California Water Board release shows who is thrifty with water — and who is hogging it.
The California Water Board has released its latest report show water usage and change in usage for all the water districts in California.
The key measure is Residential Gallons Per Capita Day (R-GPCD) . By this measure, Fountain Valley, Santa Ana, and Irvine are camels, while Tustin, Yorba Linda, and Trabuco Canyon are water hogs.
The “change” isn’t change in total usage, but change in amount drawn from sources measured by the water board. For example, Fountain Valley uses ground water, but is having to draw less less from the wells to guard against the ocean contaminating the aquifer with salt water.
To put these numbers in perspective, a 25% reduction in usage, which roughly corresponds to halving the amount of water we use for landscaping and not doing anything else, would exceed peak claimed production for the billion dollar Poseidon Adventure.
Which sounds like a better plan to you?
*The City of Newport Beach has 90 thousand souls. This must mean that eveything
except the Newport Coast is worth 65K….but that leaves 25K for Newport Coast and
other places.
Newport Coast is served by IRWD, as befits developments erected on Irvine Ranch land.
Even when cities operate their own water agencies, they boundaries of service typically differ from the municipal boundaries.
Poseidon by far. it will be built soon. a local, reliable, and drought proof source of gushing torrents of fresh, pure water. then a larger desal in camp Pendleton. we will be much better of with the desalination plants. the article above is very poorly written btw.
It’s not local. It’s a company based in Connecticut.
It’s not reliable. Desal plants have a poor track record of availability and the proposed contract provides no disincentive for the company to ensure it has a running plant. When it’s down, it’s down. Better get used to not taking a shower for eight weeks while they do maintenance.
It’s no more drought proof than water recycling. It’s less drought proof than permanent conservation.
Stop lying about Poseidon. It’s a shit project any way you slice it.
I think I liked you better when you were deadwhitemale.
Nice how you don’t list the key attribute of the Poseidon Adventure: expensive.
Santa Barbara spent heavily on desal back in the 90s. After three months, they mothballed the plant.
Three months.
Desal is hideously expensive. You’re basically drinking coal.
“the article above is very poorly written btw.”
but at least it’s factual.
What I remember from I think this same study was that Villa Park, and some small rich community in the south, were the biggest water wasters.
My bon mot was that Villa Park was probably mostly Debra Pauley aiming a fire hose at her Muslim neighbors.
the “hogs” at water per capita most likely use less water per acre than others. very incomplete list in article. since it is the oj blog why not list the 19 pumpers from the oc basin?
*The Anti-Desals are funny. They have no qualms about asking the rate payers at the pump from the OCWD or IRWD to pay three or four times what we are paying now….because that is “their Ox to gore”. Adding supplying, even if that
meant “cloud seeding” or find a good “Diviner” with a hot willow in hand to give us more water in the state of california….would be lovely. Without Desal, your good buddies in Real Estate and your Developer buddies are all going to “dry up”, because they cannot develop new Baby Power Stations for their “off the books – real estate deals”. They will build high rise where folks can’t flush their toilets except between 7am to 7pm at night. Welcome to Nazi Germany in 1932.
“All we are saying is give brine a chance!”
Nazi Germany?
And the award for most nonsensical comparison of 2015 goes to . . .
” why not list the 19 pumpers from the oc basin?”
I’d love to. Where do I find information?
Thanks.
*All you guys better get your Diviner Rods and head down to the Irvine City Council and make a bundle selling the NEW Great Porker people on your plan.
