How can the 2010 U.S. Census reach out to immigrants when ICE keeps raiding their communities?
The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Agency could not be conducting immigration raids in Santa Ana at a worst time. Two such raids were spotted this weekend, and yet another today.
The 2010 U.S. Census is beginning in March, and will run throughout 2010. In fact the Santa Ana office of the Census is opening this week, on January 7.
In fact the City of Santa Ana is promoting the Census on their website. Why? Simple. If we don’t accurately count everyone in our city, we will pay for it. “The information the census collects helps to determine how more than $400 billion dollars of federal funding each year is spent on infrastructure and services,” according to the U.S. Census.
Simply put, we need everyone to participate in the Census – but these ICE raids are going to scare many residents in our city. They won’t want to talk to the Census takers. That is a disaster for Santa Ana!

The Census Boycott makes sense, depending on how you look at it. This is the only strategy that will actually pressure legislators.
Enough of having states benefit financially from immigrants without defining their status as legal and worthy citizens of this country.
Can you imagine an amnesty program these days — oh my, it will empty out that grey dept within the IRS= the place where immigrants’ billions of dollars in paid taxes go– and since they won’t be claiming refunds –yup how could we let this lil funnel melt down?? mmmm

I heard that raids of crack houses are scaring people too! Dope pushers and users might now answer the census survey.
So lets top all criminal prosecution. Whew! doesn’t that make you all feel better.
We have tried to keep the borders closed with zero positive results. It’s time to give open borders a chance. Let’s open them (allow tourist visas just like American’s get to visit other countries) for 5 years and then check the results. I think you will find a reduction in crime. The increased payment of sales and other taxes will more than pay for any increase in needed services. Let’s also create a path to becoming an American that is easy and faster than our current process.
no it wont hurt we need to get rid of people who should not be here . post 8 NO WAY more visas who will get expired and they wont leave . taxes these people work under the table . dont give me they pay taxes stuff with products . and money they make gets sent back home .

Am I missing something here? If a person is in the country legally, what is the compelling reason they would have for being “scared” at the prospect of talking to a census taker? That makes no sense.

Yes, you are missing the entire point. Both ICE and Census workers are federal workers. Immigrants won’t want to talk to Census workers if they are freaked out about federal immigration raids.
Google the subject and you will find many news articles about this.
Conducting ICE raids in Santa Ana right now is idiotic. Loretta Sanchez needs to step up and stop these raids and announce that publicly. Otherwise we will know just how useless she really is.
I THINK the point, anon, is that the census workers also want to count the number of undocumented residents for various purposes. And also many immigrant households and families have a mixture of documented and undocumented people.
Other words without the smoke filled words… They are afraid, because they are not allowed to be in this country without permission from the feds.

myself and children have been effected by this ice raid in the most horrible way. my husband has been here legally with a permanent green card in the united states for almost 30 years. 20 yrs ago he did get into a little trouble with the law.. he did successfully complete his sentence and paid his dues. now almost 20 yrs. later with no run ins not even a speeding ticket he has been arrested by ice (deportation officer) with no warning because of this incident 20 yrs ago:-( we are married have 5 children and both have careers, pay taxes and have never asked the state or government for help! so you tell me how this is justifiable. now that they have taken my husband for the first time in my life i am having to ask for help from the state and government. my children are heart broken and we are in the midst of losing everything. ooooh yea and once again he has been here LEGALLY. before you go and throw your racial profiling out there you should get the facts. and the immigrants are NOT the only ones effected by this! since the government wants to take him away from us and deport him to mexico now the government can get REALLY use to taking care of my children because i cant do it on my own. WELFARE LINE here we come…..

For all the people that agree with these ridiculous raids I’m assuming that they are willing to accept minimum wage pays, cleaning toilets, field work at over 100 degrees weather, and working seven days a week without overtime pay! For peace and mind think of all innocent children whose parents will work on anything just to have a better living for them!

In a couple of months the 2010 Census part II will come out. You can draw your conclusions of the hard count then.
(But the hard count is done and those are the legal numbers used for redistricting)
