As noted in our introduction to this year’s general election coverage, the filing period for all races is underway; it ends this Friday, August 7 (or 8/6, for cities closed on 8/7, and with some extensions to 8/12) for all races that have made it this far.  This will be updated as need be and time allows.

OK, technically, this is a shot from Orange County *Florida* — but don’t they look happy?

Brea Unified School District

Area 2

Incumbent Keri Kropke apparently isn’t running. Challenger Deana Miller has qualified, but there will be an extension.

Area 3

Incumbent Paul Ruiz has qualified and is currently unopposed.

Area 5

Incumbent Gail Lyons appears not to be running.  Challenger Lauren Barnes has qualified.  This will apparently go to overtime.

Capistrano Unified School District

Area 1

Incumbent Amy Hanacek has qualified.  Potential challenger Jason Spates looks like he only pinged.  Filing will end on Friday.

Area 2

Incumbent Jim Reardon looks like he isn’t running.  Challenger Pamela Braunstein has qualified.  This looks like overtime.

Area 5

Appointed incumbent Krista Castellanos has qualified and will face “Adjuct Professor” Jasmine Funes and “Certified Public Accountant” Paul Hebbard.

Garden Grove Unified School District

Area 1

Incumbent Terri Rocco has qualified. One challenger pulled papers; the other only pinged.  No overtime.

Area 3

Incumbent Walter Muneton has qualified and is unopposed.

Area 5

Incumbent Dina Nguyen has qualified.  Challenger Patrick Cahill appears to have done everything necessary to qualify.  No overtime.

Irvine Unified School District

Area 1

Incumbent Laura Brooks has qualified and is unopposed.

Area 3

Incumbent Betty Carroll has not pulled papers; no indication as to whether she is eligible.

  • Bethany Huang has qualified
  • Douglas Euper has qualified

Area 5

  • Incumbent Paul Bokota has qualified —  no overtime
  • Demetra Arvanitidis has qualified
  • Aarti Kaushal has pulled papers

Laguna Beach Unified School District

Two seats open; neither Jan Vickers and Peggy Wolff, the incumbents, have done more than pull.  Two others are pings only.

  • Amy Kramer has qualified
  • Sheri Morgan has qualified

Los Alamitos Unified School District

It looks like this district has new trustee areas, some with multiple incumbents, some with none

Area 2

One open seat.  Marlys Davidson & Diana D Hill are the incumbents; not sure if they’re eligible.  One ping only.  This should go into overtime.

  • Chris Forehan has qualified
  • Jody Roubanis has qualified

Area 4

No incumbent, no should end tomorrow.  Scott Fayette was a ping only.  As I recall, it gets filled by the Board.

Area 5

Incumbent Megan Cutuli has almost finished filing; incumbent Karen Russell never started.  So, presuming that Russell is eligible, this should go into overtime.

Newport Mesa Unified School District

Area 1

Incumbent Vicki Snell and challenger Leah Ersolyu have both qualified.

Area 3

The incumbent is Martha Fluor, who hasn’t pulled paper.  I don’t know if she’s eligible.

Carol Crane and Charles Kent Booker have both qualified.

Area 6

The incumbent is Dana Black, who is not on the list.

Krista Weigand and Amy Peters have both qualified.

Orange Unified School District

Area 2

Incumbent John Ortega has qualified.

Tiger Cosmos has pulled papers only.

Area 3

  • Alexia L Deligianni-Brydges, the incumbent, has qualified
  • Ana Page has pulled papers; it’s not clear whether she’ll submit and qualify.

Area 6

Barbara Lebsack is the incumbent, but is not on the list.

  • Carrie Lundell has qualified
  • Alexis Muñoz has qualified

Placentia/Yorba Linda Unified School District

Area 1

Eric Padget and Carol Downey are incumbents.  If Downey eligible, there will be overtime.

  • Eric Padget has qualified
  • Paoling Guo has qualified
  • Shawn Youngblood has qualified

Area 2

No incumbent, so this ends Friday.

  • Lashé Rodriguez has qualified
  • Joshua Correa has qualified
  • Marilyn Anderson has qualified

Area 3

The incumbent, Judi Carmona, is not listed.  No idea if she’s eligible.

  • Misty Janssen has qualified
  • Susan Metcalf has qualified
  • Leandra Blades has qualified
  • Mike Nicosia has qualified

(Wow — an office people actually want!)

Saddleback Valley Unified School District

Area 2

The incumbent, Edward Wong, has qualified.

Tricia Yee hasn’t gone beyond pulling papers.  No overtime.

Area 3

Suzie Swartz, the incumbent, has qualified and is currently unopposed.

Area 4

Amanda Morrell, the incumbent, has qualified.  This will not go into overtime.

Benjamin Wu looks like he has done everything necessary to qualify.  A third candidate only pulled.

Santa Ana Unified School District

Three seats open, four have pulled papers, one has qualified.  Barring two other incumbents filing, this filing period will go on until 8/12

The incumbents are Carolyn Torres, Rigo Rodriguez, and Alfonso Alvarez

  • Carolyn Torres has qualified
  • Cecilia Aguinaga has qualified
  • Oscar Reyes has qualified
  • Alfonzo Alvarez has qualified

The remaining incumbent, Rigo Rodriguez, has not filed yet.  If he doesn’t by Friday, there’s an extension for everyone but him.  I saw some indication today, though, that he will.

Tustin Unified School District

Area 1

Tammie Bullard, the incumbent, has qualified.

Allyson Damikolas has qualified.

Kirk Hahn has qualified.

Area 2

Francine Scinto and James Laird are the incumbents.  Scinto has not filed; no idea if she’s eligible.

  • James Laird has qualified.
  • Susan Stocks has qualified.

Area 4

There’s no incumbent, so this ends on Friday.

Jonathan Stone has qualified.

A second candidate apparently just pinged.

And that’s all we have for the Unified districts!

About Greg Diamond

Somewhat verbose attorney, semi-retired due to disability, residing in northwest Brea. Occasionally runs for office against bad people who would otherwise go unopposed. Got 45% of the vote against Bob Huff for State Senate in 2012; Josh Newman then won the seat in 2016. In 2014 became the first attorney to challenge OCDA Tony Rackauckas since 2002; Todd Spitzer then won that seat in 2018. Every time he's run against some rotten incumbent, the *next* person to challenge them wins! He's OK with that. Deposed as Northern Vice Chair of DPOC in April 2014 (in violation of Roberts Rules) when his anti-corruption and pro-consumer work in Anaheim infuriated the Building Trades and Teamsters in spring 2014, who then worked with the lawless and power-mad DPOC Chair to eliminate his internal oversight. Expelled from DPOC in October 2018 (in violation of Roberts Rules) for having endorsed Spitzer over Rackauckas -- which needed to be done. None of his pre-putsch writings ever spoke for the Democratic Party at the local, county, state, national, or galactic level, nor do they now. One of his daughters co-owns a business offering campaign treasurer services to Democratic candidates and the odd independent. He is very proud of her. He doesn't directly profit from her work and it doesn't affect his coverage. (He does not always favor her clients, though she might hesitate to take one that he truly hated.) He does advise some local campaigns informally and (so far) without compensation. (If that last bit changes, he will declare the interest.)
