Logan Barrio Reunion & Groundbreaking well attended

Today’s annual reunion at Logan Barrio was a great success – the event was well attended and it included a groundbreaking ceremony for a new development that features three affordable homes for families that will be selected via a lottery.

My mother in law grew up in Logan – if she were still with us she would have loved the reunion.  There were plenty of historic pictures and I met many of the folks whose families first settled in this neighborhood.

Local community activists Sam Romero and Joe Andrade were there.  I also ran into Lynette Verino, who is running for the Rancho Santiago Community College District’s Board of Trustees.  And I met Russell Barrios, who was the first Latino elected to the Orange Unified School District’s Board of Education.  This year his daughter Arianna is running for the OUSD School Board.  You can find out more about her campaign at this link.

State Senator Lou Correa and Assemblyman Jose Solorio were there for the groundbreaking ceremony. Correa really stirred up the crowd when he said that we need 3,000 more developments like this one.

Santa Ana Council Members Michele Martinez, Claudia Alvarez, and Vince Sarmiento were also there.  I also ran into Santa Ana City Council candidate’s Jim Walker and George Collins.  Walker is running in Ward 1 and Collins is running for Mayor.

Other notables at the event included our blogger, Thomas Gordon, and Phil Bacerra, who is active in the OCYD’s.  Former Santa Ana Council Woman Lisa Bist was there too.  She got a lot of credit for helping Sam Romero to put the housing deal together.  I also ran into Santa Ana City Commissioners Glen and Juile Stroud.

The houses will be built by students from Taller San Jose, a local non-profit organization.  I have offered to teach them the OSHA 10 hour construction safety course for free.  They are quite excited about that!  This class normally costs hundreds of dollars.

The reunion also featured a great potluck. The food was fantastic and there was a lot of it.  If you missed this year’s reunion be sure to go to next year’s event!  Thanks to everyone who put on this great event today.
