, Mexican immigrants

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors is expected to give final approval Tuesday to a plan that would mandate that identification cards be made available to all residents regardless of their immigration status. The measure which was sponsored by Supervisor Tom Ammiano would make it easier for undocumented immigrants and others easier access to services and a way to prove residency in the city. This bold move by the elected leaders in San Francisco should be mirrored by the folks here in Santa Ana.
According to an article in todays edition of the Los Angeles Times, "All city departments and companies with city contracts would be required to accept the card as valid proof of identification and residency, unless state or federal law requires other documentation".
In 1989 San Francisco passed a measure that declared it a sanctuary city, another move that is long past due in Santa Ana. Santa Ana's undocumented population adds tremendously to the economic success of Orange County. They also provide a large portion of the city's tax base with property and sales tax payments.
According to the Times article Ammiano "also expects that having such government identification will make undocumented residents more likely to report crimes they witness or experience".Labels: drivers licenses, Immigration, sean mill

"Republican presidential candidate Tom Tancredo on Monday unveiled a television ad depicting a hooded terrorist detonating a bomb inside a shopping mall, a message the Colorado congressman said he hoped would vault illegal immigration to its rightful place at the center of the campaign," according to the L.A. Times.
Did I miss something? Were there any Mexican immigrants involved in 9/11? All of the previous mass terrorist attacks in this country were committed by white guys. The only Mexicans involved in 9/11 were the three hundred or so who perished in the World Trade Towers. They worked there.
But wait, there's more. "The 30-second spot, which began airing on cable television in Iowa, casts Tancredo as the only candidate brave enough to buck political convention and discuss the true threat of immigration -- terrorists crossing into the U.S. To view the ad, click here."
If any terrorists have indeed entered the U.S. through our southern border, that is not the fault of the people of Mexico. The blame lies with our federal government.
Here are a few more excerpts from the L.A. Times article:
Dennis Goldford, a professor of politics at Drake University in Des Moines, called the Tancredo spot "an incredibly fear-based kind of advertisement that some might say is trying to terrorize people into supporting his view."
The new ad says Tancredo would protect Americans from "jihadists who froth with hate." An immigration activist says it's Tancredo "frothing with hate."
"I think this is political pandering at its worst," said spokeswoman Clarissa Martinez of the Coalition for Comprehensive Immigration Reform, which backed a congressional compromise that would have allowed some illegal immigrants to gain citizenship. "Unfortunately, we may see more ads like this in 2008."
The Tancredo ad begins with the image of a gloved hand jamming a bomb into a backpack. Then it follows a hooded figure, whose face cannot be seen, strolling through a mall as a narrator decries "20 million aliens who have come to take our jobs" and "Islamic terrorists [who] now freely roam U.S. soil."
In an accompanying radio spot, the congressman promises to "prosecute those who provide sanctuary to anyone who would harm us, deport all those who do not belong here, and put the military on the border if necessary."
That last statement is amazing in its stupidity. Just look at the chart above, which denotes "Hispanics in the U.S. Civilian Labor Force and Military Services, 1997 to 2004." If it were not for Latinos, the U.S. military would be grossly understaffed.
I do think that we will see more GOP candidates going the way of Tancredo as they fan the fires of hate in return for votes. Mitt Romney, in particular is going full speed in that direction. In fact, Romney recently "promised if elected to cut federal funding for cities and states that he considers tolerant of illegal immigration, according to the L.A. Times. Romney also "repeated statements he has made in recent days that he would deny funding to so-called sanctuary cities, states that issue driver's licenses to illegal immigrants and states that allow the children of illegal immigrants to receive in-state tuition discounts at universities."
Romney and Tancredo are significant threats to U.S. Latinos. The GOP is in danger of not only losing the White House, but also losing Latino voters, for generations to come. Even Orange County, where the GOP has ruled for years, will eventually see Latinos become the majority. Here in the O.C., Mike Schroeder has put himself and Assemblyman Van Tran's legion of Mexican haters firmly behind Romney. That alone is reason for area Republicans to vote for anyone other than Romney - and his soulmate Tancredo.Labels: Immigration
