Community Meeting to Prepare Residents to Speak Against Costly Desalination Plant in Huntington Beach

  • Community members to learn the truth about desalination plant before speaking at State Lands Commission hearing
  • Experts to explain environmental impacts of proposed plant

WHAT: 150 residents are expected to join a town hall meeting to learn the truth about Poseidon Water’s permitting process for its proposed Huntington Beach desalination plant.

Attendees will hear about the role of the California State Lands Commission with the Poseidon Desalination Plant, the shortcomings of the plant’s draft supplemental environmental impact report, and how desalination compares to other water supply options. This town hall is a critical time for residents to learn how to effectively voice their concerns at the State Lands Commission hearing in Orange County later in the month.

WHY: Currently, Poseidon is pushing the State Lands Commission to approve a partial environmental impact report, which fails to fully review the plant’s environmental impacts and examine other water supply alternatives.

The State Lands Commission must authorize a lease of state-owned tidelands for the project to advance. Residents for Responsible Desalination and Orange County Coastkeeper say that instead of doing its due diligence to analyze the full impacts of this plant, the State Lands Commission is proposing to patch together a partial review process and trying to avoid consideration of the whole project as the law requires. Both organizations argue the plant would:

  1. Impose significant and unnecessary costs on Orange County water districts and ratepayer
  2. Set back California’s efforts to advance climate-smart water policy
  3. Fail to alleviate reliance upon, or impacts to, freshwater ecosystems, including the Bay-Delta
  4. Fail to comply with California law and regulations that govern seawater desalination facilities

WHO:

  • Connie Boardman, past mayor of Huntington Beach
  • Residents for Responsible Desalination panel – Joe Geever, Debbie Cook, Ray Hiemstra
  • 150 local residents

WHERE:  Eader Middle School Auditorium

9291 Banning Ave, Huntington Beach, CA 92646

WHEN: Wednesday October 11, 7 p.m.!
