Texas Governor Rick Perry kicked off his 2012 run for the United States Presidency at Newport Beach’s Roger’s Gardens before a lively and vocal crowd of about 1000 supporters. Not surprisingly, Perry’s speech focused on the economy and job creation pointing out the gains made by Texas in the past four years in stark contrast to the United States as a whole under the Obama Administration during that same time period.
“If you want contrast, I’ve got contrast with President Obama,” commented a charismatic Perry. “I want to wake up every day and have it my goal to render Washington D.C. irrelevant to your lives,” Perry said in remarks that were wildly received by the crowd. The Presidential candidate also focused on the size and purpose of the federal government calling current policies misguided and confusing economic growth with the growth of government.
Before Governor Perry took the dais, remarks were made that the last time that a crowd this size was gathered at this location it was for then California Governor Ronald Reagan. A very warm reception was also provided to former OC Republican Party Chairman Tom Fuentes who literally left his death bed to do the invocation. Presidential candidate Perry was introduced to the crowd by Orange County Supervisor Shawn Nelson who lauded the “provocative” nature of the Texas Governor’s style. “Is it ‘provocative’ to ask that the interpretation of the Constitution be limited to the actual words of the document?” queried Nelson. “To make a change in this country we are going to need a candidate who is willing to use provocative language to shake up politics as usual.”
A single protest sign could be seen in the distance poking out above the profile of the building, but the noise of the excited crowd drowned out any intended message.
How about this slogan:
NO NEW TEXAS!
As if we haven’t been burned enogh by GOP hacks from the lonestar state, Rick Perry??? Come on.

Given the fact this campaign event took place in Newport Beach, I can guarantee that a majority of people in this crowd consisted of millionaires who were there only because they want a Republican president who’ll give them more free handouts.
This King of Corporate Welfare has a lengthy track record of giving hundreds of millions dollars in taxpayer money to such needy multi-billion dollar firms like as Lockheed Martin, Tyson Foods, Texas Instruments, Bank of America, Home Depot, and others.

Governor, Governor! Go on home, your state’s on fire!
“…my goal to render Washington D.C. irrelevant to your lives,” hm? There’s no way he wants the Feds to be irrelevant to Texas this month. He’s going to have to live the usual cognitive dissonance of the modern Republican.
Plus side, I’ve been telling everybody for months that this is the guy we’ll be running against, long before he joined the race. I’ve been watching him since 1990 when I was in Austin. I know chapter and verse…

Perry Avoids ‘Provocative Language’ In OC
Orange County Supervisor Shawn Nelson had a request for Gov. Rick Perry while introducing him before a speech today. According to a Washington Post account, Nelson asked for ‘some inflammatory rhetoric’ and then goaded the Texan by asking, ‘When an organization promises to give away more than what we mathematically know it takes in, what do you call it?’
Perhaps feeling a bit gun shy after his provocative performance at the debate last night, Perry completely failed to mention Social Security at all during his eight minute stump speech. Perhaps with an eye towards the presidents address tonight, he focused on jobs.
— Give us colorful stuff like that, Geoff!
I think calling the social security system a Ponzi scheme is accurate and not at all inflamatory. I could have spent more time on the Nelson comments, but that would have detracted from the real purpose of the piece.
Good. I hope he KEEPS calling it a Ponzi scheme. It will ensure his defeat.
That is funny – it IS a Ponzi scheme by any definition!
Well, by your definition, maybe. But a Ponzi scheme’s purpose is to defraud. Social Security is an equitable system that has, and continues, to work very well for its intended purpose–to provide a source of support for people as they age.
Of course, G, your upset is the fact that there’s all this money there, and it’s handled efficiently with about 2% administrative costs. The greedmeisters just hate the fact that they can’t get their snouts in it and start sucking our fees and commissions like they get to do in the big casino we call Wall Street. Admit it–doesn’t it just drive you crazy?
Even Chris “tingle up my leg” Matthews agrees it’s a Ponzi scheme:

Once the American people (particularly the youth) get through the MSM lies and realize that the “lockbox” is empty, they will know the truth as well.

I would have been interested in hearing you explain the reason why Supervisor Shawn Nelson, the self-professed founder of the “Tea Party” movement in Orange County, backs Texas Governor Rick Perry, another crooked politician who has given away hundreds of millions of dollars of taxpayer money to big business interests.
I thought Nelson was opposed to wasteful government spending? Or is wasteful government spending O.K. with him as long as it enriches the wealthy businessmen who finance his political campaigns–as was the case in Perry’s situation?
It is well-documented that Perry was a “pay-to-play” Governor.
But aren’t they all?

