Hot off the fabled OJ transom: Irvine’s estimable Democratic Korean-American mayor Sukhee Kang has decided to challenge [either Crazy Dana Rohrabacher or Lazy John Campbell, whichever it ends up being] to represent the new OC coastal district in Congress – which at this point in the redistricting process would include Irvine, Newport, Huntington, Costa Mesa, and thereabouts down to Laguna Beach. Wow – what a challenging mess of Republican territory. I wish him luck!
Remember, this will be not only the first Congressional election conducted under our brand-spanking-new un-gerrymandered districts, but also our first one under our new “jungle primary” rules, where we could conceivably end up seeing Dana, John and Sukhee go head to head – that would be fun!
Here’s the press release from his new site, kangforcongress.com. And Dan C whose turf that is has some thoughts…
IRVINE MAYOR SUKHEE KANG EMBARKS ON HISTORIC CAMPAIGN FOR UNITED STATES CONGRESS
Vows to Bring the Same Forward-Thinking Leadership to Washington that has Helped Irvine become one of the Safest, Smartest and Greenest Large Cities in the Country
Irvine, CA – Irvine Mayor Sukhee Kang today announced his candidacy for the newly reconfigured Orange County Coastal seat with the support of local constituents and leaders from throughout the Orange Country region. The new seat has not yet been assigned a number, but the current proposed outlines correspond generally to Congressional District 48.
“I look forward to running in California’s new open primary system in which all candidates are on the same ballot, and every voter regardless of party registration can vote for any candidate.” Kang said.
“As someone who has served in local government for close to a decade, I will bring a direct, hands-on approach and vast regional experience to Congress. Our district deserves a representative who willprotect and fight for the interests of the people of Orange County,” said Kang.
After two successful terms on the City Council, Mayor Kang was elected by the citizens of Irvine in 2008, becoming the first Korean American to serve as mayor of a major U.S. city. In November 2010, Kang was overwhelmingly reelected with more than 64 percent of the vote. During his term in the Irvine City Council, Mayor Kang has been recognized as an effective leader who finds solutions to public safety, education, quality of life and economic vitality. Under his leadership, Irvine has continued to be recognized as one of the safest, smartest, greenest and best-managed cities in America. Some major accomplishments include:
- FBI’s Safest Large City in America (seven years in a row)
- Money Magazine’s Best Places to Live in California 2008
- Business Week’s Best City to Ride out the Recession (2008)
- 2008 National Resources Defense Council’s 2009 Smartest Cities (2nd in California)
- One of the 100 Best communities for Young People.
“Mayor Kang is known as Irvine’s ‘education mayor’ for his leadership efforts fighting against state budget cuts,” said former Irvine Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Gwen Gross. “I am supporting his candidacy because I know he will continue fighting for the right issues as a member of Congress.”
Mayor Kang’s own American success story has helped guide his inclusive and engaging leadership style. Active throughout the Irvine community, he has forged strong and supportive relationships with the business community, education community, and many cultural, service and non-profit organizations that serve the citizens of Irvine. Prior to his service on the Irvine City Council, Mayor Kang served as a Governor’s appointee on the California Workforce Investment Board and was the Mayor’s appointee to the Irvine Finance Commission.
In addition to his official City responsibilities, Mayor Kang serves on the Orange County Great Park Board, Orange County Fire Authority, Southern California Association of Governments Regional Council, Orange County Council of Governments, League of California Cities Orange County Division, U.S. Conference of Mayors, and the National League of Cities.
Mayor Kang and his wife Joanne have lived in Orange County for 34 years. Their son Alan, a graduate of UC San Diego and earned his MBA from USC Marshall School of Business, is a Senior Scientist at Johnson & Johnson ; their daughter Angie, a graduate from UC Berkeley’s School of Law (Boalt Hall,) is currently an attorney with Latham and Watkins.
Sukhee’s a great guy, and if we can get rid of the execrable Rohrabacher or Campbell, so much the better.
“Irvine….one of the Safest, Smartest and Greenest Large Cities in the Country.”
Smartest? Take one look at the management of the Not So Great Park, where Sukhee serves as a board member. I’ve seen Native American casinos and marijuana farms go up faster than the “activity” that has been going on there in the last 9 years. Although I do say that the overflow lot of abandoned RVs is a fine touch to the concrete and unplanted trees that make up Boss Agran’s wet dream/scam on the Irvine taxpayers. Speaking of casinos and pot farms, that might not be a bad idea for the site. That might be enough to get the pearl clutching puritans/NIMBYS like Dick Ackerman all up in arms.
At least Sukhee not Boss Agran…which isn’t saying a whole lot since he is a member of the Boss Agran machine. And Vern, you should know better than to quote anything from the Northwood Night Stalker. He’s a waste of skin who is nothing more than a pathetic apologist for the Agran machine.
Yeah well, LOC isn’t exactly my favorite blog, but Dan does know more about Sukhee than I do, and I’m trying to get past all the old bad blog blood.
