“For what doth it profit a man if he lendeth his campaign $55,000
– more than all other candidates combined –
loseth his race,
AND loseth his soul?“
Fountain Valley insurance heir and Catholic Pharisee Mark McCurdy had a vision: He would win a seat on the Fountain Valley City Council by focusing single-mindedly on attacking the one Democrat on Council, the popular long-term incumbent and Mile-Square Park hero Gus Ayer, who was busy night and day working to help get Debbie Cook elected to Congress.
He would use religion against Gus! Knowing Gus’ respect of the Constitution and diversity, he would use the “Let’s hang IN GOD WE TRUST in Council Chambers” wedge issue more nakedly than any OC politician this side of Rosie Avila. And he would mobilize his Catholic parish around the issue, paying for inappropriate blurbs in the Holy Spirit bulletin and painting Gus as a godless degenerate for making such statements as “I don’t feel City Council is the place to be discussing theology.”
And he would spend whatever it took; having inherited his dad’s insurance agency, he would eventually spend $15,000 more than all the other candidates combined. A spendthrift, he would spend more money on “fundraisers” than he would actually raise in funds, and sport a dozen McCurdy signs at each FV intersection. He would hire Rovian sleazeballs Gilliard, Blanning and Wysocki to send out shameless mailers accusing Gus of everything from militant atheism to plotting to force FV residents into pod-cars. And how could McCurdy lose, with ringing endorsements from fellow slimebags Scott Baugh and Dana Rohrabacher?
“Not all who cry out Lord, Lord, will enter the Kindgom of Heaven.”
Victory, if that’s what it was, was Pyrrhic. Gus Ayer, spending all his time on Debbie Cook’s campaign rather than his own re-election, was indeed defeated, but Fountain Valley voters had no interest in a prodigal, sanctimonious mudslinger, and instead wisely elected former Fire Marshall Steve Nagel.
It is said that McCurdy may give it another go in 2010, when fellow Holy Spirit parishioners (and IN GOD WE TRUST buffs) Guy Carozzo and John Collins will also be up for re-election, perhaps as a sort of Papist Slate. (Under the slogan: Fountain Valley – A Nice Place To Live, and to Re-Enact the Reformation in 2010.) But for the next two years Mark McCurdy has been condemned, for the use of his religion for political gain, along with other sordidness and tomfoolery, to wander the Lake of Fire blindly, rending his garments and gnashing his teeth:
To call Mark McCurdy an insurance heir is a bit of a stretch. He inherited his dad’s Mercury insurance agency, and he hasn’t run it into the ground yet, although it’s likely he’ll see a round of cancellations after his slimy tactics, as well as complaints to the Mercury corporate office.
He is indeed a blowhard and empty suit, who inflated his service on two Fountain Valley committees to Commissions, and has never spoken on any issue at a City Council meeting, except to mumble some support of his support of In God We Trust the second time it was brought up.
He also campaigned to “lower taxes” at a time when every municipal budget faces major shortfalls.
Finally, McCurdy had the naked hypocrisy to purchase space on a Democratic Slate Mailer, so his name would appear directly below Barack Obama’s and Debbie Cook’s. Is he a Republican, a Democrat, or just another typica dumbass Orange County Scott Baugh puppet like Joe Carchio.
Sure and he’s a good Irish Catholic spoiling for a fight. You have to do something when you go on the wagon – right Vern?
Is McCurdy another drunk like Mayor John Collins, who needs a couple stiff Long Island Iced Teas to get him home after a Council Meeting? I’ve heard Collins sometimes pours his third drink into a to-go cup to brace him on the way home.
Yo, dipstick…why don’t you fess up and admit to everyone that you first published that post identifying McCurdy as “Mike”? You’re really on your game, Nelson.
You also didn’t mention that your boy Ayer placed fourth out of four and that McCurdy beat him in the vote tally. This means a six-year incumbent placed last — and it wasn’t his time spent helping Cook lose by 12 POINTS — it was simply that Fountain Valley figured out he was a screaming liberal lunatic and people were tired of being represented by an out of work slob.
“Out of work slob?” You been to Gus’ home, Dipstick? YOUR 60-something parents could only dream of such a luxurious, and productive, retirement.
PTT – harsh! So everyone who is retired is an out of work slob? Thats cold! Do you have ulcers or cardiovascular disease? You must be in some pain to start with an insult and end with an insult. Are you McCurdy? Hmmm, maybe Scottish, definitely not Irish, I reverse my earlier post.
Well, what does he do for a living, Nelson??
And btw, I’ve seen his house and mine’s nicer…and paid for.
How do you even spend $55,000 on a City Council race in Fountain Valley?
There are about 15,000 voter households, and it would only cost about $5,000 to mail every one of them. Did McCurdy do seven pieces of mail? I know there were two flat-out hit pieces against Ayer, but what else did he spend his money on?
Looks like the consultants saw McCurdy coming and took him for every dime he had.
And who did he think was going to pay back the “loans” that he gave himself?
And don’t forget the hatchet job Jubal let some anonymous punk do on Ayer over at Red County…
Yes, we saw that. If you’re going to slam someone, why can’t you get his or her name correct? Your credibility is really diminished when your emotion and hatefulness gets ahead of your brain. Or can’t you even copy off one of his yard signs?
Can you get this question correct? How many incumbents lost their positions across the county? Wasn’t Ayer the only one?
Excellent points, “Wondering One.” FV residents were very wise not to entrust their finances to a clown like Matt McCurdy.
Disgusted, I didn’t see that. Do you have a link, or remember around how long ago it was?
Yeah, that was a good one. All true too.
Face it, only Debby Cook is a bigger loser than Ayer. And Nelson.
As a Fountain Valley resident, I have seen Councilmember Gus Ayer working diligently to help Fountain Valley to be an even “nicer” place to live. I know he worked hard to support all citizens here, whatever their political affiliation or personal interests. He worked on projects such as the Sports Park of Mile Square Park, and on helping to encourage drought-tolerant plants native to Orange County, as two examples.
My husband and I felt secure knowing he was looking after the city of Fountain Valley’s needs. And I know many others in the community have appreciated his hard work.
I was very disappointed to see that election mailers had gone out that lied about Councilmember Ayer; that said he didn’t want any free parking, or would force people to use podcars. Councilmember Ayer would not nor could not force these things on people; but at the same time, there is really no “free parking” anyway; it costs taxpayers already to own the land, pave it, keep it maintained and clean, and deal with the watershed problems that occur due to parked cars. The book “The high cost of Free Parking” would go into this issue. So whether by taxes, or parking meters, we pay to park.
Podcars are one future opportunity for our important transportation needs, and are used elsewhere as a new technology, but Councilmember Ayer I am sure, had no intentions of forcing this on anyone, just offering them the opportunity to consider it.
So lies like these hurt him being re-elected, but I respect Councilmember Ayer for the work he has done during his term.

GOD stuff in the third, never-sung verse of the SSB – wow, who woulda thunk it?
What’s the matter, couldn’t remember it well enough to quote it without looking it up? I sure can.
