Bankruptcy is not death. Death is death. Bankruptcy is the common stock holders getting zero, the creditors getting something, and the useful assets of the company being taken over by someone else.

A loan from the government does not make an insolvent company less insolvent. It just means the shareholders are behind even more debt.

There is something really absurd about three debt-ridden bureaucratic organizations that operate at a deficit going to another debt-ridden bureaucratic organization that operates at a bigger deficit, and asking for a loan.

Yeah, yeah, I'm with those conservative GOP congressmen, no bailouts, let “the magic of the market” do its work. Let global market forces weed out weak and obsolescent American manufacturing and reward strong and progressive Asian and European manufacturing. Then again, Congress might consider “investing” the people’s money in these American companies (no bailouts!), buying enough of the companies to be able to weed out obsolescent executives with their short-term self-serving interests, and replace them with managers committed to the long-term health and benefit of its newer stockholders, the American people.
