Since our dear Moorlach, following his own sasquatch code, doesn’t mind reprinting others’ lengthy articles in their entirety, I will share with you what just came “across my transom” in the latest Moorlach Update – how do you like this? John talking now:
“What are you doing next?” This is the most often asked question that I hear. It is usually followed by, “We would love to see you stay involved in an elected position.” It seemed that extending Supervisorial term limits from two terms to three made the most sense. Unfortunately, three of my Board colleagues did not agree. As no Republican of personal financial significance has shown an interest in running for Governor, which has been the trend, I examined that opportunity at length and recently decided against it. I still had not made up my mind as to what I was doing next, up until June 27th when my friend and fellow C.P.A., John Campbell, announced that he would not be rerunning for Congress in 2014. My supervisorial district overlapped Congressman Campbell’s before redistricting, and we conferred often on John Wayne Airport matters. This upcoming vacancy has kept me hopping these past few days, which is usually a summer break spent catching up at home. I have served eighteen years at the accountancy firm of Balser, Horowitz, Frank & Wakeling, the last ten years as a partner/owner. I then served nearly twelve years as your County Treasurer-Tax Collector, and will have served eight years as the County Supervisor for the Second District.
Running for public office is an interview process where the majority of the voters decide the winning applicant. I will be applying for the 45th Congressional District. The filing period opens next spring, the Primary is in June, and the General is in November. There are other great applicants that are also considering a run next year and I wish them all the best. I know it will be fun when an esteemed political consultant takes a swipe at me in the OC Register’s update on all of the initial movement since Congressman Campbell’s announcement, which is the first piece below. As the campaign has not officially started, this piece is being provided only for informational purposes. Once campaign season officially opens next spring, I will embargo articles of this nature.
[Oh – so the Register has already broken this story. But … who would know that? The Wisckoll story also mentions Stephen Choi, Mimi Walters, and some Marine colonel. The Moorlach goes on about other matters….]
The OC Register also covers yesterday’s Orange County Transportation Authority Board vote on the Anaheim streetcar proposal (see MOORLACH UPDATE — Begets a New Vote — June 25, 2012) in the second piece below. I fully support a transit system that provides connectivity between the Disney resort, the Honda Center and the Convention Center. I just do not believe it should be fixed rail. There is no empirical study that proves that ridership is higher on a streetcar. Streetcars are inflexible. If one breaks down, it will hold up the entire system. When a train arrives, having multiple buses available to move tourists to the resort area is much more efficient. Having the buses available for other occasional venues, or adaptable to changes in route demands, makes more sense to me. Adding streetcars will require construction to imbed the tracks, and that will increase congestion in an already busy corridor. And, the cost differential makes an enhanced bus system all the more appealing from a taxpayer standpoint.
[The Moorlach should have linked to our own Cynthia Ward’s masterpiece on this topic, “Disney Streetcar Throws Taxpayers Under the Bus!“]
The Voice of OC also covers the streetcar topic in the third piece below. Supporting a concept because it will improve property values is not a compelling reason to vote for a streetcar system, as values around this pristine resort area will appreciate on their own. And, I’m not one that feels it’s justifiable to spend tax dollars just because the money is there. Instead of spending more money on a report solely focused on streetcars, I voted against the motion yesterday. Why wait to vote against it later while expending more resources in the meantime?
Who is ADMIN? A ghost writer?
Admin, as on most blogs, is the administrator; and I use that when I put up some writing that’s mostly taken from somewhere else. Sometimes Greg will post as “admin.”

*Mimi Walters – No Issues Page
Her website still reads:
“Mimi Walters”
“United States Representative”

Strategy:
Wait until the Immigration “Reform” bills pass or fail and then comment.
(Same strategy for Supervisor Moorlach)
How can Spitzer be passing this one up? COME ON, TODD, WHERE ARE YOU?
I dunno, Todd has really had his sights fondly set on DA for a long time. He’s still young…
If he doesn’t care about getting into Congress for a couple of decades, until this safe seat is vacant again, then that’s a good choice.
Ed Royce, in whose district I think Todd lives, should be gone before a couple of decades.
Royce only has a sliver of eastern Anaheim (not even the Hills, as I recall, but maybe somewhere around Esperanza.) Where does Spitzer live?
Orange. The hills toward the east of Orange. Almost Tustin.
So does that really put him in Campbell’s district?
Either Campbell’s or … Loretta’s!
ed royce will live forever…….
*First off…..has anyone ever seen Ed Royce Sr.? This guy looks 55…..and must be nearly 95. He still sits on Water Boards, County Commissions and is very spry! Think about it….Ed Royce….has “dug in like a Louisiana tick!” and we doubt he will ever leave the Congress of the United States. He might be here “After Global Warming” is just a fond memory.
Pappa John Moorlach, loves the lay down. “He walks into a room…like he was walking into a yard…..he’s so vain he probably thinks this blog is about him…..he’s so vain…..”
At any rate, there is little doubt……he is a “Walk-in” at this point to take Campbell’s seat. The smart money is on him…….and he may wind up being the Republican Al Franken! Better than you thought ……get it?
Anyway, we do hope John and Trina can find cool new digs somewhere located in his new district. We hope he can show leadership on financial issues and maybe even join forces with Senator Elizabeth Warren – so his Committee assignments will be immediately productive!
So, what about Dana and Rhonda? Heck, they will probably be sticking around quite a while longer too! Guess we could call all three of our guys: “The Good, The Bad and the Ugly!” No preference by the way…..just a collegial and jockular acceptance of their longevity to come!
*Of course we know Warren is a Senator……”but do you believe in miracles?”
A Freshman Congressman actually talking with other parties Senators….in a spirit of bi-partisanship….on the issues at hand? Hey, maybe Congresspeople and Senators are like “skins and shirts” and never talk to each other…..yeah!
Mr. Moolach has in the past bragged that he could be making more in the private sector than in the public sector, yet he seems addicted to public office. He appears to be the typical term-limited elected who, in his or her last term, is lunging at most any other elected spot that comes up. In the last year he has explored running for Governor, was reported to be a likely candidate for the elected County-Auditor Controller position, and now it seems is eyeing this forthcoming Congressional opening.
His reputation is of a far right, anti-union, anti-abortion, anti-Obamacare conservative who has championed losing causes like a loyal far right kind of guy. Even when that has cost county taxpayers millions in legal fees and settlements in pursuit of a losing cause that the OC conservative community, namely the Lincoln Club, has wanted pursued. In that regard he has demonstrated he is a loyal soldier to the power brokers in this County and now we shall see if that loyalty results in a successful bid for Congress.
That is, unless some other elected office opens up that tempts John or the power brokers feel he has served their purpose and they move on. Politics is a brutal game – most anything can happen.
*Ego drives the Campaign. Without a strong ego……..folks crumble under the pressure of the campaign issues and the so-called opponents. Pappa John has never been faulted for NOT having a very strong ego. His faint at the Governorship…..was just a weather balloon to check winds aloft. His other faint at statewide office merely confirmed his own knowledge that party affiliation lends about 22% advantage if you are Democrat. Republican….you start off down 22% unless the opponent has been seriously flawed and skewered. Run to the base……and make the opponent either over achieve or fall flat without financial support. This is called running in a Gerrymandered District which requires you make several strategic errors in order to fail.
