Nevada Warden, E.K. McDaniels’ “trophy potograph” of Timothy Redman after a beating received at Ely State Prison in 2000. A portion of the man’s face was torn off by guards.
From the human rights group, Make the Walls Transparent, “They pumped can after can of pepper spray into the cell; they came back every 20 minutes and emptied another can …a big can, maybe half the size of a hairspray can. Then an officer looked in the cell, turned to the lieutenant and said, Hey, This guy hung himself.”
The lieutenant answered,”Spray him again!”
Yesterday morning, Timothy Redman, a death row inmate at Ely State Prison hung himself in his cell after being tortured for 2-2 1/2 hours, sprayed repeatedly with mace, until he couldn’t take it anymore and hung himself. The unit was immediately locked down.
The warden reportedly came to the unit and stood outside the cell making jokes and laughing as Timothy’s dead body was removed. The White Pine County Sheriff arrived, cordoned off the area with yellow crime scene tape, and allegedly stood around laughing with the warden and associate warden. A doctor came to pronounce him dead. Correctional officers rolled up his property and emptied his cell. Timothy was rolled past other inmates without so much as a cover over his face; his face blue and just barely laying correctly on the gurney. LINK
This was no suicide. This was MURDER.
WHY is thuggery allowed to run our prisons? Trapping and torturing a prisoner to death is inexcusable. There needs to be federal oversight for rogue institutions like this one. 90% of inmates will eventually be released into the general public. Abuses to prisoners breed mental illness and aggression that will eventually threaten harm to innocents. Brutality by prison authorities is a terrible return for taxpayer dollars.

Red. While I do not condone what happened in the Nevada prison perhaps you might add “the rest of the story.”
Namely, why was Timothy Redman imprisoned in the first place?
“Court upholds death penalty for Las Vegas killer
By Cy Ryan (contact)
Wednesday, July 22, 2009 | 4:53 p.m.
CARSON CITY – The Nevada Supreme Court has upheld the death penalty for Timothy L. Redman, who was found guilty of shooting and beating to death another man in Las Vegas.
Redman had testified he believed Max Biederman wanted to have sex with Redman’s girlfriend.
In his appeal Redman posed many issues including that there were not enough felony aggravators to justify the death penalty imposed by a three-judge panel in 1990.
But the Supreme Court, in a 6-0 decision, said Redman was under a sentence of imprisonment when he murdered Biederman; had been previously convicted of assault and had mutilated the victim.
Biederman died from a massive injury to his head and suffered three gunshot wounds to his face. After he was dead, Redman amputated Biederman’s hands and attempted to cut out his teeth to prevent Biederman’s identification.
Redman was on parole at the time he killed Biederman for offenses committed in West Virginia, including breaking and entering, felonious jail breaking and assault.
Redman presented testimony from his mother, who said her son was physically and mentally abused. She testified she ordered him to stand in a corner for hours with his knees bent and his father had threatened to remove Redman’s hands with a chainsaw for stealing.
A psychiatrist testified that Redman perceived Biederman posed a sexual threat to his girlfriend. Redman said that Biederman had asked him to arrange for the girlfriend to meet Biederman in a hotel room.
The ruling upholds the decision of District Judge Lee Gates, who denied a petition for a writ of habeas corpus.
Redman, now 45 years old, is on death row at the state prison in Ely and has also been convicted of battery by a prisoner with a deadly weapon.”
He murdered and mutilated another human being. Perhaps we do a literal interpretation from the Old Testament in the Bible and call it “an eye for an eye” as found in Exodus 21:22-25 or Leviticus 24:21 which reads:
“Whoever kills an animal must make restitution, but whoever kills a man must be put to death.”
Larry, I appreciate your finding the crimes that Redman committed. I looked around and somehow didn’t get a good link for it. Could you possibly provide the actual link to the information you posted? I love a good link!
And actually, it does look like you condone what happened if that last paragraph came from YOU. IF you subscribe to vigilante “justice” of prison guards doing basically the same thing as the murderer, Tim Redman, did, then you are saying our criminal justice system is no better than the murderer it was supposed to hold until his actual (humane) execution. Quoting the old testament to support your justification of this man’s murder is just pathetic, Larry. That’s something that they do in the middle east – only they quote the Koran – as the excuse.
