Criminal immigrants amongst us

Immigrant Santas

The latest immigration sweep netted some interesting subjects from the North Pole…

“Immigration Sweep Nets 286” blares the headline from the Saturday, December 12, Orange County Register. The story that accompanies this headline describes a 3 day sweep throughout California by Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers that nabbed nearly 300 immigrants, 11 in Orange County, suspected of being in the country illegally with criminal backgrounds and standing deportation orders.

The article reports that more than 80% of those taken into custody had prior convictions for serious and violent crimes, including rape, armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon. One of those arrested was a Salvadorian man with an outstanding deportation order following his conviction for lewd and lascivious acts with a child.

This ICE enforcement action appears to have snared some really bad immigrants. Prison sentences and deportation should follow. However, we cannot relax because we know from other media reports over time that some deported victimizers return to try to again victimize those who live here peacefully and productively. ICE needs to keep up the good work.
