Well, this is an unhappy turn of events. More on this story of an apparent escape from the OC Central Men’s Jail in Santa Ana as it develops.
Meanwhile, if you see any of these guys, and you’re not a Sheriff or other LEO, do not approach them. (That is in part because it may not be these guys, and part because it might be.) Also do not try to kill them, cowboys and cowgirls, because you may not be the best at identifying them from their mug shots. Just call 911 if it’s an emergency and 714-647-7000 otherwise. More information is in the above flyer. In your comments, please do not generalize based on this to all members of an ethnic group ; it is irritating and unfair — and probably also evanescent.
UPDATE Jan. 24
Excerpts from the Chicago Tribune:
Somehow, the men obtained tools that allowed them to cut through the quarter-inch-thick grill on a dormitory wall, then got into plumbing tunnels. Cutting their way through additional half-inch-thick steel bars, the trio made their way to an unguarded area of the roof of the four-story building, where they apparently moved aside some razor wire and rappelled to the ground using elaborately braided ropes made from linens, authorities said.
The escape wasn’t noticed for 16 hours, until a nighttime head count that was delayed about an hour because of a fight involving some other inmates that may — or may not — have been part of the escape plan.
…
“I’ve been in law enforcement for 37 years, always working for sheriff’s departments that manage jails. And escapes do occur from time to time,” Sheriff Sandra Hutchens said. “We try and limit that. We learn from the mistakes. I can tell you that this is a very sophisticated-looking operation. People in jail have a lot of time to sit around and think about ways to defeat our systems.”
And here’s the salacious detail that you’ve been waiting for:
Hossein Nayeri, 37, had been held without bond since September 2014 on charges of kidnapping, torture, aggravated mayhem and burglary. Nayeri and three other men are accused of kidnapping a California marijuana dispensary owner in 2012. They drove the dispensary owner to a desert spot where they believed he had hidden money and then cut off his penis, authorities said.
The police want your help:
We’re in a position where we absolutely need the public’s help. There’s people out there that know who these people are, who may have seen them. We’re asking for phone calls, whether it’s any piece of information you may have. We’re exhausting every lead that we currently have.”
And — there’s a $50,000 reward for information leading to their recapture. OJB is not sure whether that is “apiece” or 1/3 for each or what. If you have actual information, just call them regardless.
UPDATE 1/29, noon
The Orange Juice attended a Little Saigon presser by Supervisors Do and Bartlett, aimed at re-assuring Viet-Americans that they can give info on the escapees, collect their reward, and still stay safe and confidential. But as we were uploading our unremarkable video of that presser, events overtook us, and one of the Viets has been re-captured turned himself in: Bac Duong, 43, the accused “attempted murderer.” He looks pretty nasty, but let’s remember, he hasn’t been convicted, and that is what young Jesús Aguirre was accused AND convicted of.

UPDATE 1/30, 11am
All three back in custody now: http://abc7.com/news/2-outstanding-inmates-taken-into-custody-in-san-francisco/1180430/
The two remaining inmates who had escaped the Orange County Central Men’s Jail on Jan. 22 were taken into custody in San Francisco, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
Hossein Nayeri, 37, and Jonathan Tieu, 20, were arrested by the San Francisco Police Department, according to an OCSD tweet.
Authorities believed Nayeri and Tieu were in the San Jose area and were heading to Fresno because of a family connection Nayeri had…
I’ve been in that jail – many times – strictly for contractor business you understand. I don’t see how anyone can break out of there without inside assistance.
Get ready. Hutchens will use this as an excuse to demand multi-millions more of our county taxdollars to upgrade her jail. And your generous Supervisors will bend over backwards to please her! The Sheriff can do no wrong! As I recall Hutchens eagerly awaited State funds for a rennovation. The State apparently turned her down. Good timing, eh? It’s won’t be the fault of her deputies that these 3 thugs escaped. It’s flawed architecture! Wait for it! It’s coming! Open up your wallets!!!
