On the human side of this thread, resentment and disappointment are present in everyone. In fact, resentment can build quietly in a relationship before any of the parties is even aware of it. The cure for resentment and disappointment lie in the opposite practices of APPRECIATION and COMPASSION. Some people have not been taught those two life approaches, but they can be LEARNED with discipline and practice. ~just saying

Our liberty is our birthright. So no, we don't owe anyone a gratitude.

As for this nation, it has indeed wrought a lot of evil. We trained and armed Ho Chi Minh. We trained and armed the Taliban, who back then were called the Mujahadeen. Saddam used to be our boy too!

When will we learn to stop meddling in other countries? Why do we still maintain all those army bases, often in countries that are richer than us?

Blind servitude to our leaders is not what our Founding Fathers had in mind!

We can and should question everything - and at times we should indeed apologize for what our leaders have done.

As for your friend who found himself divorced, I am sorry for his plight. Marriage is a difficult thing to maintain. And it is a 2 way street. We don't know what his ex-wife has to say. It would be intersting to know her side of this tale. But yes, he should grieve then move on. And I would advise him not to marry again. Some folks should not go near a wedding altar.

We have much to be grateful for, but many of our fellow Americans are in dire straits. I don't blame them for being upset. Bush wrecked our economy...
