At 5:00PM today, California’s ban on high capacity firearm magazines will come back into effect. Read more about the decision here and here.
So, what say you? How should Governor Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Xaiver Becerra approach the recent court decision?
This is your weekend open thread. Fire away.
*We have never seen a extended magazine pull a trigger. We have never heard of one pulling a trigger. The old Thompson Sub-Machine Guns of the Al Capone era that had
very rare 100 round magazines….never pulled their own triggers. The Single Shot Rifles that needed to be loaded by the Muzzle with an oil rag….never pulled their own triggers either. The modern AK-47 which every Iraqui has in his closet in Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia or Egypt…..does not pull its own trigger.
The situation is silly. If you can load ONE bullet into a firearm, someone still has to take that knowledge and pull the trigger. 10 rounds or 20? 20, 30, 40 rounds? 50 round Drums? “The evil that men do is entured in their bones….” said Honest Abe. So don’t blame the firearm…..blame the owner. Pit Bulls do not kill by themselves…..they have to be trained, abused or encouraged to do so. Welcome to Fox News and the Trump Administration!!
Certainly, the difference between zero bullets in the air and one bullet in the air, which is what Ron addresses, is the most significant increment. But once we’ve crossed that boundary, and we already have an “evil man” engaged in shooting, we face the question of whether there’s a difference between 1 (or 6 or so) and 20, 50, or 100. And that difference *does* matter, just as the difference between an aggressive child being able to lay hands on a cardboard tube versus a knife or gun matters.
The most interesting thing about the “high-capacity magazine” argument, in my book, is that the standard argument made by gun-use advocates — that “the best thing to counter a bad person with a gun is a good person with a gun” — doesn’t apply. In the vast majority of instances, a “good person with a gun” shouldn’t *need* a high-capacity magazine to neutralize a bad person with a gun. If they do, they probably aren’t that good of a shooter; the most likely consequence of being able to spray 100 rounds at an active shooter is more collateral damage. So the benefit gained by allowing access to that much ammunition without reloading is very small, in the case of the “good person” protecting others, while the cost is very high in the case of the “bad person” seeking to maximize damage against others.
Counter point:
Every single good cop in America carries a sidearm with a high capacity magazine.
Frighteningly, so does every bad one.
Unless you’re arguing that every citizen/resident should have equal firepower to a cop, so?

The majority of gun deaths in the United States are from suicide. 99% of homicides are committed with hand guns. Let’s face the truth, opioid overdoses, car crashes, and abortions kill far more than guns do in our country. Much of the gun deaths in the United States are also in gun free zones like Chicago and Washington DC. I’m not going to give up my rights to make other people feel comfortable. I’d rather deal with the far more important issues of stopping the suicide and opioid epidemic which kill far more in our country. The constitution doesn’t age we must protect the second amendment!
Git em, patriot!
If anyone wants proof that we don’t routinely delete comments that some of our editors find obnoxious….
*When it comes to protecting your family, you will use whatever you have available. The old six guns of the Cowboy era…..included two six guns for certain pistoleros. The shotgun was much in evidence during the 1890’s and used with impunity during the war in the Philippines. As was the Colt .45 Auto. That firearm used a seven round magazine with one in the pipe…..meaning a total of eight rounds….before you had to reload. The Moros were hype up on Coca Leaves and attacked in mass. One well placed .45 bullet took out the 120 lb Moros with ease. Today, the SIG 226 which is used in abundance around the country has extended magazines of up to 18 rounds, along with the various Glocks. In our humble opinion…..if you are being attacked by three assailants with Glocks or SIG 226’s ….you probably need the same to protect your
family to the best of your ability. A solid Remington 870 Shotgun utilizing slugs is also
a pretty good deterrent…unless of course…. they have one too! Of course, if you have either of these……it could dull their enthusiasm if probably utilized.
Wow, deep TV and moovie influence, a whole herd of fantasists.
*Yeah, when did you get Netflix? Just curious! Have you seen “Murder Mountain” and know you CA History?
