Movie-star handsome reformist Democrat Ammar Campa-Majjar, whose CA-50 district is just south of CA-49, where Mike Levin is fighting it out with Diane Harkey, just caught the sort of huge break that is the reason why a party should ALWAYS run a candidate in EVERY race.
Duncan Hunter the Younger, son of the long-term previous Congressman of that same given name, has just been indicted on “charges related to the misuse of $250,000 in campaign funds for personal expenses and the filing of false campaign finance records.”
That sound you hear is that of Darrell Issa, who had considered running in CA-50 after voters in CA-49 indicated in 2016 that they had had quite enough of him for one century, thank you, butting his head into a wall because it’s a Top Two primary and there’s nothing he can do to get that seat now!
According an an email blast, though, CNN is reporting that ‘Many Hunter allies believe he will stay in his House seat while fighting the charges” despite his facing some of the most extreme cases of campaign finance violations in modern U.S. history.”
Even before this news, Ammar was polling within single digits of Hunter in a race that wasn’t expected to be that close. Studies show that a scandal this size is worth about ten points in the polls, so that would make things neck-and-neck!
Now Ammar wants money and, while he’s not paying for an ad here, that link at the left is to his ActBlue link — because we’re pretty sure that some people may want to know how to donate. Out of fairness, we might normally include a link to Duncan Hunter’s fundraising page as well — but we’re afraid that if we made it easy for you to give Hunter money it’s too likely that he’d steal it, and we don’t want to become accessories to a crime. It’s much safer for all of us if you give your money to Ammar instead.
I’d argue that even Republicans would be smart to give money to Ammar right now — because a huge and immediate influx of money would be a signal to the Republican powers that be that Hunter’s seat is beyond saving. But hey, if you want to see your party dump millions of dollars into this seat help by this indicted fraudster, when Ammar has a good chance of winning anyway, it’s not my place as a Democrat to tell you how to run your affairs. OK, I do that all of the time anyway, but still — DRAIN YOUR SWAMP! Get rid of the little chiseler and try again in 2020!
*This is all pretty sad….whether Jr. just listened to the wrong advisor, an errant demanding wife or just the systemic demands of keeping up with the rest of the paid off folks in the Congress. Maybe he didn’t want to take the Big Pharma money? Maybe he didn’t want to take the Big Oil money? Maybe, he just followed in the footsteps of his dad. By the way,
did Sr. pass away or is he still in jail? Who knows? One thing is sure, we liked Duncan
Hunter Jr. alot. He is an Army and Marine Officer and Prior Service in at least two theaters and seemed to serve well. When we interviewed him at the Western CPac Conference back a few year back….he was very knowledgeable and seemed dedicated to doing the right thing. Something evidently happened “in between”. Someone seemed to have led him down the “Primrose Path to Perdition”.
Maybe he didn’t “listen to” anybody and is just crooked.
Why do you have to find a way to excuse him, like blaming his wife? It seems more likely that she could be excused for believing him, if he — the one with a father in Congress — told her that what they were doing was ok.
Dr. D., Think about it this way. Michael Cohen worked very closely with his Ukrainian wife on “everything”. Mueller just made her part of the co-conspiracy
partnership. We are not excusing his conduct…”EVER”, however, it is quite odd
that he seems to be following in his dad’s footsteps. Normally, when these guys
get caught in Congress it is for one of two reasons: (1) Not following the party
game – and voting they way the smoke-filled room guys want….Like Bob Livingston for example. Or Jim Traficant on the Dem side. or (2) Their hubris make them think they are “invisible or impervious” to anything they do. Like Jim Wright or Dan Rostonkowski….. Wrongo! So this could be the case with Jr.,
but knowing his dad’s history….that thought might be a doubtful one.
I think Anna made you write that.
Michael Cohen has a Ukrainian wife? Are you sure that that’s not Manafort?
Remind us what Hunter the Elder did to get himself politically whacked.
OK, OK, OK……Yes, Michael Cohen has a Ukrainian Wife…..isn’t that just too convenient and what a coincidence…eh? As far as the Elder Hunter….is concerned….he was a genuine fine Conservative Legislator and certainly a poster child for Conservative Politics in California. Never met him, but he was a good friend Gil and Anita Ferguson. He got caught up in what they used to call in Bridge Parlance as a “Ruff”. He Left office in disgrace…and you can look him up on Wikipedia or ask Julianne Assange Wikileaks….whatever works for you. As with all of these things….they are usually described as “Complicated”. Misuse of Campaign Funds? Who knows? Did he take huge payouts from Defense Contractors and work weird land deals with his buddy Duke Cunningham? You really have to read the entire story….to reel it all in. Government Watch Dogs had chased the Sr. for years as being totally corrupted by the Military Industrial Complex. You really have to read it for yourself to analyze all the details.
It’s true, readers: Michael Cohen’s wife was born in Ukraine, and so was his brother’s wife:

As the husband of a foreign-born wife, I am going to try not to read too much into that.
Ammar wanted you to see this follow-up:
*Sadly, the best thing for Jr. is to simply resign and put this all behind him. He is a genuine talent….but when he turned Trumpster on us of late…..that was even too much for our friendship and appreciation to endure. You look under Pragmatic in the Dictionary and you will probably find his photo. Sadly, this is a guy we believe you could trust in a fox hole….but maybe not at the Officer’s Club.
A genuine talent? He’s a fucking crooked retard. He says this is all deep-state fake news. And he never closes his mouth.
*Chairman Vern, since you have been around this block several times, you
must know that anyone in public office has their feet of clay…in one way or the other. Jr. served his country…went to war…..tried to do the right thing ..to one degree or another. His Dad was and is still an Icon in SD…..with all the accusations and realities….whatever they are and were. The point is, Jr. could have either jumped on board the Trumpster Express or retired without a strong future in sight. Remember, you have Ratheon and lots of Military Industrial types in SD……for those folks he has been a good and talented representative. The fluff stuff and unattractive Trumpster apologies on Bill Mahr and in several public statements…..are and were..pure political posturing. The truth is that he is under huge pressure by the Republican Establishment to step down and suddenly they find out that you left change in your pocket, when you washed your jeans at the Laundromat….. Anyway, as we said: He does need to resign, grab a great job with a well established company and reconstitute his life with Maggie.
We still wish him well……it’s all just politics….sadly! Jr. needs to get back and hang out with his Military buddies and just relax. IOHO that is!
Theft. Not “just politics” — theft. And cover-up of theft.