Perhaps the similar New York escape moths ago caused more prisoners to re-examine their situation and plans than prison officials? Remembering past local press accounts of an Asian gang head that brought in just about every luxury (including his girlfriend) one has to wonder if ANY new funding will be spent on reform, empire building, or whitewash.
They’ve been on the loose now for about 36 hours. An indication that arrangements were made in advance on the outside to secure their freedom. Otherwise had they returned to their normal hangouts they’d be back in custody by this time. Although none of the 3 are Little Lord Fauntleroys – the criminal history of the one fellow from Iran is pretty morbid.
Apparently he (and others) are accused of kidnapping a marijuana dispensary worker (and his GF) and in the process cutting off the man’s private part (and keepig it) then leaving him on the roadside with his GF who was able to go find help. Nasty. Then after the crime Nayeri – the jail escapee – fled to his native Iran where he stayed for a couple months – and was actually arrested in Prague where he transferred flights to visit family in Spain. Stupid. But this guy was probably never a candidate for a Ph.D. in small particle molecular physics. In fact his occupation is listed as: Dog Walker. 🙂
Well, if they don’t find him by next Wednesday my guess is that he’s back in a Tehran suburb walking Persian Mastiffs in the parks. And to the best of my knowledge Iran has no extradition treaty with the US. I mean it just makes sense since the the relations between Iran and the US is about as amicable as between the Hatfields and the McCoys.
But again, don’t expect Hutchens to make any apologies to the public for these 3 very violent criminals escaping from her jail. She made no apologies for the jailgate informant scandal. So why would she apologize for this? It was a freak of nature 1 in 1,000,000 occurrence that was totally beyond the control of her department. Perhaps a matter of divine intervention from a spiritual universe unknown to our culture. Or perhaps a consequence of an outdated jail that we must fork over many many more millions of County dollars to remodel. Or perhaps a need to revisit internal policies that give inmates access to tools that can cut through half-inch steel bars w/o jail deputies hearing such activity. Reminds me of that quote “Is it safe?” in that old Dustin Hoffman flick “Marathon Man”.
The Irvine NIMBYs are gonna go bananas.
Note that this was updated on Jan. 24.
OJB would like to caution all potential criminals not to amputate men’s penises. This is not a good idea. Qualified proponents of opposing viewpoints are, as always, welcome.
The foregoing statement makes me wonder:
(1) So we should expect accused murderers and violent felons to escape from our local jails from time to time?
(2) Sophisticated operation? Yes. Those 3 certainly look like criminal masterminds. Afterall, one is a dog walker by profession.
(3) The “People in jail have a lot of time to sit around and think about ways to defeat our systems” assertion is particularly creative. All prison wardens take note and enter it into your play books for use upon the next escape. Oh and make sure to take daily counts of your bedsheets to ensure the outgoing = incoming numbers. It would take an awful lot of bedsheets to shimmy down a 4 story building! Bedsheets have been a very valuable commodity to prison inmates since the days of Al Capone. It might be time to consider adding a bedsheet counter to the payroll for each County jail. 🙂
Hmm that most respected law enforcement officer in the land who just endorsed sweet lou the DINO has got a lot of mud on her mug.
*OK Scotty…Beam me up! Oh, that’s what they said!
Shawshank Hutchens….nice job.
John & Ken are convinced the jailbreak was an inside job. And their position is not without logic. How could these 3 guys who are accused of very serious crimes get the tools, the bedsheets, cut through 1/2″ steel bars (w/o the awareness of the jail guards), all go missing from their mods without detection for 16 hours after their escape, and not one surveillance camera capture any of their movements during all this time? Hmmm? I thought Sheriff Hutchens was going to be our new “change agent”, especially after all the jail problems that put Carona under a microscope and eventually indicted? This is just another embarrassment that’s national news. As if we needed another embarrassment after the jailgate informant scandal. Will the Supervisors call her out? Not a chance. She’s their little darling. Expect them to approve millions more of our taxdollars to remodel the jail for a problem that many believe originated with the personnel that Hutchens leads. Prepare for diversions.