What’s next? Giving the cops free reign to show up at a party and open fire for disturbing the peace if they suspect gang member affiliation there?
Larry, I see your point, I really do. Unfortunately, you had to end it with a pathetic quote from the old testament. During the time of “Exodus” and “Leviticus”, they also stoned people for adultery, worshiping other gods and a number of other reasons. I’m sure you wouldn’t want that.
#2 Red,
“Quoting the old testament to support your justification of this man’s murder is just pathetic, Larry. That’s something that they do in the middle east – only they quote the Koran – as the excuse.”
Exactly Red, I don’t get folks like Larry, who are willing to twist themselves into pretzels in order to justify something inexcusable, like the murder of inmates while they are in government custody. Right-wingers are always prattling about “American values”, which to most of us means the rule-of-law and justice, but it seems they are always willing to ditch the rule-of-law if they can indulge in a little bloodlust and vengeance.
anonster & Red.
What is inexcusable is your feeling sorry for a murderer. Did you work for Rose Bird in a prior decade?
I intentionally referenced the bible to acknowledge that for over 2,000 years it has been a policy that “if you do the crime you do the time.”
Let’s roll the clock back. If Timothy Redman didn’t kill Max Biederman his life may not have ended as it did.
And yes Red. I quoted directly from the bible in the final sentence. Although 2,000 years ago the policy was tough on crime, and whereas that policy was extreme, I do not have compassion for murders. Do you?
Red. I am truly surprised. You love story links and couldn’t find my reference? Simply go back to the post quote. However, I’ll make it easy for you late on a Saturday afternoon.

larry you know how these bleeding heart libs are. they support the criminals more than the victims .
What’s the big deal? I looked worse after a night in the Mosh Pit when I was a teenager in the 1980′s.
Don’t forget that Jesus forgave the criminal that was crucified next to him, thereby saving him from damnation…
Art. Yes, the criminal next to Jesus was forgiven for his sins but he was still put to death.
While we can be forgiven for our sins that does not and should not alter the obigation for criminals to pay their debt to society by being sent to prison or sentenced to death if warranted and according to our justice system.
A few years ago I corresponded with prisoners as part of a jail correspondence ministry from our church. Many of these inmates sent me notes indicating that they had accepted Jesus to be their Savior. Note: Other than a return envelope we did not provide any contact information such as our names or addresses. While I cannot provide any names, one of my colleagues was corresponding with a famous mass murderer who is still in prison.
My earlier comment reflected my disappointment with Red for writing a post with compassion for the murderer while failing to add a single word on the heinous crime he committed. As reported in the news this was not his only criminal act.
To repeat. I do not condone his being murdered while under the alleged protection of the prison guards.
As a side note: I recall Supreme Court Judge Rose Bird who would never enforce the death penalty resulting in her eventual recall. For all those bleeding hearts perhaps you might visit with the torn families whose lives have been forever changed by acts from criminals, many of whom are never captured.
#5 Larry,
“What is inexcusable is your feeling sorry for a murderer.”
Of course, leave it to Larry to erect a straw-man argument. What Red and I deplore is vigilante justice, what we want are our institutions to be places we can be proud of and trust that the rule-of-law is maintained and upheld, yes, EVEN for murderers. Unsurprisingly, Larry doesn’t understand the concept or the value that our constitutionally guaranteed civil rights have played in making our nation unique, otherwise he wouldn’t be so careless with them . Why Larry wants to reduce this nation to the level of some repressive and thuggish third-world country is beyond me, he must hate America.
Anonster. Straw man? This is not about the Wizard of Oz. No inmate should be attacked or killed while incarcerated be it by a rival gang or a man in a blue uniform.
Did you give any thought to the man who was murdered? How do you feel about his fate? Oh, that’s irrelevant as he is now dead.
Yup. I wish to reduce America to a third world nation. I don’t have to do that. President Obama is doing quite well without any assistance from me.
Thanks for the link, Larry. You do know how much i love orginal links!
Larry,
I would much rather attend the church that Art goes to than the church you attend. I like the lessons he’s learned much better. Your pastor/priest must be teaching some very hard-hearted lessons about your fellow man.
I agree with anonster, 100%. Your expectation of how this country should operate is a very substandard version of what we are promised in the constitution. I guess we can just be thankful that you’re not in charge of all that much that can affect the lives of other citizens. You’d most likely mismanage that duty to others.
