O/T (sorry)

LDS (Mormon) 'Yes on 8' Game Plan

I've posted a letter sent from Boyd K. Packer on July 28th to the California LDS stake presidents:

Apparently, there is a plan in place to put up one million 'Yes on 8' yard signs at 7:00 am on September 22nd.

Carl

you are right on point. I would suggest reading the PPIC and Field Polls done over the last two months on Prop 8. Its proponents sued and lost last week on the ballot title (they sued Jerry Brown) in our local Sac court and then went right across to Federal Court to appeal the local decision. They were told to pound sand on that appeal.

Their public pronouncements were to the effect that the voters of California would come out in astronomical numbers (they drew the parallel to prop 22 when it passed) to support Prop 8.

When you look at the proponents, most of them are out of state individuals associated with Liberty University (Jerry Falwell) and Pat Robertson as well as James Dobson (Focus on the Family).

Locally here, the Capital Resource Institute, led by Karen England, is a key player in the support effort of Prop 8. Schubert/Flint are involved in the campaign. When you strip away the verbage and play connect the dots, these individuals are what I would describe as the religious taliban of California.

People like Jeff Flint, Matt Cunningham, Craig Deluz (a capital staffer here who sits on a local school board and lost his race for central committee in June), Karen England, Meredith Turney, Jon Fleischman---If you look at the people who write (not anonymously) on RedCounty and the Flash Report, and dig into their backgrounds, it is not hard to discern their religious leanings and how they incorporate those sentiments into "Republican Values".

This is the premise which underpins a resurgent effort by centrist and moderate Republicans to take back the California Republican Party from these religious fanatics. If these Talibani Republicans continue in their fanatical efforts, the Republican party will continue its deep slide.

I would refer you to Bill Moyers Report on PBS. He recently did a piece entitled Capital Crimes which profiles Jack Abramhoff, Ralph Reed, and Grover Norquist and the religious right at the Federal level. You can see it in their archives section on line. It is a brilliant piece of investigative journalism.

The Flints, Englands, Cunninghams, Deluzs, Turneys, and Fleischmanns of California are the religious talibani of California. We must be always vigiliant of these folks and their associates.

If Prop 8 is defeated in November, it will be a HUGE victory for civil rights and a crushing defeat for the radical religious right. The more I hear how much the far right wants it to pass, the more convinced I am that the defeat of Prop 8 will be like sticking a knife in the religious right's political movement and twisting the hell out of it! Add an Obama Presidential victory and Democratic Congressional victories, and November could be the beginning of the end of the politics of hate.

Robin Tyler and her wife (the first same-sex couple married in California after Prop 22 was struck down) were the guests at the Americans United meeting earlier today, and I liked her idea for an anti-8 slogan: "Stop the Hate. No On 8!"

Vern
a great post---
what we must remember is that Jubal is a dogmatic Catholic in spite of his Servite education. Somebody says jump (most likely Urell) and these idiots say how high.

When I attended Servite (and yes Jubal, despite what you think and say, I am a graduate and I do get the ALUMNI directory-BTW you havent answered the question I posed to you-Again-what is alcarbon? besides an email address name?), the education was centered on the intellectual development of the individual so that he could in fact think for himself and make a positive contribution to his community and to society as a whole. What the Servite system did was to create a thoughtful individual (and yes there is a Servite High School in Detroit-not only in Anaheim) dedicated to making a contribution to this country.

The Servite system has produced its share of Jubals. Not everyone can adapt to the idea of thinking on their own and making decisions for themselves. Jubal is a prime example of the dogmatic Catholics that exist. Remember that many Catholics (not all Servite grads) are thinking Catholics and it drives the conservative element of the Church hierarchy nuts.

Jubal has to provide for his family and for that he is to be commended for exercising some degree of responsibility. But you have to keep in mind that people like Schubert/ Flint/ Cunningham are dealing with a shrinking base of support. Centrist Republicans (we are thinking Republicans) realize that these clowns are putting the party in a position where it will be a non player.

To get a better sense of what drives people like Flint and Cunningham, just watch the Bill Moyers Jounal piece entitled Capital Crimes. It highlights Abramhoff, Ralph Reed, and Grover the Raging Bull Norquist. I believe it was broadcast on August 1.

It clearly illustrates the depths that these types will go. The only difference between them and Flint/Cunningham is the stage-the philosophical mindset is the same.

I am sure that Jubal will do some work for Flint. You could protest outside his office in Orange. Just check his business website-Pacific-Strategies.com.

Dont give up the effort on defeating Prop 8. These characters have their heads in the sand and are in it for the money (watch the Moyers piece on Capital Crimes). Dont let up.

'<i>Ron Luce from Teen Mania ministries and other organizers talked about plans to organize 300,000 youth and their families for an October 1 simulcast, and using them to reach 2.4 million.</i>'

Ahh... the big tobacco strategy. Get 'em while they're young, eh? That's just sick. Joe Camel made cigarettes 'cool' and now Jeff Flint is attempting to do the same for hatred and discrimination.

Children should be brought up to keep their minds open and make their own decisions about these types of things, not be encouraged to hate others' whose business is none of theirs. 'Protect marriage... family values,' indeed.

'<i>Don’t tell me that Domestic Partnership is just as good as marriage. And don’t tell me that I was not married in my heart AND in my church to my husband. The Court just recognized what is a fact … he and I were married … and it is a civil right.</i>'

I still think we should strengthen civil unions and give the option to hets as well, but this upset me quite a bit; this gentleman was treated like he wasn't even human. For REAL equality, vote NO ON 8!

LOL Sweet I could care less I just love how the drama spins here.

The prop may or may not win....but history has been it wins....every time it is on the ballot. Bottom line people say they dont care about the marriages, but when they vote they vote against it.

Great post, Vern!

And, Flowerzzz, don't know why you'd be worried about any bubbles bursting. As long as the money didn't come from any anti-prop 8 efforts, or tax payers (which it did not), who cares? Bottom line is just a few people effectively generated a substantial reaction and were successful in bringing attention to this ignorant proposition. Sounds like a victory to me. Wonder what will happen when the forces are truly marshalled!