*Of course it was an inside job….who smuggeled the three layer cake into these guys with five hacksaw blades? Which guys smuggled all the pliers, channel locks and diagonal cutters they needed to get out? Larry the Cable Guy?
My guess? One of the 3 must have had a money source and probably needed the other 2 goons to increase his own chances for a successful escape. IMO no way could 3 people escape the Central Jail in this manner without some people in key positions turning a blind eye and perhaps even actively assisting the escape. The relevant mod was full of hardened violent criminals and should have been under heightened survelliance and monitoring. And no camera caught anything suspicious? No jailer saw anything suspicious? And this is the post John Chamberlain era when the camera and personnel problems were said to be fixed? 🙂
Something really stinks here. In fact, the stench is overwhelming. Any mature adult who gives a rat’s behind about what sort of society is being handed down to their children and grandchildren should be very worried. Stuff like this should prompt action and participation in the solution which starts by voicing a concern. Those who stand on the sidelines and do or say nothing are all part of the problem, by default. (See Germany 1937-44) Otherwise by our omissions the young people have no chance for decent lives in a free society that our parents bestrowed upon most of us. Wake up call!
Of course Hutchens’ immediate response was not an apology or even an explanation. It was a pitch for more money and a lament that her Department has suffered sooooo much travail during budget time.
A cynic might be caused to ponder the connection.
As usual, you’re hitting on all cognitive cylinders, Mr. Zenger. And you’re honest too.
These guys had to have help from deputies inside the jail. this is impossible to do without help from the deputies.
Honestly, I have no way to assess this. It’s been a long time since my last jailbreak.
I doubt that Paul has any inside information. I assume that he’s using his reasoning abilities via his God-given common sense (I apologize to any offended athiests). But it is the responsibility of those who manage and guard our prisons to keep tools that can cut through 1/2″ steel bars and enough bedsheets shimmy down a 4 story building out of the hands of the inmates. I think we can all agree on that. The facts of this case are very strange. The inmates were gone for at least 12 hours until they were discovered missing. Here it is, Tuesday. Still missing. I assume a couple of them have already fled the country. This is national news. So embarrassing, especially after the jail informant scandal. Time for a new Sheriff. Time for the ‘Change Agent’ to go.
Its simple amigo. Jails are built to keep people inside. the acquiring of cutting tools, no checks on head counts for 12 hours? A fight breaking out that injures a deputy? I would bet $ on that deputy that got injured being the inside help that these guys got.
You don’t have to be a graduate of the Sherlock Holmes School of Investigation to connect some of these dots, eh Paul? It’s not rocket science. Fights in jail break out all the time. Trained jail guards making compensations of $175,000 to $300,000 should know all the tricks of the trade, shouldn’t they? It’s not like the first time a skirmish broke out to cover some other type of wrongdoing (Even if that happened which is doubtful. Maybe a cover story to bait the public).
My question is: Will Hutchens ever take responsibility for anything? Hutchens is the antithesis of what a respected leader is supposed to represent. I know. I’ve met many of them in my lifetime. I know the characteristics of a real leader. Hutchens wouldn’t know leadership if it bit her on her holster.
As far as Im concerned with the revelation of the snitch scandals, The Sheriff is a human and civil rights violating monster right along with T rack and she is of no use to us and never has been as this snitch network was equally as prevalent in LA county Jails as well. It was actually begun in LA county and carried over to OC via both sheriffs departments.
and I assure you, this will haunt lou correa when he touts that endorsement from the sheriff.
Yes, you make a good point. Lou Correa may have to throw the Sheriff under the bus to save his own political hide. Political circles are full of fair-weathered friends.
And in a just world fingerpointing at the LA jail system should not exonnerate the scoundrels in The OC. The phrase “I vas only folloving ordirs” did not work in Nuremberg in 1945 and shouldn’t be allowed to work in The OC in 2016. In a just world, that is.