Red. Personally, I don’t care what church you attend. Just do it. We are members of an Assembly of God church and can be found there every week. As such we have a senior pastor not a priest. Instead of making judgements of pastor Campbell perhaps you might attend our church and hear his message instead of your above fact less comments.
SPEAKING OF MISMANAGE LOOK NO FURTHER THAT THE CURRENT WHITEHOUSE .
If any of us are supposed to respect the rule of law, then it must apply to everyone, including prison guards. Unfortunately apologist for cops and prison guards like Larry more often than not allow for abuse like this to go unchallenged and not prosecuted. Most of the abuse never comes to light. Hopefully these guys end up behind bars themselves.
@Beat the Brat, if you were really at the punk gigs in the 80′s like I was, you will know first hand what the cops are capable of. My guess is that you were one of the jocks that showed up just to kick ass. You probably wore little red suspenders and docs, and listened to Screwdriver. Real Punk music was about speaking to the abuse of power, not condoning it.
Baxter. As these threads are all over the map feel free to look at my response to Art. Larry Gilbert does not condone police brutality on the streets, in a jail or prison. However, I take issue with bleeding hearts who ignore the victims (of these criminals) in these matters while posting one sided stories.
Larry,
Why don’t you email your pastor the link to this discussion and see if he sides with you on your take here. I SERIOUSLY DOUBT he’d be honored to have you represent your church in such a cruel fashion with your approval of vigilante murder of an unarmed prisoner by rogue guards and a corrupt penal system.
Go ahead. I dare you.
Red. Show me where I approved vigilante murder in this Nevada story?
You blew it by only focusing on the murderer yet failed to tell us about why he was incarcerated in the first place. Although I am a supporter of the death penalty I do not, and did not, condone what occured inside the big house.
As to my pastor you are always welcome at our church regardless of your political positions.
In case I don’t have a chance to contact you before Thursday, HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
Redman was sentenced to death for his crimes…he would have died for his heinous acts, so saying he deserved death is a moot point under these circumstances. These guards had no right to take justice into their hands. I understand the “hanging” was faked by the guards who killed him with an “overdose” pepper spray (or mace, or whatever it was). These guards, in my thinking, are far worse than Redman…they chose to torture a man confined in a small cell who wasn’t a threat to anyone–they certainly cannot claim self-defense. How they can sleep at night is a mystery to me…they were seen to be enjoying and even joking about the murder they were committing. They all need to stand trial for first-degree murder and hopefully get life sentences (I’d recommend death, except the death penalty is abhorrent to me). The apparently psychotic warden needs to stand trial as an accomplice…in fact, I’d bet that he ordered the guards to torture Redman for his own perverse pleasure…just like he enjoyed watching seriously ill inmates suffer and die because he woudn’t allow minimal medical treatment.
I’m sure this will never happen, but the conditions at Ely need to be fully investigated by an impartial panel who look at the facts and not what the warden and his cronies tell them.
Rural Nevada is cowboy country where folks believe in quick justice.Sounds like the locals administered it. That is unless Sheriff Joe from nearby Arizona was in town and did the deed.
A little history for the bleeding heart liberals.
Redman was under a sentence of imprisonment when he murdered Max Biederman; had been previously convicted of assault and had mutilated the victim.
Biederman died from a massive injury to his head with a large blunt object and suffered three gunshot wounds to his face. After he was dead, Redman chopped Biederman’s hands off and attempted to rip out his teeth to prevent Biederman’s identification.
Redman was on parole at the time he killed Biederman for offenses committed in West Virginia, including breaking and entering, felonious jail breaking and assault.
Redman had a history of violence in prison including attacks on guards, other prisoners, non-compliance, threats and so forth.
So good ridden that another murderer will never have the chance to hurt anyone ever again.
qwkinuf.
Thank you for copying the same text on the history of Redman that I added earlier.
While I support the death penalty, I do not support death squads in our prisons.
Let’s remember that despite anyone’s religious beliefs or his past transgressions, Timothy also had a family. The Redman family continues to grieve for those affected by his previous acts & now for their loss of a son, father, cousin, nephew & uncle. May God be merciful with those involved in this tragedy & provide loving support to the Redman family.
WVKAT.
