It SHOULD be a natural fit – and the fact that it totally isn’t is a testament to the corrosive power of the almighty dollar in our political system.
Oh, I’m talking about the natural fit that SHOULD exist between the Democratic Party – supposedly the party of the people, especially since it embraced Civil Rights and “lost the South for a generation” back in the 60s – and this new “Occupy” movement which began last month with Occupy Wall Street, has spread like wildfire, and advocates clearly for the rights of the lower 99% of us against the privileges of the top 1%.
Shall we count, here, the ways the Democratic Party has let the people down over the decades? That would really take too long. Let’s just say the Party has been schizophrenic, including as it does the most bold and progressive politicians the nation has, side by side with Wall Street hacks, corporate lackeys and warmongers. And maybe it’s true in the current climate that if President Obama wasn’t getting Wall Street and Big Pharma cash we would have ended up with a McCain-Palin Presidency and two more Scalia clones on the Supreme Court.
Dylan Ratigan, in his “Get Money Out” campaign, tells us that “94% of the time the candidate that raises the most money wins.” This just has to change, and right now the only way is for all us citizens to stay informed, focused, involved, and on the politicians like white on rice – only THAT can neutralize the power of big money at this point. I like to tell the story of FDR when some progressive thinkers went and told him about their great ideas for a “New Deal.” “I love it, gentlemen,” responded the President, “Now GET OUT THERE AND FORCE ME TO DO IT!” That’s what WE need to do for Obama and the Democrats.
To be clear – This is Not An Official “Occupy Orange County” Event!
The folks who are running Occupy Orange County are not officially behind this; some of them may be involved, but they are adamant about keeping politics and Parties out of the movement, and I agree with them. I do not want to see the Democratic Party co-opting this movement the way the Republicans took over the Tea Party. Granted it would sure be great for a progressive grassroots movement to have the clout with the Dems that the Teabaggers wield, but not at the cost of taking orders and losing our focus.
No, this is not an Occupy Orange County idea, this is a Vern Nelson idea, and I hope at least a couple dozen of my friends from DFA, PDA, and any other like-minded frustrated Democrats will show up tonight (Tuesday, October 11, 5:30-7 pm) at the annual DPOC fundraiser known as the Truman Dinner, which will be featuring Governor Brown as keynote speaker.
Please bring signs CHALLENGING the Party to stand up for its professed ideals and us 99%. E-mail me at ChezVern@aol.com to help co-ordinate. We can discuss sign ideas here or by e-mail. There will be media talking to us. There will be Republican and Teabagger protesters yelling the usual nonsense at Dem attendees – communists, traitors, etc. – we need to make it clear we’re not with them. Let’s roll…
For your video enjoyment – Once and future Dem Congressman Alan Grayson
schools dried-up husk of his old funny conservative self PJ O’Rourke
on what the message of the protesters is:
– As he admits, “One Party is a wholly owned subsidiary of Wall Street, and the other Party caters to them as well.” What I’m talking about.
I’ll go Vern. Have you conulted with anyone about the legalities. Irvine Police are supposed to be really bored D*** heads. I am taking your lead on this one.
di,
It would boost ratings for the OJB if we would have another bloody face of a mentally sick bloger in front of us.
Camarillo, you’re hallucinating again. Just keep moving towards the light.
Would it be madness for me to protest an event that I’m helping put on? Of course.
But is challenging the Democratic Party to stand up for its professed ideals and us 99% really a “protest”? Of course not. It’s helping the party — and those who protest economic inequities and iniquities.
I’m in. See you there. I’ll be the one in the suit.
I will also be wearing a suit. I’m tired of this movement being caricatured.
“I will also be wearing a suit.”…. Hmmmmm
Lumpenproletariat in a suit?……. that is caricatured.
Camarillo, I don’t think you’d know the lumpenproletariat if it bit you in the ass, but I’d be delighted to see that belief tested.
“I don’t think you’d know the lumpenproletariat if it bit you in the ass”…. Hmmmmm
So who is this?…… Idiot? or both.

Not only do I not understand your question, but you seem not to understand your question.
Just out of curiousity, is it your take that the 1% “stealing” your country are all Republicans? The irony is that Hollywood, heads of the Democratic Party and many other solidly Democratic Party folks make up a substantial part of that 1% that you claim is destroying the country.
Are you talking about people that are fighting for more justice and equality? Good on them.
Who ever said all the rich were Republicans? That would be a dumb thing to say. I have no idea what Party they’re in.
If you have no idea which party the rich are in, then why does your story start by saying the the inane “Occupy” movement would be a natural fit for the Democratic party?
