Unfortunately we have already squeezed these services to the bone and extra programs are paid for or pay their own way. The ability to fund these extras by already cash strapped families will be seriously compromised right at the time when we need a modernized infrastructure, solutions for increased public safety concerns, and a highly technically trained workforce to transition to the new oil replacing industries. Meanwhile, more people out of work, not paying income taxes, not paying property taxes, not buying and consuming at their expected rate all of which will mean less money for government spending and more demand for government services.

Hopefully this administration will change the screwy way we come up with these figures. Like unemployment is the number of people receiving that unemployment benefit pittance for six months. After your benefits are up you are no longer technically unemployed, regardless of whether you have a job or not. A good place to start would be to begin publishing again information that the Bush Administration began hiding, like the money supply, which might have raised the alarm earlier (that alone was an alarm for many internationally) and prevented the current crisis. And yet unemployment went down.
