Of all the money donated to pass Prop 8 in California, an estimated $20 million of that came from Mormons (more than half of the estimated $35.8 million total).
What could they have done instead? Well, with $20 million, you can do all of the following at the same time:
* Protect 120,000 children from diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, polio, measles, childhood tuberculosis, hepatitis B, Haemophilus influenzae type b, and Vitamin A deficiency ($30 per child through UNICEF)
* Provide 175,000 bednets to protect against malaria ($10 per net through Nothing But Nets)
* Provide free cleft surgery for 1,000 children ($250 average cost per surgery through Smile Train)
* Provide 80 MILLION packs of birth control in third world or developing nations, enough to prevent unwanted pregnancy in over 615,000 women for a full decade (about 15 cents per cycle through dktinternational.org)
* Buy around 20 years worth of Copaxone therapy for 12 people with multiple sclerosis ($10,000 per year per person, assuming the drug company gives no discount and no generic is ever made).
You never get your money’s worth with Hate. When will Focus on the Family and the Mormon Church learn this?

What snotnosed gibberish!
Point 1:
You want to continue to allow corrupt governments to ignore their people, thus insuring future generations suffer. Why do they need your help? Are they not capable of doing it themselves? Why would you want to continue to make their welfare dependent upon largess from someone else?
Point 2:
Why do they need bednets? Because environmental radicals demonized harmless DDT. In fact, the reality that DDT saves lives is probably what accounts for part of the hostility to it by the left. (we do know they would like to see a much smaller world population, right?)

Point 3
You make SOMEONE ELSE responsible for an unwanted pregnancy that can be 100% preventable. No one else need interfere. Stay out of peoples lives.
Point 4
MS. Ok, thats a good one. Pony up your money. The arrogance of pointing to someones Political Speech and moralizing about their choices only works if you take action first. We on the right have learned that one from you leftists. The brand of hypocrisy is the great silencer.
Red.
The good news is that we can all support causes we believe in. Look at how much money Obama raised in his campaign. Should he have donatted 50% to eradicate AIDS. Just a thought.
I’d hate to see what the war in Iraq would buy!!!
Great post, Red!
Longboobs,
I am glad you enjoyed the post. You and I seem to appreciate many similar things.
Larry,Good point about the Obama campaign. Man, that guy’s goooooood! Raising record amounts of funds to help him completely demolish McCain’s run against him. Larry, I have to admit: Obama got not one, but two, donations from our family. This is a first for us. NEVER have we ever made political donations to a Democrat. And we did it in a tough financial environment. And as far as the money being better spent on AIDS – Well, I already did a post on that, remember? He’s removing all the preachy, ineffective, Abstinence-Only restrictions that were loaded onto the funds that Bush was willing to give. NOW we’ll be able to save lives by getting condoms out there along with REAL information not based in any religious belief that god decides who gets AIDS. It’s an awesome development that is designed to save a lot of lives. No mention of needing to spend more money – we’re going to get the job done by being smarter and eliminating unnecessary “qualifications”. When you get the right guy with the right ideas into leadership, you get the maximum value. Better results = cheaper operation costs.
As for the Mormons and Focus on the Family. Dobson’s FOF just slashed out 20% of their workers because the cash was used elsewhere to combat gay families. I love it. Keep it up, Dobson and you’ll have to run your giftshops by yourself.
I am hopeful that the Mormons and other religious businesses will finally be looked at as a tax revenue source. If they want to participate in a business type environment, they need to have their tax exempt status removed. Simple as that. They can help pitch in their fair share after a virtual free-ride over the last 8 years. There’s a whole group of them that don’t even PRETEND that they want their church as OUR state – they are actually trying to make that a reality.
Oh, and the California Court is willing to listen to 3 different lawsuits brought by anti- prop 8 groups. Excellent news for personal freedoms and statewide equality for ALL us taxpayers! I understand we should see some results by March of ’09.
Terry,
Thanks for reminding me to use a kleenex for my “snotty” problems. I am not sure why that’s important for discussions here, but I appreciate your attention to detail.
From your previous posts, I thought irrelevant details were part and parcel to posting comments… glad I could help!