While I totally agree with you that we should show compassion for Timothy’s family members, the same applies to the families of his victims, a point missed in your commentary..
“Vengeance is mine, sayeth the Lord” reckoning will come to these sadistic guards…however, just like the death penalty, it doesn’t work as a deterrent to evil actions.
old sceptic.
We do have a dilemna in this state and country don’t we? What’s the number, 70% or thereabouts? Seventy percent of what Larry? The number of released CA prisoners who find their way back to prison within three years of their release, better know as “recidivism.”
Three strikes laws. Are they effective?
What about rehabilitation. Do you truly believe that the majority of our prisoners become success stories as a result of rehabiliation after their incarceration?
Aside from not being able to address the big picture of crime in our land I will still agree that vigilate justice by Charles Bronson may work in Death Wish but that’s not a green light to those who were hired to “protect and serve.”
And by serve I don’t mean to take anothers life unless it is warranted.
Tim
A man who was once a boy. A man who was very devoted to his brothter. A man who wrote his nephew and niece poems and drew them pictures because he would never meet them. To the man who reached out when your family was going through a crisis and offered support. I am happy you are finally at peace. There will be no more thoughts of worry, only thoughts of comfort that you have gone home. I feel pain for your brother as I do the family of the man you took the life of. I was not there and I do not know the whole story and while I am sure there was a justification in your mind, there is no justification for taking anothers life. Not even a convicted murderer. You were condemned to death by lethal injection and that is how you should have died, not at the hands of cowards. I know you well enough to know, that the cowards that did this to you, could only do this to you while you were secured in a cage. Rest in peace Tim.
I will gladly attend Larry’s church! I read these threads and it is evident that people always respond to only what they want to read into a comments. Larry never onced backed the Guards, though others here have made accusations against officers, though they are unfounded. Yes, larry Old Test. did condone death of guilty, however thank Jesus–we don’t live by eye for eye anymore. God will judge his and our souls on our day,but I will leave readers with this note;a recent killer put to the chair began a nose bleed, pictures of the amount of blood at the end, resemble the many vicims he murdered,in hearing of facial damage in this story doesn’t it ring again to his victims? Just ironic/coincidence!oh yeah if the guards were behind this put them on Death role!!
Take it from someone who knew Timothy Redman…..
Goodbye and good riddance! Thanks for saving the taxpayers some money.
Inmate Redman was an @$%^&*&* I work there I should know. He provoked the officers to try to fight him, and he just killed himself to blame it on the prison. He was in for life so it doesn’t matter and we saved the tax payers some money.
You sick bloodthirsty morons. It amazes me how you mistake justice for vengeance. In my book everyone involved sould be charged with murder. I bet that would curve guards acting like heroes huh? stick them in a cell and chemically burn them to death. exactly who was the monster in this story you ignorant fools……i mean really get a grip!
wtf. no one knows that the mfer timmy killed raped timmys girlfriend and he was paying for is actions by sitting on death row…. then these gards pushed him untill he broke and i thank thats a crime . he was proble on edge any way thay werent helping him in any way mabe thay should have aproched him and tried to help instead of macen him .then my cuzz would be here so mabe i could have wrote him and understood him alittle more. i love you timmy you will always be in my heart love you cuzz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Does anyone stop to think that maybe there are mental illnesses flourishing on death row? So why don’t we diagnose the illness when they are young instead of just ignoring the problem and kill them while they are young? Why wait for them to offend? Let’s just kill all the mentally ill and abused children. That’s what you are doing to them when they have been ignored for a lifetime and commit crimes when they are older.
Yes, they have committed heinous crimes but it is sick that society executes the mentally ill.
I only look up on Tim every few years and was horrified to see this act done I was friends with him as a teen and he had many problems but he was paying for his crimes with his life the officers are their to protect inmates not torture them..I hope they all burn in hell……
I went to school with Tim, I ran around with Tim, I even attended church with Tim after I settled down, he settled down for a short time. We his friends here in Ripley WV, became afraid of Tim and knew he was very capable of murder, it came as no surprise in our home town when we found out what he had done. he should not have died the way he did, but if his sentence had been carried out and not drug out, he should have died the way he was sentenced, and yes the people who did this to him should be held accountable they had no right to do this to him, but the death sentence was justified. what the prison staff did was not, but what Tim did and was cabable of the sentence was just and should have been carried out.
