Apparently I am not the only one who thinks Assemblyman Van Tran is a corrupt and reprehensible politician.  Vietnamese American author Quang Pham, who also used to blog here at the Orange Juice, is considering running for the 47th Congressional District – and he may do so as an Independent if Tran does not drop out of the GOP primary, according to the Total Buzz blog.

Pham is everything that Tran is not.  He is a good guy and he is a moderate, while Tran is a Talibani-style Republican who hates Mexicans.

Here is what the Bolsavik blog had to say about Pham:

While Tran was being the good political soldier, working his way up the GOP ladder, Pham was in the military, flying combat aircrafts and writing about it. While Tran half-heartedly ran a solo law practice, biding his time for political glory, Pham ran his own pharmaceutical marketing company.

In the Viet community, Pham is celebrated as a particularly articulate bilingual speaker who proudly wears on his sleeve both his military service in the U.S. and his heritage as the son of a South Vietnamese military officer. Both elements figured prominently in Pham’s book A Sense of Duty: My Father, My American Journey. He has his own web site here.

The Little Saigon Insider blog offered this take on Tran versus Pham:

In his press conference with the Vietnamese community, Van reiterated 5 times “….As Vietnamese, we should take care of our own since nobody will…” It was no doubt his way of pleading to the community to forget and forgive his divisive tactics within the community in the last two years trying to bring down his political enemy – County Supervisor Janet Nguyen.

Sensing Tran’s vulnerability, Quang X. Pham, an author, a successful businessman and well respected in community, also announced his intention of challenging Loretta Sanchez. It is not a surprise move since Pham has expressed his interest in running for congress sooner or later.

I plan to vote for Congresswoman Sanchez, but will also support Pham if he runs.  I hope he does!  That will give folks a real choice given that Tran is the absolute worst option in the 47th congressional district.