You guys… I keep telling Paul, there are those of us who care about justice and professionalism, for whom the records of Hutchens, T-Rack, and Lou Correa are a big problem. And then there is the vast majority of OC voters.
I’ll work hard to get Joe (or Bao) in … but y’all are dreaming if you think endorsements from our Sheriff and DA don’t help Lou.
I think the tide is turning and the OC voters are taking note of what’s happening in the OC jail(s), Vern. And most aren’t happy about it. This latest episode is national news on the networks (not just cable). This embarrassment piled on top the jail informant scandal won’t give Hutchen’s endorsement a whole lotta credibility IMO. I think it would take votes away before it would add votes.
John & Ken are in the process of ripping apart the OCSD operations after interviewing the OCSD lieutenant spokeshole yesterday on the air. They reach about 1,000,000 listeners. That include lots of voters in The OC.
Are voters generally stupid? Yes. Are they that stupid? I hope not.
I would be looking at non-sworn jail personnel – possibly having been threatened or family threatened by a gang.
Speaking of Hutchens, do you folks recall the civil lawsuit that the County (Hutchens) was embroiled in with the 5 former Assistant Sheriffs who alleged that Hutchens wrongfully terminated them soon after she came on board as Sheriff? (6 years ago?) As I recall the trial ended last August or September of 2015. It’s a multi-million dollar suit. The plaintiffs are seeking back pay and benefits for many years. The Judge did not make an immediate ruling. He said it would take some time. We were told the ruling would be made public in mid-December or so. Here it is January 26th and still no ruling? Hmmm? Was it buried from the public? Why the delay? A ruling should not take this long. Damage control? Does anyone have an update?
Paul Lucas should be acknowledged for his direct experience in OC jails. Very credible
I’m not proud of why I went to jail, but I really value the experience in hindsight. I learned so much.
And Paul didn’t deserve it. So YOU fuck off.
It’s Harpon, not Harpoon. Not sure why we leave it here.
To show the contemptibility of our trolls.
Did you folks hear that the LAPD cops who shot at the 2 asian female newspaper deliverers in Torrance during the Chris Dorner manhunt were exonnerated by the DA? No charges. Honest mistake. 🙂
How the heck do cops mistake 2 petite asian women for a 300 pound black guy who was reported to be driving a completely different make, model and color car than the car the cops riddled with hundreds of bullets seriously wounding an asian women?
When’s Rod Serling going to make an appearance? Twilight Zone’s got nothing on this story. Who got punished? Who else but the taxpayers? $4.2 million dollars worth of damage and a new car. What a bizarre world!
I wish that it were possible to get better cops by paying them more, but I’m afraid that all one gets is the same cops driving more expensive cars.
Anyway, those guys shouldn’t be cops.
Actually, the more we give them, the worse they seem to get. Thrown in hand-me-down military gear from the War on Terror and carte blanche from DAs and judges and we have a real toxic situation.
Anybody who claims we don’t live in a quasi-police state isn’t hitting on all cylinders. Had that poor woman died of her gunshot wounds there is no reason to believe the trigger happy cops would have been charged. It shouldn’t make any difference whether a man wounds or kills an innocent human being with reckless gunfire – in both instances it should require a face to face meeting with a judge in criminal court. Oh, and it was reckless. Otherwise the City of Los Angeles wouldn’t have paid the women a total of $4.2M and purchased them a new truck with very little litigation. These are the reasons I’m losing faith in my Country. And I’ve been a lifelong believer in America.
I suggest a requirement for a standard of the equivalent of a bachelors degree in a state approved course of study in Police Science.
Yeah. But that’d be the Chiefs and Captains wouldn’t be able to get their kids a job paying over $100,000 with a high school degree.
Yes – and council members as well.
