This is great. You’ve probably seen it by now, but when the alien life forms unearth and decode the Orange Juice Blog archive, we want to make sure that they see it too.
That’s Commander Chris Hadfield of the International Space Station, releasing a music video to mark the day of his return home. Some of the best stuff is near the end, so stay in your seat until the landing. And, please, don’t try this at home!
International Space Station Commander Chris Hadfield picks up his guitar and prepares to leave the building.
This is your Weekend Open Thread. Talk about this, or anything else you’d like, within reasonable bounds of taste and decorum.
About Greg Diamond
Somewhat verbose attorney, semi-disabled and semi-retired, residing in northwest Brea. Occasionally ran for office against jerks who otherwise would have gonr unopposed. Got 45% of the vote against Bob Huff for State Senate in 2012; Josh Newman then won the seat in 2016. In 2014 became the first attorney to challenge OCDA Tony Rackauckas since 2002; Todd Spitzer then won that seat in 2018. Every time he's run against some rotten incumbent, the *next* person to challenge them wins! He's OK with that.
Corrupt party hacks hate him. He's OK with that too.
He does advise some local campaigns informally and (so far) without compensation. (If that last bit changes, he will declare the interest.)
His daughter is a professional campaign treasurer. He doesn't usually know whom she and her firm represent. Whether they do so never influences his endorsements or coverage. (He does have his own strong opinions.) But when he does check campaign finance forms, he is often happily surprised to learn that good candidates he respects often DO hire her firm. (Maybe bad ones are scared off by his relationship with her, but they needn't be.)
There are a few people I would like to send in to space and 2 live in my complex. I live in a condo complex in Anaheim and there are several dumpsters — none of them are specifically for recyclables. Almost daily a few different men show up late mornings and go through them looking for cans. They never bother anyone and do not leave a mess. Yes, we have signs that say no scavenging, dumping, trespassing and they even have the code numbers listed in big red letters.
Well, so what! We have a new neighbor that has appointed herself the complex sheriff and she loves to call the city code enforcement on these men. Today, I blew my stack. I am sick and tired of certain people like this busy-body broad bullying people who cannot defend themselves. She should think herself lucky that she doesn’t have to collect cans for a living.
The officer told me that Anaheim City Council is part of the decision making team who comes up with these dumbass laws. Oh really? Is that the same city council who f**ks over it’s constituents on a daily basis? Is this the same group who is giving away the Garden Walk? Is this the same city council who refuse to budge on re-districting?
Frankly, I don’t give a rats ass who comes up with these petty laws…they need to concentrate on fining and supervising themselves and big business, instead of screwing the “little guy”.
Yes, I am in a constant internal struggle with the can collectors. On one hand the are mostly good intentioned people, often with families, looking to get some money. Good for them in finding something of worth and working hard to gain a little bit. I am weighing that with the constant threat of those who roam the neighborhood collecting cans and also either looking for a break in or an easy pick off from an unlocked car. From what our local police have told us, the ones who are the burglar types, often will work in teams (one in the cans as a lookout, the other in the home/car).
these men work separately and come on different days. I know there are those who steal, but these men work don’t have an agenda. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt. The way our economy is, any one of us –especially those of us over the age of 50 — could be in their shoes someday. No one is indispensable these days. Its no longer about bringing experience to the workplace, its about who will work the most amount of hours for the least amount of money.
Have you brought cans to the recycle center lately? You are lucky to walk with $10.
I also like to give them the benefit of the doubt…when there are reports of thefts from those who seem to be can collectors, that can change things though. A few bad can collectors can ruin it for the rest of them.
I have brought in cans to the collection centers lately…much less than $10 b/c we don’t drink that much canned soda or other bottled water as it is wasteful. Although, the kids certainly love collecting them and then keeping the few bucks that they get. I am grateful that I do not depend on that as a source of family income to pay the bills.
Yes, any of us could certainly could lose our source of income…In my line of business, I will take an experienced person who can communicate well, knows how business works, and has a desire to move up compared to someone who is willing to plow a boat load of hours even if they work cheaply. In the end, it is better for the customer and the owners.

Boutwell,
Are you hiring? I don’t know what line of work you are in, but I know many *over the hill* people who want to work.
This is probably a good moment to remind readers that we are not actually rooting for the demise of the OC Register as an online resource since the imposition of its paywall; we’re just tracking the inevitable because we think that it might be of public interest. And, we’re also keeping track of what sorts of online publications seem to be picking up the Orange Lady’s readers.
This was a bad week for our sibling mainstream print publications, with the major exceptions being the coastal Pilot, Independent, and (to a lesser extent) Press-Telegram. My bet is that the the Register staff checks its figures, they will find a lower adoption rate along the coast than inland. I don’t know why that is. OC Weekly had another good week, after a bit of a lapse last week.
The big story still continues to be how Voice of OC is tearing up the charts: from a rank of 525,000 to one of 384,000 in a month and a half. That’s an amazing rise. (Of course, it seems that they’ve added to their staff, or given them steroids, or something, because all by themselves they’re giving us the equivalent of a “real” local investigative bureau. I remember things like this from my distant past.) I’d hand second place to the Huntington Beach Independent, which has blown right by us with room to spare, despite our decent showing. (Wonder if the fire rings story has legs? Maybe there’s your answer.)
We, like Liberal OC and OC Political, are not doing too shabbily ourselves overall. It’s looking like the pattern is solidifying: the Register’s loss of online readers is the gain of OC’s smaller local print papers (such as the Weekly and Independent) and the political online venues, lead by Voice of OC. I have a feeling that, if I looked back to early April, I’d find that I had predicted something like this.
*We’re so sorry…..Uncle Albert….but we haven’t done a bloody thing all day…..We’re so sorry Uncle Albert…………..hands across the water….water…hands across the sky!”

Inge, CPA firm…
I think there were trash scavengers in Benghazi.
Are these trash scavengers conservatives? If so, sic the IRS on them.
Do the trash scavengers work for the AP? If so, have Holder look at their phone records.
Skally, playing the part of David Lynch’s “Angriest Dog In the World.”

*If you worked in the Borax mines, did you have to add soap when you did your laundry?
*Is this the Virgin Atlantic plane we missed? Richard Branson…..that joker…..he loves leaving folks at the gate…without a back-up flight.

We would have like that one better…
At least grandpa and grandma are still getting *some-action* at the old folk’s home…