To inform us that yet another buffoon wants to become president?
We already have one in the Oval Office.
Hm, I don’t see that. I know you wanted a positive cheerleading piece on this candidate you support, but still the Nelson comments would have added a little color and nuance. And we all know Shawn over here.
Nice picture by the way. You must have been close to the front!

Actually, the biggest Ponzi scheme in the world is “free market capitalism,” whose primary beneficiaries happen to be the gang of thieves that run Wall Street and finance the Democratic and Republican parties.
If it wasn’t for the fact “free market capitalism” is propped up by massive amounts of taxpayer money, mostly from the working and middle classes, this rotten system would collapse overnight like a house of cards.
Your reply is confusing enough to make clear response difficult. To the extent that their is government interference in the free market system, that is not “free market capitalism.: Firm market capitalism is the cornerstone of this country and is being challenged by the ever increasing creep of government interference.
Yes, yes. That’s why, in an environment of ever-decreasing regulation on the financial system that Mr. Roberts speaks of, we just about experienced a second Great Depression in 2008.
Duane:
Wouldn’t corporatism be a more appropriate term for what you are describing? Just saying.

I deliberately put “free market capitalism” in quotes because it is a hypothetical concept that only exists on paper. It never has existed anywhere on this planet for very long in any shape or form. And where it has been tried, it has failed miserably. That’s a fact.
In respect to “free market capitalism” being the “cornerstone of this country,” that’s not true. If you read your history books, the foundation of the United States economy in 1787 was based on slavery–a system where the state forced people to labor for others.
When you have the state force millions of people to work at subsistence to cultivate cotton so plantation owners can make money selling it cheaply to textile mills in Great Britain, that’s massive “government interference” of the marketplace.
Since that time, the U.S. government has always massively intervened in the economic system in one way of another, mostly on behalf of the tiny handful of politically-connected rich people who own all the property. And they acquired their wealth mostly through theft anyways.
As for state intervention in the economy being a failure, that’s nonsense. Many key industries in this country were built from the ground up with massive amounts of taxpayer subsidies. An excellent example of this is the aerospace industry.
The only reason why Boeing and other big aerospace firms even exist is because they received–and still receive–billions of dollars of taxpayer subsidies through defense contracts, research grants, and other cash handouts from their favorite relative, Uncle Sam.
And if you look at the history of the aerospace industry, it is a history of the U.S. government massively intervening in the economy to create a market out of thin air for planes. In fact, Boeing would have gone bankrupt in the 1950s if the Pentagon hadn’t rushed to its rescue.
The point of me jabbing Republicans like Rick Perry is because politicians like him are dishonest when they talk about “free market capitalism.” The reality is, they are big supporters of corporate welfare for big business interests–especially for their campaign donors.
The Democrats, although they’re just a bunch of crooks too, are slightly more honest about this and admit state intervention is needed to prop up “free market capitalism.” So I give them a little less slack on this issue, but they are by no means any better.

