Los Angeles County supervisors are scrambling for ways to save money. They suggested putting unemployed parents to work caring for their own children as part of the proposed changes to CalWorks and other state government aid programs.
This could save nearly $270 million. They want to target the cuts to the people who are the most expensive. What do you think? Do you think that the County or State should be paying parents to babysit their own kids? Don’t you worry that if the state pays fellow single mothers to stay home, they will become dependent on welfare? Many parents would join this new wave of having kids and getting paid to watch their own kid bandwagon. Let’s let our readers speak.
According to StateMaster, the foreign-born population of California is 26.8% of the total, far and away the highest in the nation.
California is #9 in the MOST taxed states bracket. Most Taxed
California ranks as #20 Poorest
According to new data from the Department of Public Social Services, nearly twenty five percent of Los Angeles County ’s welfare and food stamp benefits goes directly to the children of illegal aliens, at a cost of $36 million a month — for a projected annual cost of $432 million. Study Shows 25 Percent Of L.A.’s Welfare Goes To Illegal Aliens:
“The total cost for illegal immigrants to County taxpayers far exceeds $1 billion a year – not including the millions of dollars for education,” said Antonovich. “With $220 million for public safety, $400 million for healthcare, and $432 million in welfare allocations, illegal immigration continues to have a devastating impact on Los Angeles County taxpayers.”

Welfare Limits Could Cost California $7 Billion in Aid
Welfare Reform – Congresswoman Diane Watson
Is California still the land of opportunity? Do you like this new idea? Will it help or make matters worse? Do you want to stay in California or is it time to leave?
O my God, this state is in so much trouble.
How about if you can’t efford them, don’t have them!
I think its just going to be just as horrible as the elder home care program, another entitlement that will cost us an arm and a leg and just to promote unionization. OH JOY! SEIU is going to get more union members, parents being paid to watch their kids instead of going to work doing something else.
If they are already recieving assistance, why should we be paying someone else to watch there kids anyway ?
A bit of social policy history seems in order here. CalWORKS is California’s program to implement the federally mandated welfare reform of 1997. CalWORKS replaced the much hated Aid to Families with Dependent Chidlren (AFDC) program. It requires job training or actual work of welfare recipients, and will pay for child care or most any other excuse a welfare mom may have to not particpate in job training (including approved education)or work. The theory being that while it may cost more on a monthly basis to provide this support to a welfare mom and her kids, in the long run it will lead to employment and leaving the welfare rolls and that’s the payoff for the taxpayers as well as the mom and her kids. The current LA County proposal seems to translate into rolling back to the old AFDC program where welfare moms were expected to stay home and care for their kids – with all the baggage that came with that, including incentivizing having more kids to stay on welfare, teens seeing pregnancy and AFDC as a way to escape from their own parents, being lazy and irresponsible, etc. Cheaper in the short run, but the likelihood of long term, multi-generational welfare dependency increases significantly. Pay now, pay later. Everyone, from taxpayers to welfare families, pretty much hated AFDC – the thought of going back to it is rather curious, in my opinon. Sort of like saying how much money we could save right away if we stopped childhood immunizations.
I am so sick of paying for other peoples’ kids. I CHOSE to not have any yet the single, unmarried folks such as myself are taxed to death. Enough is enough. Michelle, I agree. If you can’t afford kids, don’t have them. This really bothered me when I heard about it. Wake up, California!
I am sure this country is in a mess, with people in charge like this. Maybe we should pay me to clean my house, do my dishes, mow my grass and while they are at it…Pay me to go on a Vacation Cruise.

Jill,
I went to the Caloptima board earlier this month.
I reamed the board at the fact that they have a program called california kids program that give’s free health insurance to Mexican Nationalist(i state Mexican nationalist,s because that is the majortiy) that can’t get medical or healthy families. I stated to the board of which one of them is John Moorlach Supervisor, “why are American taxpayers paying for Illegal Alien health care, when we ourselves have a hard time affording it”, Of course the refused to anwser, they just cringed in their seats. And so did all the non-profit’s that were there!
I reamed them for about 5min’s, they looked like mice caught by the cat!
I am sending a letter to the DA office of orange county, because they are breaking state and federal law’s using medical money to fund programs for Illegal Alien’s.
People need to start standing up for their right’s and not be afraid to speak the truth!
Government like’s to grow and they will use who ever the can whether they are illegal or not! The govenment love’s those who will take entitlements!
Read my lips: STOP HAVING KIDS IF YOU CAN’T AFFORD THEM!
First off not everyone plans to have their kids. Second, no one is going to say hey lets have kids just so we can get a little assistance to pay for SOME of the kid’s costs. OBVIOUSLY you are not a mother or you’d understand some of it.
For the first year or so it is best for the mother to be at home with the baby, especially if she will be breast feeding which is the best choice to make. She shouldn’t just sit back though and not try to do anything for herself. At least take some school classes online or try to do some online work if she can. Also it’s single women who will be receiving help, not a couple.
People who abuse the system and have so many kids are really messing up things for everyone else.
Jill, I’d like to point something out, if I may. I know that yours was an older post, but it seems to me that people are not educated on the entire issue at hand. The average cost for raising a child (just one, not multiples) from birth to age 18 is $300,000. NO ONE can really afford that, unless they’re independently wealthy. So, unless you submit to that fact, it would be likely that YOUR parents couldn’t afford to have YOU.
I don’t agree with this policy, don’t get me wrong. I disagree with it very strongly. I think that it’s important for parents (whether single moms, dads, or couples) to stop outsourcing. What I mean is, ‘if I don’t have the time or know-how to raise my kids, I’ll take them to a good school and tell the teacher to raise my kids’. But likewise, you also can’t outsource to the government just to do your job as a parent. When with your own children, it’s not babysitting…it’s being a parent. If you’re not ready for that responsibility, then you’re not ready. But the government shouldn’t pay you to sit at home with your own children. That’s ridiculous.
I think it’s important though for people to understand that children are incredibly expensive. I myself have three toddlers, and I stay at home with them. I take classes at a local community college when time and money is spare, and my husband works full-time. I also clean houses when I can to try and make some extra cash, but I’m NEVER sitting at home on my butt doing nothing. And, NONE of my children were planned…they were all surprises. I would love to work outside the home, but we can’t afford daycare, so at the moment, I’m stuck where I am.
People are extremely critical of single parents, and the truth is, they do the best they can with what they’ve been given. So lay off, and chill out. If you haven’t been there, don’t assume that you know what’s best. This policy isn’t the answer, but neither is nagging about it. Be the change that you want to see, and ask yourself, “What would Jesus have me do?”
You know, people are people. They pay rent, they buy food, they buy clothing. Put a label on a demographic and it changes youre whole point of view. Mexicans were here first FYI. And honestly, this article is so half-stepped with focus on only one detail. Illegal Immigrants pay $13 billion in taxes every year, and $3.2 billion of those dollars are from where? CALIFORNIA. Thank you very much. People are so easily persuaded by anything they happen upon without doing any research themselves and filling in the gaps…They cost $1 billion in welfare buuuuut…..then again, U.S citizens use welfare, too. And just as they use welfare, we have U.S. citizens who work their butts off and the same goes for “illegal immigrants” who work their butts off as well and are very poised and classy and morally grounded, for those who picture them as savages who live in ghettos and have 10 kids with 10 different men/woman. yeesh. What would God have to say in this discussion…