“Get out on the highway…..lookin for adventure in whatever comes our
way….ah, we are goin make in happen…look at life in the lovin way, fire all of our guns at once and explode into space…like a true natures child we were born…born to be wild and we can fly so high………” Oops, this was supposed to be for Medical Marijuana initiative…..on the November Ballot, sorry! This was and could be also another ad for “Politicians without Borders”…..as well.
Press conference in Lil Saigon at 11, with Supes Do and Bartlett giving us the latest on this! OJ will be in the house!
Press Conference = Diversion Conference.
By this time all 5 supes should have condemned Hutchen’s poor performance in our jails. Jailgate informants and now the escapes. The iranian woman arrested is being turned into a scapegoat for the escapes. Please….use your common sense. Put the blame where it rightly belongs!!!
LA Times is reporting that Mr. Duong turned himself in.
http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-oc-manhunt-continues-20160129-story.html
Wow, so co-operative maybe he’ll say where the other guys are.
RE: the update on the “capture”. According to all the reports I’ve heard the escapee was not “captured”. He turned himself in. I wonder if he’ll collect a portion of the reward? He may have a legal case. So please don’t congratulate OCSD for the “capture” unless you think sending a patrol car over to pick him up was noteworthy.
In the meantime Sheriff Hutchens continues to get a pass. The buck stops with her on all this shenanigans. It was her deputies that allowed the inmates to escape. Someone snuck power cutting tools into the jail. Someone gave the inmates dozens of bedsheets. Someone must have turned a blind eye while they escaped (how do you not notice the sound of cutting tools and holes in the walls)? It appears like the authorities are trying to set the iranian woman up as the scapegoat. Did she screw up with the google maps (if true)? Sure. Was she actually responsible for the escapes? A 1 in a 1,000,000,000 chance. The buck stops with OCSD. So don’t take the bait. Use your God-given common sense and have the courage to speak the truth! Silence is complicity!!!
*You keep that kind of talk up and we will never get our Press Credentials back!
Now maybe we’ll get the story of who helped these 3 escape. Very likely not the whole story. Only the part of the story that doesn’t implicate OCSD personnel or operations. Count on it.
*The Tri-fecta is complete.
This whole episode has exposed an ugly side of the U.S. immigration policy and practice. Remember when we all believed the U.S. was a cultural melting pot with all immigrants srirving to embrace the American way of life? Now it seems we have thugs, gang members, home invaders and worse.
Also, why is taxpayer money being spent to try and educate jailhouse residents on how to read, write and speak English? Since when Is that a legit function of our jail system?
Oh yeah Angry taxpayer. After all, most of the Iranian Americans I know and you know are glowering dickchoppers, just as most of the Vietnamese Americans we know are murderous gangbangers. And a vast majority of white folks are either militia gun nuts or shitkicking skinheads just lookin for a churchfull of blacks to shoot at.
NOT.
The gov seemingly tried to deport the illegal viet 5-8 times after he committed some very serious crimes from 1998 on and failed. Unbelieveable. How many other stories have we heard like this? How about the illegal in San Francisco who murdered Kate Steinle – a beautiful vibrant woman who had everything to live for? I think even the pro-amnesty crowd agrees that felons who are illegal in the country need to return to their nations of origin. If not, we’ve really jumped the shark as a society.
Yeah, okay, felons.
Oh, I forgot to tell Angry taxpayer that most Mexican immigrants are also drugged-out random shooters.
Again not.
Yes, I agree with shipping back unauthorized resident violent felons to their countries of origin. That’s been the part of Obama’s policy that I think is most well-founded.
Its going to be interesting to watch the perp walk that an unknown number of deputies will be doing.
Don’t count on it. If anything, expect a cover-up.
Unfortunatley I think you may be right.
