The truth is this was a combination of smart politics and economics.

Gavin is young and has several promising opportunities in front of him. There may be one cropping up pretty quickly after his term ends.

As for the economics, since the days of the Gold Rush a handfull of folks, the real money control the game in California, but especially in SF. Arnold was an anomoly, but only to the point that he quickly caved in and is now the one in a long list of public “servants”.

And 12 hours after the Clinton-endorsed Newsom packs it in, so does the Gingrich-endorsed Scozzafava in upstate New York. This is similar in that the backing of the two biggest 90s power brokers didn’t help, but contrasting thus: it shows the Democrats are getting more “centrist” while the GOP is getting more extremist. (I had a few problems with Gavin but I would rather see my party getting more progressive.)