Why … because the Democrats’ inane platform is equally inane, I suppose!!
I really can’t figure out how your mind works.
You hear me make the uncontroversial remark that the rhetoric of the Dems, and the often good record of the Dems, which focuses largely on helping out the poor and working classes and getting the more fortunate to pay their fair share, is similar to what the Occupy people are demanding – even if, as I admit right up front, the Dems don’t always live up to their rhetoric. – that’s the whole point of this post and this protest.
And somehow what you hear me saying is that no individual Democrats are wealthy. That all the wealthy are Republicans. (And even that the wealthy are our enemy, which I’m not really saying.)
So. Just can’t understand how you hear what you hear sometimes.
“And somehow what you hear me saying is that no individual Democrats are wealthy”……. Hmmmm
Have you ever heard Limousine Democrats and its meaning?
The entire liberal Hollywood has billions inside these banks which you want to occupy, including Warren Buffett, George Soros, Nancy Pelosi, Dianne_Feinstein, etc. etc. etc.
It is Democrat,s banks which are oppressing us.
1. Another with rocks in the head? I already said I KNOW, EVERYONE KNOWS, wealthy liberals and wealthy Democrats exist.
2. That damn Buffett, that damn Soros, that damn Pelosi. I would forgive them their great wealth if they only spent a lot of their time working to make sure that wealth and opportunity are distributed more fairly. Oh. You’re saying they already do? NEVER MIND.
I’m realizing that Fiala, the Czech currency trader, is joining the rest of America’s right wing in bashing George Soros, the Hungarian currency trader.
Don’t you know Soros was more responsible than probably any other individual in bringing down Communism, and bringing democracy, to your part of the world? Rightwingers don’t seem to know or remember that, but you should.
“I would forgive them their great wealth if they only spent most of their time working to make sure that wealth and opportunity are distributed more fairly.”……… Hmmmm
Why don’t you condemn them then.
Since I am fairly familiar with FX market, do you know that Warren Buffett is Obama’s adviser and based thereon cooked up the Dodd–Frank Act out of which he is single-handily benefiting by the billions?
If I could open your head by a stone or the can opener thus be able to show the details of the Dodd–Frank Act to you and damage it caused to USA world wide, you would instantly became a conservative.
This is a moment where historically liberals get restless and start dressing in brown or blue shirts (it depends), promulgating a violence.
That is good time to start cleansing process.
Tell us more about this “cleansing process,” Camarillo. Is it ethnic?
“Substantial part”? Whatever that is, it doesn’t mean that they are in turn advocates of Friedman-esque economic policies.
Protesters injured in Bahrain as troops open fire
This can happen very easily in Irvine too.
You bring up that kind of stuff a lot, Cook. Is this what you fantasize would happen?
Did it happened in Ken State?
Does it happen on the streets of Santa Ana and Fullerton?
Cops carry guns for their protection, not yours.
And like what Stan said about Kent State, mistakes were made and people died.
Now Vern are you going to be “out in front” as a bullet catcher, or hang back a ways and console the girlfriends of the bullet catchers?
As one gets older, there is a lot to be said about hanging back.
“Don’t you know Soros was more responsible than probably any other individual in bringing down Communism, and bringing democracy, to your part of the world?”……. Hmmmm
Please do not teach me about my world which I have lived. Concentrate to understand your world.
Just watch how the anger brought by your liberal idiot Brown will kick you right in your soft spot.
I should add that you can start seeing why I was so happy when Brown and Obama got elected. (check my prior posts)
You can never raise enough funds to organize such opposition against Brown/ Obama liberalism.
This time even reasonable liberals are joining us.
The old Bohemian cliché: Everything bad is good for something.
“Please do not teach me about my world which I have lived.”
Is this the one with the winged monkeys or the one where you yell “Wolverines!”?
“Winged Monkeys to descend on Truman Dinner in search of Ruby Slippers.” “Ruby Slippers found everywhere.”
If I do say so myself, my sign ROCKS!
“my sign ROCKS!”……. Hmmmm
Maybe in Encino!… not in OC.
Mr Precious Stone’s sign DID rock. ALmost as much as my four signs. Pictures to come…
What a big plonker you are….I would never be caught dead with a bloody sign! You can’t rock a sign unless of course it is funny like “Bunch me, I’m a stupid liberal!”.
🙂 Thanks for making laugh, hard day being not one of the 99%!
You won’t like the sign, Camarillo. That’s how good it was!
Vern, I’ll get the pix to you ASAP.
