Duncan Hunter INDICTED for Fraud! Ammar Campa Najjar CAN WIN in CA-50!

Not quite in OC — but CLOSE ENOUGH in the case of a HUGE SCANDAL!

Movie-star handsome reformist Democrat Ammar Campa-Majjar, whose CA-50 district is just south of CA-49, where Mike Levin is fighting it out with Diane Harkey, just caught the sort of huge break that is the reason why a party should ALWAYS run a candidate in EVERY race.

Duncan Hunter the Younger, son of the long-term previous Congressman of that same given name, has just been indicted on “charges related to the misuse of $250,000 in campaign funds for personal expenses and the filing of false campaign finance records.”

That sound you hear is that of Darrell Issa, who had considered running in CA-50 after voters in CA-49 indicated in 2016 that they had had quite enough of him for one century, thank you, butting his head into a wall because it’s a Top Two primary and there’s nothing he can do to get that seat now!

According an an email blast, though, CNN is reporting that ‘Many Hunter allies believe he will stay in his House seat while fighting the charges” despite his facing some of the most extreme cases of campaign finance violations in modern U.S. history.”

Even before this news, Ammar was polling within single digits of Hunter in a race that wasn’t expected to be that close.  Studies show that a scandal this size is worth about ten points in the polls, so that would make things neck-and-neck!

Now Ammar wants money and, while he’s not paying for an ad here, that link at the left is to his ActBlue link — because we’re pretty sure that some people may want to know how to donate.  Out of fairness, we might normally include a link to Duncan Hunter’s fundraising page as well — but we’re afraid that if we made it easy for you to give Hunter money it’s too likely that he’d steal it, and we don’t want to become accessories to a crime.  It’s much safer for all of us if you give your money to Ammar instead.

I’d argue that even Republicans would be smart to give money to Ammar right now — because a huge and immediate influx of money would be a signal to the Republican powers that be that Hunter’s seat is beyond saving.  But hey, if you want to see your party dump millions of dollars into this seat help by this indicted fraudster, when Ammar has a good chance of winning anyway, it’s not my place as a Democrat to tell you how to run your affairs.  OK, I do that all of the time anyway, but still — DRAIN YOUR SWAMP!  Get rid of the little chiseler and try again in 2020!

About Greg Diamond

Somewhat verbose attorney, semi-disabled and semi-retired, residing in northwest Brea. Occasionally ran for office against jerks who otherwise would have gonr unopposed. Got 45% of the vote against Bob Huff for State Senate in 2012; Josh Newman then won the seat in 2016. In 2014 became the first attorney to challenge OCDA Tony Rackauckas since 2002; Todd Spitzer then won that seat in 2018. Every time he's run against some rotten incumbent, the *next* person to challenge them wins! He's OK with that. Corrupt party hacks hate him. He's OK with that too. He does advise some local campaigns informally and (so far) without compensation. (If that last bit changes, he will declare the interest.) His daughter is a professional campaign treasurer. He doesn't usually know whom she and her firm represent. Whether they do so never influences his endorsements or coverage. (He does have his own strong opinions.) But when he does check campaign finance forms, he is often happily surprised to learn that good candidates he respects often DO hire her firm. (Maybe bad ones are scared off by his relationship with her, but they needn't be.)
