Our commenter BigBoxOfRedWhine found this video from the famed Second City comedy factory online and … well, it’s funny. Anti-Obama, but funny. So what the hell, here we go with it. If civilization ends as a result of our republishing it here and thus undermining Obama’s Presidency, then I deeply apologize.
In other news: Not only is today Friday the 13th, but tonight at sunset begins the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, through Saturday at sundown. Technically, this is only supposed to be an obligation for Jews, but based on your posts, some others of you might want to give it a whirl this year. Seriously. While you’re thinking that over, here is a picture (from the video) of a woman imitating a cat.
And finally, the legislature ended its session last night and is sending a whole bunch of new bills to the Governor. This includes Sharon Quirk-Silva’s VLFAA plan, AB701, which passed the Assembly by a vote of 76-0 and will remove a good number of Orange County’s chestnuts from the fire. Other bills include:
- AB 60, a bill that will allow many more persons residing in the state without legal authorization to obtain California driver’s licenses, which Gov. Jerry Brown says he will sign. The licenses will be marked to indicate that they provide only driving privileges and nothing more.
- AB 1024, which will allow DREAM Act student Sergio Garcia to seek a license to practice law.
- AB 10, raising the minimum wage to $9 pn July 1, 2014 and $10 on January 1, 2016. This was a party-line vote, 26-11 in the State Senate. Attitude towards the minimum wage continues to be one of the starkest and most consistent ways of distinguishing between the two major parties.
- AB 1159, which will bar attorneys and others from charging people for services related to proposed changes in federal immigration laws — before such changes have occurred.
- AB 241, the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights, would will give personal attendants require time-and-a-half pay when they put in more than nine hours in a day or 45 hours in a week.
- SB 374, requiring current owners of “assault weapons” without fixed magazines to register them by July 1, 2014.
- A bill criminalizing “revenge porn.” Next time your relationship breaks up, you will be committing a misdemeanor if you humiliate someone by posting pictures (or, I’m guessing, video) of a sexual nature featuring them onto the Internet without their consent. So stop doing that.
Got all that down? Good! This is your Weekend Open Thread. Talk about this or anything else that strikes you as interesting, within reasonable bounds of decency and decorum.
“AB 1024, which will allow DREAM Act student Sergio Garcia to seek a license to practice law.”
He gave up golf?
What’s the matter — is it untrue?
If this works, then we can make gun ownership and use legal by felons.
I do understand that if you make the crime legal, then the reported crimes would drop, even tho consequences would go up.
No one is being “made legal” — by which I presume you mean something like “adjusted to authorized status” — by this action. People who are already driving will be able to drive legally and — and this is the direct benefit for people like me and you, with whom they might collide — purchase auto insurance, for which one needs a license for coverage to be in effect.
*Yep, Downtown Jerry Brown….wants those folks to pay car insurance like the rest of us. Great move!
Rep. Dana Rohrabacher recounts the first time he succumbed to Vladimir Putin without a struggle.
http://livewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/entry/gop-rep-arm-wrestled-putin-he-put-me
Would be nice if he also recounted the time he succumbed to the charms of the Taliban.
“Sharon Quirk-Silva’s VLFAA plan, AB701, .. passed the Assembly by a vote of 76-0”
76 to zip – pretty good – sounds like they could have put any old Tom, Dick, Harry or Sharon’s name on the bill …..
That’s one theory.
Since family obligations now require me to frequently fly out of California airports, I’m just wondering if AB 60 “licenses will be marked to indicate that they provide only driving privileges and nothing more” defines any status with TSA for flying, which I was always puzzled about when the point was brought up, or is another court test in the offing? That I could find, the text allows “an affadavit signed under penalty of perjury” for proof- what about that would stop anyone caring only about the planes takeoff and not the landing? Anyone? Buehler?
The Wikipedia entry for “REAL-ID Act” Mentions issuance of licenses marked “Not for Federal ID”. I don’t see that text in AB 60. Is the IMPLIED equivalence enough?
That may be why these are styled as “driver’s permits” rather than “drivers’ licenses.”
I doubt that Obama will take this to court. Maybe Boehner will try — with our tax money — again.
U.S. Debt Clock … http://www.usdebtclock.org/
Since we’ve been giving Dan well-deserved grief of late, I’ll note that sometimes he gets it right, as here: http://www.theliberaloc.com/2013/09/13/get-well-chris/
Most Nobel Peace Prize winners make peace – then get the award. It must be tough to get the award for no particular reason and then start droning and bombing.
I guess it would only be tough if you took the award seriously in the first place.
I hear there is a move afoot to petition Obama to hand over his award to Putin.
Except the award was not for droning and bombing. Just like OJ’s Heisman was not for killing two people.
Or were you talking of Henry Kissinger? Arafat maybe?
Yeah, like write about it four years after he got it.
OK, I get his SuperBowl ring.
Please remind me again what Obama got it for (in his first year in office). The droning and bombing has been going on ever since – has it really been 4 years? Guess so. Lots of dead civilians, but you know…
Kissinger should not have got it, or Arafat, either, so Obama’s in proper company.
I can’t tell if you’re defending Obama or the Nobel Selection Committee.
As I remember he was kind of shocked and embarrassed to get it. He certainly wasn’t entering office as a pacifist, nor pretending to.
All indications were that the Committee was simply celebrating the world’s greatest superpower no longer being led by Cheney, Bush, and the neocons. Hardly anybody agreed that that was a good enough reason for the award. Barack was the first to insist that there were many others more deserving.
And yet Neocon & Co. still seems to be dictating foreign policy.
Actually, with the exception of the worst dictators, Nobel laureates have probably had a hand in more violence than anybody else.
He got the award for being a new U.S. President who wasn’t Bush. He still deserves a good portion of it in that respect, though definitely not all.
As many across the spectrum noted at the time, the award was not really justified at the time. If they had wanted to make a point, they should have given a second one to Jimmy Carter.
Just when I think I’ve heard it all, I read this… http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-blind-carry-guns-in-public-20130911,0,1495884.story
Why don’t I think blind people should carry guns?
Well, I can think of at least one reason.
They can’t see!
If Iowa thinks blind people should carry guns, then they should be able to drive as well.
And in related news, a 3-year old accidentally shoots a 2-year old in South Carolina!
http://livewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/entry/2-year-old-shoots-3-year-old-through?ref=fpblg
The 2 year-old should have been armed. See what happens?
Right you are, Marconi Darwin – the only thing that can protect us from a bad three-year-old with a gun is a good two-year-old with a gun.
Inge,
One of my favorite comments from your linked story;

