I always wondered after the 500 loss and turbines were banned. Saw the Chrysler car at Ford museum in 1991. Stand Firm.

Virgil.

With all the hoopla about ethanol a few years ago we researched the turbine engine that could run on virtually any type of liquid. We interviewed Parnelli Jones at his HQ in Torrance in that he drove one of the cars at Indy. You can watch that one hour, commercial and cost free interview on our web site.

The March 2009 show is entitled "The Fast and the Curious with Parnelli Jones."

I remember setting in a barbershop, somewhere around 1970, reading a Playboy arcticle about Andy Granatelli and Lear building steam powered cars. Lear's was piston driven while Granatelli's was a steam turbine. Granatelli claimed that within two years he would win the Indy 500 with one of his steam powered cars.
I also saw Lear's engine demonstrated on an Art Linkletter show about the same time. Then, mysteriously, I never anything more about either engine. Lear died and Granatelli suddenly became the head of STP corporation.
Do you have any insight on either of these engines?

Thanks for the informative article. In a related
story, check out the documentary film "Who Killed
The Electric Car?", all about the revolutionary
GM EV-1 and its bizarre ending.
Also, do you know if Edward Lear or another
inventor came up with a succesful steam turbine
car? I seem to recall an article from around
1963 or '64 in Popular Mechanics that referred to
a steam turbine van that would soon be available
to the public, and a substance called "Learium" that he supposedly put in the water to help it to
recondense more efficiently.
Thanks, John

email from a retired Chrysler executive

Larry...you never cease to amaze me! How much R&D over the years has gone down the tubes due to the lack of government support? It would be trillions of $. The Japanese aren't any smarter than we are when it comes to bringing new technology to market, but their govenment is a lot smarter because they support their industry's with R&D support...which does make them superior.

Keep up the good work.