Remember that I put “free market capitalism” in quotes because I’m of the opinion it is a hypothetical concept that hasn’t really existed in reality, at least not for long.
But neither has “communism” existed in forms that Karl Marx and Frederick Engels envisioned when they criticized industrial capitalism of the late 19th century.
As for the word “corporatism,” I really have no objections toward using that term to describe capitalism as it exists in the United States, not to mention most of the world.
I think it more accurately describes what is going on than all this stuff that Republican politicians like Perry regurgitate about “free markets,” which is mostly nonsensical gibberish.
The U.S. economy not only is dominated by big corporations that receive massive amounts of taxpayer subsidies, but that are also monopolies and oligopolies in their respective markets.
The man is another swaggering, mealy mouthed, and profoundly mediocre Texas governor who doesn’t quite grasp scientific facts and is fine with executions of people who are denied a chance of proving inocence. He has, though, paved the way for Texas to be the frontrunner for minimum wage jobs so the corporate interests are sure to love this douchebag.
Let’s tote them up:
I look forward to eventually reading a news report here about this event, if one ever appears.
Greg – I forgot that you are used to watching MSNBC where all of the spin is pro-left/demonizing right – so sorry, I’ll try to be more Olberman like next time.
Yes, the evil MSNBC as opposed to an entire network (you know) that is the official mouthpiece of the Republican party and talk radio. Good attempt. Why not now beat up on a welfare recipient–some guy who’s getting an underserved cheese sandwich.
Having watched a pretty wide variety of television, I find your characterization laughable. I think that generally CNN and Fox do an equivalent job of reporting the news, though I think that Fox does a better job of distinuguishing and labeling news and commentary. MSNBC doesn’t even bother with any attempt to do anything but espouse its own extremely twisted leftist viewpoint which it characterizes as “fact.” I think that MSNBC and TMZ are about equally good at reporting political news.
“I think that Fox does a better job of distinuguishing and labeling news and commentary.”
That is such a bald faced lie, when you’re defending a network run by Robert Aisles. Try again. How about defending Perry’s blatant theocratic plan while you’re at it? And how about defending SS as a Ponzi scheme?
Roger, oops. Brain cramp from seeing intelligent people supporting the turning of the US into a third world country.
A ponzi scheme is when early investors are paid out of the principal of later investors who will never recoup their investment. Pretty much exactly describes social security. I have put about 10 times into it what I would ever pull out and I am not counting on it at all for my retirement since it will likely be long gone by then.
I notice that you and Newbie keep saying the term “Ponzi scheme” as if it is an apt description of SS. A scheme is set up to deliberately defraud people for one’s personal advancement, like Madoff and your freinds in the financial sector, who would love to get their hands on this pile of cash and suck the life out of it.
With SS we all contribute, and we all will get a payout, and it could exceed what you’ve put in. It also benefits the great majority of Americans in that it provides a small measure of financial security. But you guys hate that, don’t you? When your philospphy is simply “what about me” I’m sure there’s no getting through to you.
I contribute to the video poker machines at The Orleans and I get a very minimal payout. This is why you should contribute monies to the machines at the Native casinos. Looser machines and better payouts.
Well, we DO know that Mr. Willis does not support Perry’s position on the death penalty. Nor, by the way, will many Catholics.
good points gw . people like rapscallion or other far left wacko jobs get their stuff from mshatebc their ratings are in the crapper just like their views , rachel im a man maddow , cris leg tingling matthews and ed i have zero . zero ratings schultz .
Clever usage of ad hominems in place of a coherent argument. Isn’t junior high back in session? Are you using a school computer?
hey rapscallion or rat farts or what ever you are = like i said WHEN YOU HAVE NOTHING INSULT THE OTHER GUY .. maybe you should go back to school and perhaps retrain that big lib mind of yours , where did you go to school , cuba , russia ,or was YOUR pal hugo your teacher .

I’m so sick of the Grating One and Quinn b**ching and moaning about liberals insulting people only to see them turn around and do it. What a couple of hypocrites. I’m pretty sure they know what that word means.
I did like Victor Hugo, GO, but I doubt you have any sense of what that means.
And, anon–you’re giving them too much credit, probably, but it is good to take the high road.
and i am sick of liberal hypocrites like anon, rap , and libs who say we should be more sensantive to other parties and then call them let see ,astrotruff , terrorist , tell them to go to hell , and sons of bitches , and want to bring back slavery aka ambulance chaser jessie .. liberal polices and the our pres are destroying this country with their thinking hoping in nov we can change that .
Did you guys call my friend Grate One an “Astrotruff?” For shame! Someone please think of the children…
Who ever said we’re sensitive to other parties, and why should we be? After 8 eyars of Bush and the continual traitorous shovelling of the country over to the very rich, no, pal, we’re not tolerant or sensitive regasrding the greedmeisters. Not when these assholes are ruining us.
*Way off the subject…………..
Perry was there for 8 minutes…..the real fund raiser was at the $10,000 dollar a plate
dinner…….that was not reported.
They had several Senior Citizens pass out and they had to call the paramedics……to save their lives.
The guy is a Bilderberger connected Council on Foreign Relations Democrat in Lord of the Lambs clothing……….but then who cares? Remember Mike Huckabee was Bill Clinton’s best friend and Lt. Governor of Arkansas. We do love the Arkansas football team this and last year.
Meanwhile, are Roger or Rupert running for anything this year? Ross the Boss….said
“the devil was in the details”. Will Rogers said: “All I know is what I read on liberal blogs!…..or; in the newspapers”
R.I.P.