“Im Dong-Hyun is legally blind in one eye, and 20/100 in the other. He is also an Olympic archer, winning 12 gold medals at the Olympics and other games, and was at one time ranked number one in the world.
If you’re going to start stripping people of their rights because of physical disabilities you probably don’t completely understand, don’t forget to stop by Gabby Gifford’s house and pick up her pistols.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Im_Dong-Hyun
I have known two individuals that were legally blind and couldn’t and wouldn’t drive, but could put all their rounds into the 9 & 10 rings on a target at 30 feet with any handgun you could give them.
And as if to prove my point about the minimum wage, my old opponent Bob Huff stands in the well of the legislative chamber and cries crocodile tears for the unemployed:
If he cares so deeply about unemployment, he should have told his friends Ed Royce, Gary Miller, and the rest of the local brood not to do everything they possibly could to keep Congress from passing job stimulus legislation in the vain hope that the economy would be bad enough to let Mitt Romney win.
Greg,
You have already stated that you thought his motivation was/is disingenuous but can you point out anything he said in that statement that is factually incorrect?
Yeah: raising the minimum wage boosts the economy because people who have to spend (rather than hoard) their income buy stuff with the extra money.
Most of his assertions are opinion, not of fact. But I did want to let him have his say as a matter of fairness.
At -large elections system is being challenged now in Whittier:
“Years of racism, manifested in part by polarized voting, have undercut minorities’ opportunities to be elected or to choose a candidate they feel can best represent them, said Rod Pacheco, a former Republican state assemblyman and Riverside County district attorney.”

Yes Greg, “help us put the Liberal back into Neo-Liberal.”
Hahh Hahhhh Hah, that is what your video said.
As I said, I was presenting an opposing viewpoint. Hahh hahhhh hah yourself. If you want to debate whether people like Samantha Power are neo-liberals: anytime!
I am terribly disappointed – trying to find something on my Twitter feed to piss off liberals here – nothing. Twitter doesn’t usually let me down like this.
Calculate Obamacare costs for hypothetical people. Maybe you’ll find something upsetting.
This should do the trick ………….

Yeah, Obama will have been instrumental in getting chemical weapons out of Syria. Some spanking.
Thanks to the Rooskies.
Really. You really think this would be happening if it weren’t for Barack’s apparent determination to avenge the sarin attack. (Which my brother is convinced has been a masterful bluff.)
All I know is Putin pulled our feckless president’s chestnuts out of the fire after he over-committed. Maybe your brother should be Secretary of State.
No, you don’t know that. I’ll be writing about this tomorrow, but in the meantime you should check out this article:
http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/war_stories/2013/09/the_u_s_russian_chemical_weapons_deal_is_a_win_win_win_for_everyone_except.html
Obama was played by a grandstanding KGB goon. Watching Kerry snuggle up to his Russian counterpart was sad.
But I stick by my assertion: Vern’s brother should be Secretary of State.
Didn’t read the article, did you?

Summers comes to and end! Summers withdraws name for Fed position! Hoorah!
Remind me …. why don’t we like Summers for the Fed?
Look it up yourself.
Summers antagonized high-spending enemies on the left by opposing any proposal for a stimulus package of more than a trillion dollars.
Summers was an advocate of looser regulations for his buddies on Wall Street. Policies that, at least in part, contributed to the financial crisis of 2008. Why Obama ever brought him into the administration in the first place is beyond me.
Article about the Birmingham church bombing of September 15, 1963, that killed four children. A moving story about the civil rights struggle.
