Larry Agran supporters are stealing election signs. Again.
Every election season brings charges of sign-stealing. What sets Irvine apart is that we’re more organized about it.
Last Friday, hundreds of the above signs were placed on Irvine thoroughfares announcing a site consisting entirely of quotes from sworn depositions. Sunday night, most of the signs were gone. I have confirmed reports of removals from most of Woodbridge, much of Culver drive, and Turtle Rock.
There is nothing new about this. In 2006, I chatted with a crew of city contractors doing this. They claimed were on a city clean up contract. Oddly, they wouldn’t give me the name of the person who authorized them, nor could I find anyone at City Hall who had any idea about such a contract. Stephen Smith of the erstwhile Irvine Tattler suffered this treatment as well.
Select sign vandalism is such a normal part of campaigning against Larry Agran that no one puts all of their signs up initially. Indeed, Monday small clusters of these signs re-appeared at key intersections such as Alton and East Yale Loop. This morning the signs at Barrance and East Yale loop are gone, again. So it goes.
But enough about my town. Please share any good sign-stealing stories from your town.
“Please share any good sign-stealing stories from your town.”
The funnest one I remember was in Fullerton where Roland Chi’s father was busted in broad daylight.

I was tempted to steal one of those Bad Chi signs myself. Wish I had.
Instant classic.
Not my town, but I just LOVE the explanation offered in-

“Nick said Friday he had taken Voigts’ signs to move them to a better location, though he had not asked his permission to do so.”
Yeah, the alley where that dumpster is, is actually a high-traffic location with good visibility! lol.
I don’t remember how many tan nguyen signs I took but im guessing it might have been a few hundred. the first time I took those signs was on a sunday morning I went out and saw the whole main drag of where I live littered with “stop illegal immigration” signs I thought the minutemen had come by so me and my friend alberto (an undocumented dude) went out and tore them all down.
it wasn’t until a few days later that I saw the small print that said paid for by tan nguyen for congress then I realized he was the swine who had all the ugly green tan signs around. well it was at this time I was awaiting knee surgery so I had all kinds of time on my hands and everytime I went out I would always grab 10 signs that was my quota.
and keep in mind this was just before his letter went out and when all hell broke loose I started pulling more out. I did this all in broad daylight I didn’t give a shit who saw me but my favorite place to get signs was at the lees sandwiches on the corner of bolsa and moran st. I would pull in go out to the grass area and pull all the tan signs and throw them in the back of my truck walk inside and order a sandwich. people sitting in the outdoor area would usually stop talking and just stared at me as I walked in nobody ever said anything to me and really what the hell were they going to say? I mean the man was a commie swine.
every Thursday my recycling trash can went out full of his signs and I always used a utility knife to cut the signs down the middle so I could get more in my trash can. its a good thing I cut them up I mean those bat shit crazy tea party/minutemen people might have gotten their hands on them. I still don’t understand why they use his signs maybe theyre just so blind with hatred to realize those signs were bought and paid for by a communist.
anyway, when I wasn’t ripping his signs out I was defacing the big ones with his picture on them for which he blamed and threatened our friend mike Lawson who had nothing to do with that other than reporting it. but ive never ripped out signs before or after that and I must say it was actually a lot of fun and I was keeping the area free of eyesores for all of us plus the wood part of the signs were great kindling for my fires and for propping up my tomatos that I grow every year as a matter of fact I still use them.
tan nguyen helps my tomatos grow every year. thank you tan. I hope your time in prison was tough.
OK, here’s my confession. I altered Yes on Prop 8 signs to make them say no, back in 2008. I did it to dozens maybe a hundred. I justified it because the whole thing was so hateful and intolerant, and I resented so much out-of-state Mormon money funding it, and plus Cunningham and his wife were behind it, and plus it was intended as a way to get intolerant Republicans out to the polls (that didn’t work so much.)
Their Yes on 8 signs had a cute little stick-figure family on it – no problem with that – they said Yes on 8, and they were bright goldenrod color. I made a whole shitload of bright goldenrod “NO”s and the O in NO was a happy face 🙂 (that’s another way I justified it!) And then I bought a can of spray-wallpaper-glue, and went to town! I got yelled at a couple times by angry Christian women in pickup trucks telling me I was breaking the law.
Isn’t that a trip though, to think that a mere SIX YEARS AGO, so many Republicans, conservatives, and “Christians” were SO FREAKED OUT about gays marrying? I hope they’re a little ashamed of themselves now.
they aren’t ashamed theyre more frightened than ever and that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. but good for you vern.
Loved your story too. (I even added paragraph breaks to it.) Let me know if you have any extra Tanatos.