There’s a precedent here. Rewind to the jailgate informant scandal. Veteran cops accused by Judge Goethals of either lying on the witness stand or withholding material evidence in criminal cases. Hutchens tells us that all they need is more training. Their refusal to testify on other criminal cases, by invoking the 5th, has resulted in heinous violent felons walking, getting generous plea deals and even be granted new trials after their convictions. The accused lying cops keep their jobs. It’s just a matter of more training. Come on. The writing is all over the wall. Hutchens circles the wagons for her own. Don’t expect any different behavior in this jail escape scandal that’s being publicized in the media coast to coast. Outcome? More training and millions of county taxdollars to remodel a jail to cover up a personnel problem. We really haven’t advanced much after John Chamberlain, have we now? Did the Sheriff use the extra county funds she was handed and the revenue from “Beds for Feds” for new security cameras? Obviously not. But no one in the County will talk about it. Only outsiders like John and ken expose the rot.
I don’t care what fairy tales they come up with to explain this away. There is simply no possible way those guys could have escaped without help from the deputies. Its just not possible.
Hutchens’ press conference. Photo Op for Tony Rackauckas, Spitzer, Do and Steel.(See link below)
From the Riverside newspaper article:
” Some corrections experts this week criticized the Sheriff’s Department for its gap in the number of prisoner body counts. The Central Men’s Jail conducts two body counts, at 5 a.m. and 8 p.m., and three administrative checks throughout the day.
On Friday, the Association of Orange County Deputy Sheriffs joined in the criticism. In a letter addressed to Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens, the union said employees voiced concerns that inmate counts were not being properly conducted, but they received pushback from management.”

In today’s press conference I saw 3 of the 5 county supervisors standing behind the Sheriff as she spoke to the press. I can’t understand why they were there unless there is a feeling that camera face time is politically valuable no matter how awkward it all looks. I saw no value added by their presence and suspect the majority of those who saw it on the TV news have no idea who those people are.
It just reinforced my view of Bartlett as the best Supervisor and Nelson in second place among an otherwise ragged field. Spitzer’s in third; he beats out Steel and Do because at least he’s erratic.
Bartlett’s the best supervisor? That ain’t sayin’ a whole lot. The best in a field of lame nags is still a nag. By the time she’s through chairing the board I suspect you’ll reassess your ratings. Give her a chance to prove her worthlessness. You haven’t seen her in action. Out of the pack I’d be surprised to see her finish 4th. If they were horses at Santa Anita it would be a Maiden Race just before a trip to the glue factory.
I was ranking them, not rating them. If you check out the archives, I was also optimistic about her before the election against Ming.
I’m sorry, but “The Persian Dickchopper” would be a great nickname for a pro wrestler.
*Not exactly Brusier Kumo or Lord Blears, or Agentina Rocca or……Midnight Cowboy…. The truth be told……..we have had open borders since they passed NAFTA. circa Bush the Elder and Bill Clinton. Before that, we had a annual reporting system. Aliens had to report to the Immigration Dept. their where-a-bouts every December 31st. If they didn’t – they got deported. When California Agriculture went Global during the Clinton years……the last remnants of “the bracero program” disappeared. In those days, farmers had to account for all their immigrant workers. Watch a Route 66 episode and you can see how it all worked. Once the farmers put up any alien…and were not accountable for their welfare……the DDT and Methyl Bromide fumigations occurred on a regular basis when they ran into trouble makers. They didn’t come back the following year or any year….cancer and gone! Once quality crops like our almonds, oranges and high dollar exotic crops started bringing big money on the open global market…….well…..we started getting the old human waste treated tomatoes from Ecuador – today of course they are GMO human waste treated tomatoes. But affordable…even though they have no taste at all. Remember when Lettuce and Tomatoes had actual flavor? Well, our open borders now have to be patrolled by our Prison System. They allow these folks in….and when they break the law…..we have probable cause. Pretty easy really. Hard to blame Obama or Sheriff Hutchins for any of that.
I understand that they arrested a man suspected of smuggling in the cutting tools to the escapees at the jail. Did he smuggle in the bedsheets too? Where did he hide it all? In his anal cavity? Don’t they search visitors or at least make them walk through a magnetometer when entering the jail? Who’s to blame for that? Webster Guillory?
