With all of the excitement, we forgot to post a Weekend Open Thread! And we’re clearly going to need one, so here it is. I’d been looking for a place to put this nice photo anyway, and this is perfect!
About Greg Diamond
Somewhat verbose attorney, semi-disabled and semi-retired, residing in northwest Brea. Occasionally ran for office against jerks who otherwise would have gonr unopposed. Got 45% of the vote against Bob Huff for State Senate in 2012; Josh Newman then won the seat in 2016. In 2014 became the first attorney to challenge OCDA Tony Rackauckas since 2002; Todd Spitzer then won that seat in 2018. Every time he's run against some rotten incumbent, the *next* person to challenge them wins! He's OK with that.
Corrupt party hacks hate him. He's OK with that too.
He does advise some local campaigns informally and (so far) without compensation. (If that last bit changes, he will declare the interest.)
His daughter is a professional campaign treasurer. He doesn't usually know whom she and her firm represent. Whether they do so never influences his endorsements or coverage. (He does have his own strong opinions.) But when he does check campaign finance forms, he is often happily surprised to learn that good candidates he respects often DO hire her firm. (Maybe bad ones are scared off by his relationship with her, but they needn't be.)
OK, Vern: no fair looking this up in our archives! Who is the source of this (timely) quote?
You get three guesses. I’ll post the answer by 9:00 tonight or so.
I don’t think I wrote that, cuz I don’t use the word “culture” that much. Is it when Duane or Gabriel used to write for us?
Nope: “Mayor Quimby.”
Good old Gus Ayer! Link?
It’s on this (also still-timely) post: http://www.orangejuiceblog.com/2012/07/take-back-anaheim-rallies-tomorrow-on-city-hall-steps-for-justice-accountability-and-democracy/

In today’s email:
ORANGE COUNTY WOMEN FED UP WITH TRUMP-SUPPORTING MATT HARPER
Local Democrats & Republicans Fueling the Cottie Petrie-Norris for Assembly Campaign
PHOTO: Sunday, November 4, 2018 – Volunteer Canvass Dispatch in Newport Beach
COSTA MESA, CA – Women in coastal Orange County are turning out in droves to volunteer and vote for Cottie Petrie-Norris for State Assembly. Locally, 488 Orange County individuals and 19 organizations have contributed, putting Cottie Petrie-Norris in the top 10 most grassroots campaigns in California. Incumbent Matt Harper is ranked the second least effective legislator in Sacramento, and it’s no surprise he’s one of the least effective fundraisers, with less than half of 1% of his donations coming from the grassroots in Assembly District 74. Harper is considered to be one of the most politically vulnerable legislators in California due to a combination of his extremist positions and relatively moderate district where voters are desperate for real representation, not just an incumbent who flies up to Sacramento to collect a paycheck.
“In the Assembly, I will fight for the priorities that are important to the people of our community – quality public education, protecting our coastlines, ensuring reproductive freedom, and equal pay for equal work,” said Cottie Petrie-Norris, candidate for State Assembly in District 74, which includes Laguna Beach, Costa Mesa, Newport Beach, Laguna Woods, and portions of Huntington Beach and Irvine.
BACKGROUND: Cottie-Petrie Norris, a Yale-educated mother and who has had a successful 20-year career in finance and technology, is running against an extremist Republican in Assembly District 74, a swing seat in coastal Orange County. Republican incumbent Matt Harper isn’t serving the people of Orange County and AD 74 has moved from “Leans Republican” to “Toss-up”. Matt Harper has an atrocious voting record on the things that matter to women, which is why every major local and statewide women’s group has endorsed Cottie.
-Harper voted against the Fair Pay Act in 2016 – one of only 2 legislatures to vote against this landmark legislation
-Harper opposes a women’s right to choose – even in the case of rape, incest or if a woman’s life is at risk
-Harper voted against banning domestic abusers from owning guns

*AVAILABLE FOR COMMENT: Local Republicans fed up with incumbent Matt Harper not bringing taxpayer dollars back to Orange County.
I still have no idea who to vote for on the Newport Beach city council elections and the school district governing board member election. Like, what am I even supposed to base my decision off? There’s zero third party information about any of the candidates online – dudes aren’t even significant enough to have a Wikipedia page on them.
OK, hang on. It would be up later tonight, but I’ll do it now.
COUNCIL
District 1: Mike Glenn
District 3: Tim Stoaks
District 4: Roy Englebrecht
District 6: Joy Brenner
(Voting for Brenner over Scott Peotter is the Prime Directive)
Newport-Mesa School District
Area 2: Charlene Metoyer, the incumbent? If you demand change, then Michelle Murphy. Both seem OK.
Area 4: Karen Yelsey
Area 5: Paul Hillson
Area 7: Ashley Anderson
Here’s a story in the Pilot you should read:

You’re a lifesaver, diamond. I have midterms Wednesday and barely have enough time to vote let alone research. I swear they pull that crap purposefully.
Happy to help! (But having been a professor, I can assure you that they don’t do much of anything purposefully!)
Thank you! Sent people over to read your piece on judges and much other pre-election coverage.
Now that Huntington Beach attorney Michael Gates has had time to gloat about his unopposed “win” (in which it is looking like maybe a quarter of the city actually voted for him) it is time that he look into the problem of local voter fraud.
As a staunch Trump supporter certainly he must be committed to rooting out all potential illegal voting in the areas that he has been elected and entrusted to uphold the law.
An easy lead in a possible case is this woman named Kelly Gates. She posted on multiple public facebook forums her intention to cast a vote for a school board race in a district where she does not reside. Donald Trump promised that anyone caught committing voter fraud “will be subject to the Maximum Criminal Penalties allowed by law.” And as a Trump loyalist we must expect no less from Michael Gates.
C. A, Gates has taken the last few hours off from incessantly tooting his own horn to drop knowledge that so many people are suggesting that he run for congress next time if Harley wins.
A successful prosecution locally of one of the greatest of all republican fears; alleged voter fraud, could possibly go a long way in distracting these currently imaginary future voters in this run for congress fever dream from the fact that he had an uneducated bigot running for school board participating in a fundraiser at his home. And all the other immature and questionable behavior he has exhibited this election season.
Make Huntington Beach Great Again, Gates! End local voter fraud!
Kelly Gates really ought to, no joke, clarify her comment on voting for a candidate outside of her district.
I have a good idea for the next election Gates can be in: a recall!
I concur. It’s serious.
Maybe it is best if it is reported to an outside agency to investigate due to the obvious conflict of interest.
Using her husband’s position to possibly influence a local election TWICE (if one counts the still unsubstantiated and serious Briscoe accusations) with potentially misleading statements is also problematic.
And don’t forget Gates falsely going after Dan Kalmick by posting an incorrect legal accusation about him on a public forum with tens of thousands of potential voters. Who knows how much that impacted Mr. Kalmick’s bid for a council seat.
FPPC would be the first stop. Don’t bring the DA’s office into anything until Racky is out of there.
If you feel like confidentially revealing your identity to me we can talk about this more off-line.
I wish I knew who that commenter was too, they’ve been making really good HB comments for a long time now.
