He's very reticent, and just doesn't seem to speak up when one would think he ought to have an opinion. The stance on the illegals was appropriate, but over the longer run he never had that much of an impact. If you deal with him one a one on one basis, he really comes across as rather a dummy. He mumbles and is unassertive, and doesn't have much of a record to exploit. He's a classic example of staying quiet and letting people think he's stupid, as if he opens his mouth, he'll remove any doubt. He's a perfect tool for people like Argyros as well as he'll do what he's told for the right support. He recently attempted to win over the Vietnamese-American community by issuing a City of Costa Mesa proclamation that the flag of Vietnam (the old Vietnam) is the official flag of the Vietnamese living abroad. 50-60 flag waving immigrants cheered him on. It's probably the worst case of political pandering I can remember in a long time. Of course, he has to do something... no one ever accused him of being the sharpest knife in the drawer. Hmmm, maybe that's why they chose him - an easily-manipulated dullard with a nice smile who can follow orders. And, does he walk away from his cushy job as an Orange County Deputy Sheriff (jailer) for the Assembly seat? Still hanging over his head is the whole Benito Acosta affair, wherein he violated Acosta's rights at a council meeting in early 2006.