Another Beth Krom fiasco – I can’t wait.
The Northwood Night Stalker sings the praises of the Irvine Public Schools Foundation (IPSF), which is nothing more than a corporatist front for Emporer Bren and his real estate empire. Where are all the teaching assistants that were supposed to be hired at all of the Irvine elementary schools with their “fundraisers?” And why is it that the Irvine Unified School District is among the top five school districts in the state that get sued by parents? Ask the Northwood Night Stalker those questions, along with any questions about the ethical behavior of Boss Agran, and watch his face turn redder than Hawaiian Punch.
Lest you forget, I live in Irvine too. And I have lived here for a lot longer than the Northwood Night Stalker. I remember when we had actual orange groves.
Vern,
I’ll skip the Dan C. commentary!
BUT I insist you drop the TRANSOM bullshit!
I am troubled that best the OCDP can come up with is the Beth Krom’s, Sukhee Kang and Ed Chau of the world.
Yeah, I started with the “transom” just to make fun of Matt. But I guess that’s gone on long enough.
great, now that krom didn’t work theyre trying sukhee. the agranistas are at it again.. nothing to see here.
Kang is also a huge supporter of the D.A.R.E. program.
“We in Irvine know something about public safety – what works, what does not. We support public education and are active on high school campuses by deploying school resource officers and a comprehensive D.A.R.E. program to help guide our youth to be model citizens.” – Sukhee Kang
Translation: we have snooping narcs and are running MasterPlannedistan schools like prisons and TSA lines at airports. Besides Sukhee, if your officers are doing an effective job, then why is it so easy to score a dimebag at Northwood High School? Not that I know firsthand, I’m just saying. Of course, you better not let Emperor Bren know that because that might affect his ability to sell houses at overinflated prices with 99 year land leases. (You own the house, he owns the land. What a deal!)
I will ask this question again to any Democrat like I did to two Beth Krom for Congress supporters who were at one of our Yes on 19 rallies last year. You say you want the War on Drugs to end and want law enforcement to quit locking up people for non-violent drug offenses. Yet, why do you and members of your party (including your favored candidate Madam Krom) continue to support candidates that favor increased funding to punitive programs such as D.A.R.E. and overseas drug eradication efforts in places like Mexico and Afghanistan over harm reduction policies that have worked in places like Portugal and Spain? Furthermore, why do you continue to support candidates that want to keep the status quo when it comes to the growth of the prison industrial complex? So you can compete with the Republican rhetoric of being “tough on crime?”
At least the Republicans are honest enough to pull the “Jesus says its bad” or “the pandemic that will spread to our children” card with me. What’s your excuse?
Well, that’s certainly a strike against him, and will dampen my enthusiasm somewhat. Still I vote on more than one issue, and would hope he’d beat whatever Talibani, war-mongering, poor-screwing Rethuglican goes against him.
Maybe we have time to talk sense into him on the Drug War.
I seriously doubt it. You have to realize that there are a lot of pearl clutching NIMBYs that live in Irvine, including the Northwood Night Stalker who you got the story from. A lot of them that are members of both major political parties Anything that would sully the cosmetic master planned design of Boss Agran’s and Emporer Bren’s vision of a pure utopian community is cause for immediate eradication. I know. I live in the Northwood area (I own the land on my house BTW unlike some of the other suckers) and deal with them everyday. Hell, ask Bartlett for all I care. He lives here too. But don’t bother to ask the Northwood Night Stalker. He’s just happy that he can rip on Tustin and Santa Ana from the spare bedroom or bathroom of his comfy and well coifed Northwood confines.
Kenlay is right. As long as the 70th AD Democrats keeping plugging in the Agranista of the Week and seek to outdo the Republican Party in their codewords to mask their 19th century rhetoric (“secure borders,” “public safety,” “family values” etc.), they will continue to see the same result at the ballot box every two years and end up with rubes like Spanky and the self proclaimed leader of “The Resistance.”
Ask Sukhee how the promotion for increasing ridership on the iShuttle has been going lately. About as well as the construction that is going on at the Not So Great Park. Oh wait, there isn’t any!
70th AD is assemby district. Kang would be CD-48 for Congress. Must be the weed talking…
Kang has power. When Sukhee Kang rand for Mayor he got Korean American Republicans to support him. State official Republican Michelle Park Steele endorsed him for Mayor of Irvine. Now, wealthy Republican Mike Myung Ki Hong is campaigning for Sukhee Kang to be congressmen. He supports Republican Ed Royce but is more loyal to Koreans. Hong’s head person John Suh from Korean American Economic Development Corporation will support Democrat Kang and try to bring more Korean American Republicans to vote Democrat. Mike Hong and John Suh could get Korean companies to help finance campaign. He can win and will represent OC very well.
Nice info, Bobby. Keep in touch with us.
why is campbell so popular?
